Thanks Eswe but this was not the image I was talking about although it was from the same film. MGR appeared very handsome with his usual signature smile complemented with the loose scarf around his neck. But that unbuttoned trousers made him a laughing stock. That is the still I was talking about.

I learnt from reliable sources in Kodambakkam that the film 'Panakkari' where MGR acts as a villain is no more in the film archives as it was deliberately destroyed so as to preserve MGR's image as the erstwhile hero. Can anyone in the know throw some light?

That is a myth sir, MGR acted as Villain in Rathnakumar but the print is still available. Panakari is preserved and watched by most of MGR fans 7 years back. There is no negative of the film available, like other movies to name one is Arasakattalai.

Panakari was re-released in 1982 period in my place when the same MGR was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and how that movie might have released when he had destroyed.

It was one late evening when dawn was quickly transforming into dusk somewhere in October 1970 in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital city. I worked late in office and decided to call it quits for the day and walked across the busy Chinese-dominated Bukit Bintang area for a quick cup of tea. Thereafter I crossed the road back at the traffic signal junction to get to the bus stop. Whilst crossing I saw a cream colored Rolls Royce car waiting at the traffic lights which I just glanced. Suddenly it dawned on me that the figure seated in the back seat of the car looked very familiar. I took a few backward steps out of curiosity to confirm my curiosity. Although it was already early night time that figure was shiny with its unique rosé apple face and the gold-colored pattu shirt. That was enough to brighten the night at that spot. I quickly tapped on the window screen which was opened by none other than MGR himself. Those days the windows have to be wound down manually. I was shocked, petrified and couldn't believe my eyes. I immediately stretched out my right hand and he stretched his and gave me a warm and friendly grip. I could feel his thick and muscular palm radiating a wonderful friendly energy into me. He spoke very briefly to me but I cannot exactly recall what were the words because I was on cloud nine at that electric moment. Without wasting anytime I asked him for his autograph and he asked me for my fountain pen which was displayed in my upper pocket. I quickly handed it to him and he again asked me for a paper. At that time I only had a receipt as acknowledgement to develop a roll of film in the photo studio. Without hesitating further I gave him that and after smiling at me for giving an 'inferior' piece of pink-coloured paper he reversed the receipt deftly with his left palm and with his right hand quickly scribbled the words 'Endrum Anbudan - Unggal M.G. Ramachandran' in Tamil. He did not sign it as 'MGR' but in his gull name. By this time the traffic lights changed to green and in the haste MGR accidentally dropped my pen onto his lap. Sensing that his car was about to move he quickly lifted up his sandal-colored pattu veshti to locate the pen. Alas, it was no where to be found. But he was magnanimous enough to blurt out 'mannichudunga' in his post-surgery gruff voice with his palms clasped as though seeking forgiveness.
Only when the Rolls Royce started to move did I realize that Manjula, Chandrakala and Latha were sharing the back seat with him. In the front was Nagesh, Ashokan and Tan Sri Krishnan. The latter is a prominent local film maker and was the official in attendance to MGR and his troupe when they visited Malaysia for the 'Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban' shoot.
While I was walking back to the bus stop in a delirium-like state after being mesmerized with the sudden and surprise meeting with the legend I saw a huge crowd further down the road. It seemed MGR was scheduled to attend a private dinner function in a fine dine restaurant in this part of the city hosted by Indian hair saloon owners. The crowd was too massive and MGR had to sneak in from the back entrance and only the lucky ones managed to catch a glimpse of him.
Later, when I showed to my friends and associates the signed autograph of the legend most, if not all, thought of it as a prank I am trying to play on them. Who will ever believe that I was one of the rare and lucky chaps to meet him in, of all the places, in a busy traffic lights junction when the nearly whole South Indian population was waiting for him at the national stadium the following day? Yes, the stadium was filled to the brim with full security given by the Malaysian police force.
Although I lost my sentimental fountain pen in MGR's veshti I deem it an honor. I feel that I was the chosen one because it was because of me MGR had to lift his veshti high up enough to expose his cream-colored legs unwittingly. The warm handshake, the friendly glean in his eyes and the pleasantries he spoke to me is still etched deep in my memory. When I went to take out the developed roll of my film I just showed the receipt to the Chinese shop owner. I told him why I cannot give him back the receipt and he understood my sentiments. Unfortunately this treasure of a priceless piece of paper was lost when my office was burgled about three decades later.
