MGR is called a political phenomenon by analysts mainly due to his “unparalleled success.” After he captured power in June 1977, MGR remained Chief Minister, except for a brief period, till December 1987. While in power, he lived up to his “friend of the poor” image that he cultivated over the years as a film actor.

His administration offered several freebies to the poor, and the one that is still talked about is the noon-meal scheme, designed in 1982. About 10 years later, the Central government, acknowledging the scheme’s success, made it a national programme. In 2004, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre revised it. Now, the DMK regime in the State is providing three eggs a week to students covered under the scheme.

But what is significant about MGR is that he remained almost “undefeated” throughout his career, particularly after founding the AIADMK. The only major political setback he faced was the party’s defeat in the 1980 Lok Sabha elections. Then, he had teamed up with the Janata Party, which was on its decline.

More than anything else, it was his timing in launching the AIADMK that explains his success. He had the patience and foresight to wait for an opportune moment, unlike E.V.K. Sampath who broke away from the DMK as early as in 1961 and failed to make any impression on the people.

During 1953-1972, when MGR was a DMK member, many of his Tamil films conveyed political messages, naturally in favour of his party. But it was in the early 1970s that he decided to establish himself as a political force independent of the DMK.

When he started the AIADMK in 1972, Rajaji (1878-1972) and K. Kamaraj (1903-1975), who dominated Tamil Nadu politics for nearly 40 years, were in their twilight. Two months after the AIADMK was born, Rajaji died. In the 1973 May by-election to the Dindigul Lok Sabha constituency, Kamaraj’s Congress (Organisation) finished second to the AIADMK. The Congress-O was perceived to be the major political opponent of the DMK, but after the election the message was loud and clear. The AIADMK had arrived.

MGR knew fully well that for his party to be successful, he had to position it as the main rival of the DMK. He did not waver from this position, and his successor too follows him.

The 1977 Assembly elections turned out to be unique for more than one reason. They were the first elections to the State Assembly after the demise of Rajaji and Kamaraj. The AIADMK emerged one of the principal political forces in the State, a position which it still retains. Since then, regional parties have occupied the top two positions in the State.

After the DMK became a major party in the 1960s, for the first and perhaps the only time, the Congress and the Janata Party made a serious bid to capture power in 1977. (By the time the polls were held, Rajaji’s Swatantra and a section of the Congress (O) were part of the Janata Party, while another section of the Congress-O led by G.K. Moopanar merged with the Congress of Indira Gandhi.) The Congress and the Janata Party secured 17.5 and 16.7 per cent of the votes polled.

After the AIADMK’s upset victory in the 1980 Assembly elections, the party consolidated its position as the DMK’s principal rival and cut into the support base of the national parties. MGR consciously built an image of a nationalist, even as he projected himself as a follower of E.V. Ramasami and C.N. Annadurai, the leading figures of the Dravidian movement. After MGR revived his partnership with the Congress in the mid-1980s, the AIADMK remained the national party’s ally till his end.

MGR was a close friend of Paramasiva Mudaliar. Mudaliar re-released “Maruthanaattu Ilavarasi” and gave it a lot of publicity to coincide with MGR's assuming office as the Chief Minister of the State in 1977. MGR wanted to watch this film and when Mudaliar offered to send the print over, MGR refused and said though the theatre did not have air conditioning he still wanted to watch the movie there. The usual shows were suspended and the Chief Minister and his brother, along with their friends, watched a private show, reliving memories of their youth when MGR used to stay near Wall Tax Road and watch movies at Kinema Central.

Chennai, Dec 20 (UNI) AIADMK Founder M G Ramachandran was the best Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, according to an opinion poll here. About 44 per cent of respondents considered 'MGR' as the best Chief Minister of the state in a survey conducted by the School of Media Studies (SMS) of the Loyola College and the People Research Centre. The charismatic leader, who launched the popular nutritious meal scheme for poor students, ruled the state continuously for 11 years from 1977 to 1987. He died while being at the helm of affairs on December 26, 1987. Congress Chief Minister K Kamaraj, known for his simplicity and honesty, came second with the support of 31 per cent of respondents. Incumbent M Karunanidhi, who had assumed office for the record fifth time, was third in the list with 14.5 per cent of respondents choosing him as the best Chief Minister. Interestingly, AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa, who was considered as the heir-apparent of MGR, had the support of only 4.2 per cent of respondents. She has served as Chief Minister for two terms. Dravidian Stalwart and DMK Founder C N Annadurai was the last in the list with only 3.2 per cent of respondents voting for him. Releasing the survey findings to the media here, SMS Director S Rajanayagam said student-researchers surveyed 2,943 people in 29 districts except Nilgiris in two phases between November seven to 16 and from December 10 to 14.

