Lookalikes add colour to campaign

Whenever there are elections, lookalikes of popular leaders hog the limelight. The Srirangam constituency, which goes to poll on February 13, is no exception either as the former Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandran’s clones on the streets of Srirangam constituency would tell you.

The AIADMK has taken the lead by bringing in lookalikes of its founder from different parts of the State.

Donning the iconic fur cap, dark sunglasses, and wrist watch of the late superstar, the lookalikes adopt various ingenious strategies to capture the attention of the voters. While some of them are artistes, most others are diehard fans of the yesteryear tinsel king.

The lookalikes with a rich make-up try to connect with the voters by waving and folding hands – just as their leader used to. Some of them deliver short speeches and sing popular songs from the films of MGR. Campaign managers also take them for door-to-door canvassing. “Though more than two decades have passed since his death, the image of MGR continues to remain strong among the people of the State. He unfailingly fetches us votes,” says a campaign manager of AIADMK in Srirangam.
