Senthil, Koundamani and some intelligence!

Indian filmy comedy scenes have historically been crass and loud, with glorious exceptions, however. Tamil comedians Senthil and Koundamani are legendary for the kicks, abuses and sheer loudness of the dialogs. But, they are thoroughly enjoyable within the cultural milieu - if you are not familiar with the setting, you'll fail to see any comedy in it.

However, there is one scene in a film where I remember Senthil delivering amazing logic! I don't remember the film, but here's the scene!

Vadivel (another famous Tamil comedian) has a sister up for marriage and both Senthil and Koundamani are hitting on Vadivel to wed the girl. Vadivel offers a swayamwar and promises that the girl, who is extraordinarily beautiful, will choose one of them during the swayamwar.

On the day of swayamwar, the girl comes out of the house towards Senthil and Koundamani and in true Tamil film tradition, we're shocked to find that the girl is terribly ugly. I cringe using the word ugly, but that's precisely the scene - if you watch more Tamil films, you'll also notice that they also make fun of dark skinned Tamilians...as if the state is extraordinarily fair. But this discussion is beyond the scope of this post.

The girl comes towards both our comedians and both start explaining how terrible they are in life and how she doesn't deserve them - in a last ditch effort to avoid marrying her. She comes close to Koundamani, but in a final movie, garlands a stunned Senthil.

Senthil looks woebegone while Koundamani starts laughing hysterically at the fate that has befallen Senthil. Suddenly Senthil starts laughing too, much to Koundamani's surprise...and audience's surprise too.

When Koundamani asks him why he's laughing, can you guess what Senthil would have said?

It defies the image we've of Senthil as a naive village bumpkin! He actually says, 'If this butt ugly girl herself has rejected you, who's going to marry you now?'

This may seem like a silly filmy joke, but I personally found it quite intelligent...far more intelligent than the usual Senthil stuff!