எம்*ஜிஆ**ரின் மூன்றாவது தலைமுறை விஜய். அவருக்கும் பீல்டில் நிலைத்து நிற்க எம்*ஜிஆர் தேவைப்படுகிறார். எம்*ஜிஆர் படப் பெயர், எம்*ஜிஆர் நடித்த காட்சிகள், வசனங்கள்...

விஜய்யை வைத்து சந்திரலேகா என்ற படத்தை எடுத்த நம்பிராஜனை நினைவிருக்கிறதா? இவர் தீவிர எம்*ஜிஆர் பக்தர். வெறியர் என்று சொன்னால் ச*ரியாக இருக்கும். இவர் இயக்கிய சந்திரலேகா, நிலா இரண்டும் சூப்பர் பிளாப். இதனால் தனது பெயரை எம்*ஜிஆர் நம்பி என்று மாற்றி மீண்டும் சினிமாவுக்கு வந்திருக்கிறார்.

ம்... 100 கோடியில் படம் எடுப்பவருக்கும் பெய*ரில் எம்*ஜிஆர் தேவைப்படுகிறார். இதுதான் உண்மையான மாஸ்.

தமிழக முதல்_அமைச்சராக எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பதவி ஏற்றார்



14 பேர் கொண்ட மந்திரிசபை தமிழக முதல்_அமைச்சராக அ.தி.மு.க. தலைவர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். 1977 ஜுன் 30_ந்தேதி பதவி ஏற்றார். 1977 சட்டசபை தேர்தலில் மகத்தான வெற்றி பெற்று ஆட்சியை அ.தி.மு.க. பிடித்தது. அதைத்தொடர்ந்து, மந்திரிசபை அமைக்க எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு கவர்னர் பட்வாரி அழைப்பு விடுத்தார்.

இதைத்தொடர்ந்து, கவர்னரை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். சந்தித்து, அமைச்சர்களின் பட்டியலை கொடுத்தார். அமைச்சர்களின் பெயர்களும், இலாகா விவரமும் வருமாறு:_

1. எம்.ஜி.ஆர் _ முதல்_அமைச்சர்.

2. நாஞ்சில் மனோகரன் _ நிதி.

பதவி ஏற்பு விழா சென்னை ராஜாஜி மண்டபத்தில் நடந்தது. காலை 8_15 மணிக்கு எம்.ஜி.ஆரும், மற்ற அமைச்சர்களும் ராஜாஜி மண்டபத்துக்கு வந்தார்கள். கூடியிருந்தவர்கள் "எம்.ஜி.ஆர். வாழ்க" என்று குரல் எழுப்பினர். 9_15 மணிக்கு கவர்னர் பட்வாரி வந்தார். அவரை தமிழக அரசு தலைமைச் செயலாளர் வரவேற்று மேடைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றார்.

கவர்னர் வந்ததும், முதல்_அமைச்சர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மற்ற மந்திரிகள் உள்பட அனைவரும் எழுந்து நின்று வரவேற்றனர். கவர்னர் பட்வாரி, எம்.ஜி.ஆருடன் கை குலுக்கினார். அதைத்தொடர்ந்து கவர்னருக்கு, மற்ற அமைச்சர்களை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். அமைச்சர்களுடன் கவர்னர் கை குலுக்கினார். காலை 9_15 மணிக்கு பதவி ஏற்பு விழா தொடங்கியது.

கவர்னர் பட்வாரி, முதல்_அமைச்சர் எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு பதவி பிரமாணம் செய்து வைத்தார். பதவியேற்பு உறுதிமொழியையும், ரகசிய காப்பு உறுதி மொழியையும் கவர்னர் ஆங்கிலத்தில் படித்தார். அந்த வாசகங்களை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். தமிழில் கூறி, பதவி ஏற்றார். அதன் பிறகு பதவி ஏற்பு உறுதி மொழி, ரகசிய காப்பு உறுதிமொழி பத்திரங்களில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். கையெழுத்து போட்டார்.

பின்னர், அமைச்சர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவராகப் பதவி ஏற்றனர். பதவி ஏற்பு விழா முடிந்ததும், கவர்னர் பட்வாரி அமைச்சர்களுடன் "போட்டோ" படம் எடுத்துக் கொண்டார். அதன்பிறகு கவர்னர் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார். பதவி ஏற்பு விழாவுக்கு எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் மனைவி ஜானகி அம்மாள் வந்திருந்தார். மற்றும் அரசியல் தலைவர்கள், பிரமுகர்கள், கலை உலகத்தினரும் வந்திருந்தார்கள்.

