Balu Mahendra's style of commercial art films
http://www.thehindu.com/features/met...?homepage=true
Baradwaj Rangan's analysis in "The Hindu":
"The film’s slyest trick is that the drama is always present, thanks to the underlying sexual tension and Ilaiyaraaja’s score. After a small prologue (that details the heroine’s accident), the opening credits appear over an intense burst of violins — the same burst of violins that will be heard as a bookend towards the end, when the heroine and her parents enter the railway station and the devastated hero, far behind, is racing to meet her. So we’re already primed, subliminally, for this intensity of emotion — except that Mahendra takes his own sweet time getting to that point. As much as the themes in this complex film can be studied, the filmmaking, too, is worth putting under a microscope. Of how many commercial films today can you say this?"
Baradwaj is right on dot with his analysis. Even after 30 years, "Moonram Pirai" is still so refreshing and Maestro's music is 2014. I am sure that after many years, the movie and its music composition would resonate the same way. Hats off to Balu Mahendra for creating such great masterpieces!!!.

Ilaiyaraaja to score music for Drishyam remake?
There
has been no confirmation yet but there are reports that the composer
will score the music in the Tamil version of the Malayalam hit Drishyam. The original starred Mohanlal and Meena in the lead, and was a huge success at the Box Office.
The Tamil version will have Kamal Haasan playing the lead and Simran
is likely to play his wife. Now, we hear that music maestro
Ilaiayaraaja will be scoring the music for the film. This is just a news
that's floating around and there has been no official reports yet.

Being an IR and KH Fan, i hate to say this.
The way things are going in the last few years, Even if producers fix IR as MD, KH in all probability will replace IR with some other "commercial" music director. I am hugely disappointed with KH in this regard.

rooky, I am with you on that. KH talks big when it comes to his past work with IR but sells out and goes commercial all the time.

I Fail to understand how on earth would he (or anybody would) think that a DSP or ShMaha or a GIBRAN can do a better job than IR.
The issue with KH, RK and few other long timers (directors included) is.. they seem to think that they need to update and that means working with new generation technicians. They fail to understand that it applies to them too viceversa
. Learn from Balkis.. You need to be strong to stick to your preferences, come what may.You will succeed if the content is good.
