I think it was suicide! He was hit by District line tube, as you know there is no Railway crossings for underground train. SO it has to be suicide

I read that he was stopped by the police, got out of his car and started running. Maybe alcohol was involved, no other explanation why he ended up on the train tracks. Unless like you said it was suicide. I watched him on TV a few times, very good player, would be definitely been in the England squad in a few years time.