ராஜாஜி மண்டபத்திலிருந்து திறந்த வேனில் அண்ணா சிலைக்கு எம்.ஜி.ஆர். சென்றார். அண்ணா சிலைக்கு மாலை அணிவித்தார். அங்கு பெருந்திரளான மக்கள் கூடியிருந்தார்கள். மேடை ஒன்று அமைக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தது. மேடையின் மீது நின்று எம்.ஜி.ஆர். கைகூப்பி வணங்கினார். அப்போது, கூடியிருந்தவர்கள் "புரட்சித் தலைவர் வாழ்க" என்று குரல் எழுப்பினர். அண்ணா சிலை அருகே அமைக்கப்பட்ட மேடையில் இருந்து எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பேசினார்.

அவர் கூறியதாவது:_

அன்புக்குரிய தாய்மார்களே, மரியாதைக்குரிய பெரியவர்களே, ரத்தத்தின் ரத்தமான அன்புக்குரிய உடன் பிறப்புக்களே! நமது இதய தெய்வமான பேரறிஞர் அண்ணா மீது ஆணையிட்டுக் கூறுகிறேன். அங்கே நடந்தது அரசாங்க விழா. அது தவிர்க்க முடியாதது. இங்கு உங்களின் கட்டளையை எதிர்பார்த்து "மக்கள் தீர்ப்பே மகேசன் தீர்ப்பு" என்று அண்ணா சொன்னது போல் உங்கள் முன்பு நாங்கள் அமைச்சர் பொறுப்பினை ஏற்றிருக்கிறோம்.

அமைச்சர்கள் சார்பாகவும், அண்ணா தி.மு.க. சார்பாகவும் தமிழ் மக்களுக்கும் பல நாடுகளில் பல மாநிலங்களில் வாழ்கின்ற தமிழ் மக்களுக்கும், நமது கொள்கையை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டுள்ள இந்திய துணைக் கண்டத்தில் உள்ள அத்தனை பேர்களுக்கும் நான் இங்கு ஒரு செய்தியை குறிப்பிட கடமைப்பட்டுள்ளேன்.

மக்களின் எண்ணத்தையும், விருப்பத்தையும் சட்டமாக்கவும், தேவையை நிறைவேற்றவும்தான் சட்டமன்றத்துக்கு தேர்ந்தெடுத்து அனுப்பப்படுகிறார்கள் என்பதை பேரறிஞர் அண்ணா உணர்த்தி இருக்கிறார். ஆகவே, லஞ்சமற்ற, ஊழலற்ற, நிர்வாக தலையீடு இல்லாத, நீதிமன்றத்தில் குறுக்கீடு இல்லாத "உழைப்பவர்களே உயர்ந்தவர்கள்" என்ற லட்சியங்களில் உயிரை கொடுத்தாலும், வசதியை இழந்தாகிலும், எதிர்ப்புகளை எதிர்த்து நின்று கடமைகளை நிறைவேற்றுவோம் என்பதை அண்ணா மீது ஆணையிட்டு கூறுகிறேன்.

எங்களது பணி தொடர உங்கள் நல்லாசியை வழங்குங்கள். அண்ணா வாழ்க! தமிழ் வாழ்க! தமிழ்நாடு வாழ்க!

இவ்வாறு எம்.ஜி.ஆர். கூறினார்.

பின்னர், அரசு தலைமைச் செயலகம் உள்ள கோட்டைக்கு எம்.ஜி.ஆர். காரில் சென்றார். 11_15 மணிக்கு, முதல்_அமைச்சருக்கான அறைக்குச் சென்றார். அங்கு தலைமைச் செயலாளர் கார்த்திகேயன் அவரை வரவேற்றார். அந்த அறையில் உள்ள காந்தி, அண்ணா படங்களை வணங்கிவிட்டு, தமது இருக்கையில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அமர்ந்தார்.

அ.தி.மு.க. எம்.எல்.ஏ.க்கள், பிரமுகர்கள், பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள் எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு மாலை அணிவித்து வணக்கம் தெரிவித்தார்கள். அதன் பின்னர் அரசு உயர் அதிகாரிகள் எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்து வைக்கப்பட்டார்கள். பிறகு, மற்ற அமைச்சர்களை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அவரவர் அறைக்கு அழைத்துச்சென்று உட்கார வைத்தார்.

அப்போது பல சித்திரவதைகளை அனுபவித்தார். சிறையில் இருந்து விடுதலையானபோது, அவரை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். வரவேற்றது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. 1977 தேர்தலின்போது, தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் சுற்றுப்பயணம் செய்து, அ.தி.மு.க. வேட்பாளர்களை தேர்வு செய்வதில் ஜேப்பியார் பெரும் பணி ஆற்றினார்.
