    Hi akka,

It looks like the Tamil which I had been learning from Shanthi is kind of a mixed Tamil with words from colloquial Tamil mixed with words from Pure Tamil, Sanskrit and some slang etc.. I rememberr hearing from her and others that there is different ways of saying the same thing in Tamil. ie: For understand, there is theriyum. theriyagiRadhu, puriyum, puriyagiRadhu etc, etc, etc.. I would get sooo confused hearing these different words. Because, I do not know which words to use or what is the commonly used terms. Sorry if I sounded like I blew my fuse on you last post!

skanthan: To start with learn pure Tamil that is taught with a text book. If you learn both pure(formal) and colloquial Tamil at the same time you will be confused. When you become very proficient in conversational Tamil (pure) you can start learning colloquial Tamil.

Shakthi: Why don't we save colloquial Tamil for later?

"kaRukodutthu!" does not make sense, SN!

"enakku kaRRu kodungaL (or) enakku kaRRu thaarungaL, please?" would be polite!

seri. nanRi, stranger. If AJ and Raveen from old FH had seen this thread and my sincerity in learning Tamil, I think that they would not doubt me.

    Please
The word in Tamil for "please" is "thayavuseydhu"!

I remember when I first became interested in Tamil... It was seeing Tamil dances, hearing Tamil songs and music, hearing Tamil spoken, seeing Tamil scripts all on the TV that first sparked my interest in Tamil back in 1992. In later years, I saw these on Internet and in the Ganesh temple. That time, I already had full blown interest in Hindu culture and religion which since then, I adopted. By 1995, I had full interest in Tamil. In 1996, I got in contact with various Tamil speakers and they put me in contact with other Tamil speakers and over the next few years, I obtained various Tamil language materials ie: Tamil alphabet books, Tamil magazines, Tamil newspapers, books etc... Since then, Tamil language and culture has become a very important part of my life.

    thamizh vaazhga, vaaLarga thamizh!

    What does "pongu thamizh" mean?

    skanthan,
Just out of curiosity..what is your mother tongue? You dont need to answer if you dont wantto.I would totally understand.
I assume you are not a tamilian and to see a person who has not been involved with tamil from childhood get so involved with learning it is awesome.
