Now Shankar is making "Ai" which may be better than VR's technical standards... Kamal is making VR-2 as well.

Let us hope both these films are on par with each other and prove to be treat for fans.

If both of them join together will it be a loss or gain for the Industry?
Both are winners their own ways ... Shankar has a higher glamor quotient than UN and UN has a better screen play/story line etc. Most UN fans probably like VR better than endiran .. but Shankar may appeal to a slightly wider audience I would think. It'll provide more variety if they could come together once a while ..

If we take 'Indian' which is a UN/Shankar movie, the first half and the part with younger Kamal is mostly glamour with chart buster songs, Koundamani/Senthil comedy and so forth. The part with Kamal as 'Indian Thatha' stayed in people's minds a lot more. It had both glamour and good screen play together.

Thats probably what we can expect with Shankar and Kamal together.

Indhian is one of the many KH movies which I love to watch again and again. During its release, the impact made by the movie among all classes and masses was just amazing. I wonder if any section of the audience was dissatisfied with it - Some HCKH fans still disown it and don't consider it among Kamal's best as they feel it is more of a Shankar movie than Kamal's, but even these fans can't control themselves from cheering for Indian Thatha. I would rate it among ARR's best too. Not just the songs but the movie has some terrific BGM bits. Not to forget the other cast & technicians involved in making it so memorable - Goundamani, Manisha, Thotta Tharani, Sujatha, Jeeva, Nedumudi Venu

If the two come together again now, we have all chances of re-writing box office history again

I don tthink so...I am ARR fan and Kamal admirer... I don't rate Indian as ARR / Kamal / Shankar's best.................... screenplay was very good.. agreed, theme brilliant... BGM ok...songs......yeah fine.............. (Lovebirds malargale songs beats ah akkada ku use panniruppar) telephone mani pol and pachai kiligal songs thavira other songs gels nicely only with visuals.. enakkenamo younger kamal acting natural ah illama konjam forced ah iruntha maathiriye irunthathu...therila..may be my view or kamal might not be in agreement with those portions......and indian thatha make up............... in heyram the old man get up looked more natural, here mask ah ottitu nadicha maathiri than irunthathu (thatz the case anyway).......... Indian is a many time watch film of course but not in the league of best ............... of course this is my opinion

To me, Nayakan wins over Indian. Though it is not a commercial like Indian, it still attracts me everytime it gets aired. Mindblowing performance by Velu nayakkar and supporting characters. Songs and BGM score would suck you before you realize that magic. Watching the movie is like painting a canvas of Velu nayakkar from the start to end and you become part of his life.

Indian on the other hand is in and out an entertainer with all commercial elements. Its like "oru kaithiyin diary" for me. Kamal's comparison on these two films does not make sense.

Shankar is a 100% commercial director and his movies have an abundance of hit songs, great visuals, and comedy elements .. His movies definitely have a higher box office hit rate than most others - which is a producer's delight! And right, we cant compare of UN movies of various directors. As HH pointed out, Indian may not entertain some KH fans but it certainly had a very much wider appeal. Nayagan - agree its a notch higher with its lingering theme music but again not sure if everybody feels that way.

But KH fans themselves are very diversified as a community. Some like Thevar Magan more than Nayagan and I personally liked Mahanadhi the most for its wonderful portrayal uninterrupted of what a society can do to an ordinary someone who was trying to lead a simple but contended life. Not many would watch Mahanadhi more than once. But for me it was a realization of what the society can be made of. HeyRam, although a great movie, I felt there were portions that impeded the flow. Again, many UN fans may like it the most. Yet there're other UN fans who relish his regular commercial movies with dance, songs, fight etc. and dont care for his other genre movies.

I guess its a mixed bag.

'Indian Thatha' had a lot of appeal despite not looking so natural! Even among the hindi audience ... Younger Kamal, mostly glamour.
SPB's Maya-machindra song was dynamic and entertaining with UN morphing to a lion/lizard etc. Fully commercial
Pachai-Kiligal was superb .. no doubt.
Other songs atleast in top 10 ...

    Thank you Ravi Sir.

So nice of you to post the statistics here. I have few questions on this business. Please throw some light.

    1) Who owns the rights of these old movies & from whom do the theatre owners buy prints? Even for re-release do they have middlemen like distributors or is it just a deal between seller & theatre owners?

    2) How is the Price determined? Is it based on past performance of the re-release OR Box office result of its Initial release OR just the clout of the actor/producer?
