Scoring back-to-back music for Kamal Haasan’s films has put Mohammed Ghibran in the reckoning

This chubby and cute youngster is a man to watch out for this year. Mohammed Ghibran (meaning, one who spreads peace) is making his debut as a music director in Telugu. Spotted by Kamal Haasan, he left the actor so impressed with his work that after giving him Vishwaroopam II, he continued to offer him his next two films Uttama Villain and Drishyam (Tamil version). He made his debut in 2011 with Vaagai Sooda Vaa, then worked for Vatthi Kutchi, Kutti Puli, Naayandi. Naayandi did not do well at the box office but producers Vamsi, Pramod loved his music in the film starring Dhanush and offered him his first film in Telugu. Amara Kaviyam produced by Tamil actor Arya is also slated for release.

He talks of his childhood with mixed feelings, interestingly none in the family are connected to music, “I started composing very early, when I was in the VIII standard and was very clear about what I wanted to be in the future. My family was in a financial mess so we relocated from Coimbatore to Chennai. I was teaching music and doing lot of jobs connected with it. At one point we didn’t have a choice, everyone in the family were working, whatever I earned I would give it at home. My people trusted me, never questioned and I focussed on music; When I got my keyboard, they were happy.”

Ghibran composed music for ad films for around 12 years and in this span he worked for around 600 ads. He was under the impression that some day his work would be noticed by a filmmaker and he would get him a break but that was not to be. He realised very late that corporate and film lines hardly meet and one needs to do PR and socialise to be in circulation.
He talks of his debut and Kamal Haasan, “One ad film director Sargunam finally gave me his second film to work on and after that there was no stopping back. Now quite a few people are approaching me, after Vaagai Sooda Va I took a break and was looking for an urban based script. After signing up to work with Kamal sir, I realised that he’s a visionary and his writings are futuristic as well as contemporary. I studied music in Singapore and we could easily speak the language. He knows a lot of classical music composers, the ragas etc. One day he told me that I will be doing Uttama Villain and Drishyam. I assume he liked my work and consider it as a compliment and an honour.”

Vishwaroopam, he avers is a grandiose film and the music had to match its canvas, its action scenes and emotional journey. The duo recorded the musicians work from Europe and Singapore. Uttama Villain is diverse, there is comedy, there are 18th century portions for which they are mixing orchestral and traditional music.

The soft spoken Ghibran opens up about his personal life, “I follow Telugu films keenly and was waiting for someone to call me. I married a Telugu girl from Vijayawada, she is a scientist and we met in Singapore. When I was offered Run Raja Run she was more excited because Telugu is her language. Well, to your question whether I understand Telugu..yes.. but only one word..my wife keeps saying noru muyyi. On a serious note, I must say music is universal; scripts have an element of nativity but music works anywhere. People welcome new music but it is the producers and directors who are apprehensive. Apart from making sure people like the music, I have to be satisfied too… that is the toughest part.”
" The real triumph in life is not in never getting knocked down, but in getting back up everytime it happens".

Nothing against Gibran but was wondering why Shankar Mahadevan was not in VR-2. That trade mark transformation song by him ... was a big impact. Did they get into some issues ?

Shankar Ehsaan Loy were doing a tour at the time VR-2 shoot was announced plus I think they had composing commitments. Shankar Mahadevan tweeted to a fan that he regretted missing VR-2. Hindi lyricist was changed to Prasoon Joshi (instead of retaining Javed Akthar, a usual for SEL troupe) for part two probably due to the trio's last musical success "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" also written by Joshi.

We don't know if Suraj Jagan will sing the new version by Ghibran. As long as Sundara Narayana Rao isn't doing it, will be happy. Chella songs avanuku suit aagam, but that transformation intro song only Jagan can make it work for Part 2.

how much of the movie has been completed? is it delayed due to, what they call, "development hell" or any other worrisome reasons (read muslim org)? frustrating to see such juicy and racy script is put to rest for long time. i would prefer VR2 before UV

I believe VR-2 is ready to go but caught in a producer/Ai tangle for funding reasons. 'Ai' needs to release first before VR-2 sees the light of the day ...

Not that way. Aascar is supposedly caught in financial troubles(high budget for Ai) and hence that film needs to release so that blocked money starts to flow back. Why Sir gets caught in the cross hair of issues like this is another matter.

For now we'll have to be content with VR-2 news .. looking forward to seeing UN in romance.

There's a lot of romance in 'Viswaroopam 2' - Pooja Kumar

Pooja Kumar made her debut way back in 2000 in 'Kaadhal Rojave' and she was off the radar of Kollywood for more than a decade. She made a grand comeback as, Nirupama in 'Viswaroopam' last year and bagged a meaty role in Kamal's upcoming 'Uthama Villain' as well.

In a recent interaction with media, Pooja spilled the beans about her character in Viswaroopam 2. This is what she got to say about the magnum opus sequel - There’s a lot of drama, a lot of action, romance and special effects. It’s going to be a truly extravagant affair because it’s going to be very grand and people are going to be very very excited to see it. I'm so proud because I get to do all my underwater action sequences and sort of being there alongside the hero. I'm quite excited about it and I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised.

'Viswaroopam 2' is expected to release after 'Uthama Villain' & Ghibran is composing the music for this spy thriller. Aascar Ravichandran is bankrolling the project.

Uttama Villain to release before Vishwaroopam 2

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan-starrer Tamil comedy “Uttama Villain” was recently wrapped up and will release before spy-thriller “Vishwaroopam 2”, which is currently stuck in the post-production phase.

“There’s a lot of graphics work involved in ‘Vishwaroopam 2’, hence the delay. It will only release after ‘Uttama Villain’, which should be out very soon,” a source close to Kamal told IANS.

“Uttama Villain” is said to be the story of an ageing superstar, played by Kamal Haasan, who has also penned the story of the film.

The film also features Jayaram, Andrea Jeremiah, Pooja Kumar and Kamal’s mentor K. Balachander in important roles.

Kamal Haasan is currently busy shooting for Tamil thriller “Papanasam”, a remake of Malayalam blockbuster “Drishyam”.
