Counterpoint is a basic in Western? Since when? Can you please point to some Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber songs which actually have counterpoint? Michael Jackson? Whitney Houston? Celine Dion? Unless you have some very specific Beatles or ABBA tracks in mind, it is certainly not a widely used technique in Western pop/rock music and therefore not remotely 'basic'.
Can you please pass some of whatever it is you are smoking? Pffft, is there any comparison between a technique of writing harmony that is predominantly used in classical music and errmmmm the names of notes???? You keep helpfully inferring complete ignorance of Ilayaraja fans but for your kind information I have indeed listened to Pudhiya Paravai soundtrack many times. I like it (as well as the film). But it is not even nearly comparable in terms of complexity to say a Ninaivellam Nithya. Maybe internet creeps have no knowledge but your knowledge of English grammar could certainly do with some reinforcements.
PS: On the piano, Western keys start and end with C. Also there is no B sharp. :P

What, so it's ok to write dha, ni, sa, re, ga, ma, pa? Because that's essentially what you wrote. I doubt one so snobbish as you would take it lying down if somebody wrote Indian notation like that. You got called out, mate, fair and square. And whether you want to own up to it is not my concern. But writing it as ABCDEFG is a reliable way to let people know exactly how 'much' you know about it.

Ha ha , Dont read everything literally. See what context,it is written. Anycase, Crimson, Let me put it blunt . I have atleast 28 Songs in 5 years to name composition Marvel from Viswanathan -Ramamoorthy (Sonnathu neethana Etc) which are rich in form& content. Ilayaraja about 12 in 15 years, Rahman about 22 in 9 years.Let us not discuss about technology related developments . they are pure imaginative expressions. A.R.Rahman is a true trend setter. Ilayaraja followed his predecessors.
My ratings are based on continuous follow up on music trends since I was young. If at all I have soft corner ,it is for my contemporary ilayaraja. If I dont respect him,i wouldnt have visited this thread.

Don't try to justify it now as context. For even if you did, drawing a parallel between counterpoint and the names of notes is itself, ahem, unparalleled in the annals of internet discussions on music. And all the rest of your post is purely your subjective impression. There is no need for me to agree with you and I do not and further, just because you say so does not make you right. And any credentials you may have earlier laid claim to in the discussion, you have wiped out by displaying just how deep your appreciation actually is. It is said that empty vessels make the loudest noise. You indeed cannot be equated to other bloggers, no doubt.

And can you, once again, please enlighten us as to how use of counterpoint or complex chord progressions would be considered technology related developments? I beg of you to please let us know whether you have the slightest inkling of what you are talking about. If anything, Rahman was the technological trendsetter while almost all the advances Ilayaraja brought about were based on musical concept. It appears from the tone of your discourse however that these advances went right past your limited imagination.

Typical Attention -Deficit Syndrome .

Illayaraja and I : Music Director Sharreth
Translated from Malayalam by a friend of mine, Rajeev Ramachandran
------------------------------------------------------------------
Sharreth was recording some malayalam songs when he got a call from Ilayaraja's studio. At
first he could not believe and thought it was some prank call.Later he just called the same
number he understood it was raja who wanted him to sing a song for an upcoming
movie...Sharreth immediately left to saligram-Chennai to meet raja.
At the recording studio raja was sitting with his harmonium.harmonium at first had a casual talk
with him and then he started singing the pallavi of the song.He informed sharreth that the
raga is "Shuba Pantuvarali" which has a sad bhava, but wants sharreth to sing with a tinge of
arrogance in his voice.
As Sharreth was moving towards the recording studio to sing, the excitement of getting a call
from raja sir on one side and the apprehension whether he could satisfy the composer whom he admires/adores the most was on the other side.
As sharreth started singing, raja's fingers started moving in synch with the song and his face
brightened up! Sharreth who was tensed, now started smiling and as the song went well, raja also smiled along with him, leading to a very happy ending.Raja asked sharreth "Where was he all this while" and why is that he failed to understand his talent all this while"?
Sharreth could not control his emotion and tears came out of his eyes.He recalled the days
when he wanted to become a playback singer and had visited raja's recording studio umpteen
times and had to return back without even getting a chance to see him"except that his footwear had torn, nothing materialized...Though he did not mention all this to raja sir.
Raja held sharreth close to him and then took a snap!Requested sharreth to come next day.
Later next day, raja asked sharreth if he will take the gift that he offers him,but sharreth
politely replied with folded hands that "singing a song under him is the greatest gift that he
can ever get!",however raja gifted him with a "Navaratna Ring"--Golden ring!
Sharreth will be singing for Bala'next venture as well.So his aspirations of becoming a singer
had blossomed and that too under raja's composition.
