Two hundred and twenty women form the South Indian Cine Women Workers Union, and their primary job is to wash the dishes that are used to serve food to film crews at shooting spots

Behind the glitz and glamour of the Tamil film industry is also hidden its only ‘all-woman’ workers’ union.

Two hundred and twenty women form the South Indian Cine Women Workers Union, and their primary job is to wash the dishes that are used to serve food to film crews at shooting spots. Apart from their wages, they also receive any food that is left over.“

From M.G.R. to actor Suriya, these women have seen everyone. M.G.R. used to walk into the room and enquire about us. He used to check if the food provided to everyone was of good quality,” reminiscences K. Kanthammal, who formed the union.

Now these women extend their services for television shootings, as well.

A large number of them have been separated from their husbands or are widowed.

“This job, which now pays Rs. 400 for a call sheet which stretches between 8-12 hours, has helped many of us in building our lives back,” says Sripriya, a committee member of the union. V. Sarasu, the secretary of the union, for instance, was able to educate her children with her earnings.

“After washing over 200 plates a day, most of the women take the remaining food home and feed their children. They save the money that would otherwise be spent on grocery and educate their children,” says Kanthammal.

She formed the union three decades ago after she and four others who used to clean utensils were prevented from entering a famous studio in the city. “Those days we got only food and no remuneration. I have washed dishes at Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu film shooting spots,” she says.

The women of the union are still so closely knit that two decades ago, they themselves cremated a member who was neglected by her family.

“Many are reluctant to leave this job despite their age. They feel secure and know we are there for them. We pay Rs. 10,000 to the family if any of our members die,” says Kanthammal.

புரட்சித்தலைவர் நிறுவிய "அனைத்திந்திய அண்ணா திராவிட முன்னேற்றக் கழகத்தின்" 43 வது துவக்க நாளினையொட்டி, பதிவிட்ட என் பதிவினை இத்திரியின் மூலம் பாராட்டிய, அன்பு சகோதரர்கள் திருவாளர்கள் வினோத், ரவிச்சந்திரன், ராமமூர்த்தி, கலைவேந்தன் மற்றும் ரவி கிரண் சூரியா ஆகியோருக்கும், அலைபேசியில் அழைத்து பாராட்டிய திரு. லோகநாதன், திரு. சி. எஸ். குமார் உள்ளிட்ட பல மக்கள் திலகத்தின் அன்பர்களுக்கும் எனது மனமார்ந்த நன்றி !

திரு செல்வகுமார் அவர்களுக்கு

தங்களுடைய கட்டுரை படிக்க நேர்ந்தது.

சில விஷயங்களை தெரிந்துகொள்ள முடிந்தது. நன்றி.

அதில் இடம்பெறவேண்டிய இன்னும் சில விஷயங்கள் ..முக்கியமாக மையத்தில் புதிதாக படிக்க வரும் நண்பர்களுக்கு தெரியவேண்டியது என்று நான் நினைப்பது..!

அன்று ADMK சேர்ந்தவர்கள் ஒரு பகுதியினர் "MGR அவர்களது உண்மை விசுவாசி" அல்லது "MGR அவர்களது முரட்டு பக்தன்" என்று யாரும் அவருடைய ஆட்சிகாலத்தில் STICKER ஒட்டி கொள்ளவில்லை.

அவரது SECOND lieutenant ஆக திரு ராம வீரப்பன் அவர்களும் இருந்திருக்கிறார். அவரை மிக மிக பிடித்தவர்கள் கூட "RMV யின் உண்மை விசுவாசி" என்று STICKER ஒட்டி கொள்ளவில்லை. THEY DID NOT DO SUCH THINGS FOR THE SAKE OF IMPRESSING KEY PEOPLE FOR DERIVING TANGIBLE OR NON-TANGIBLE BENEFITS !

STICKER என்ற ஒரு உபகரணம் அந்த காலத்திலும் இருந்தது !!

இதை கூறுவதற்கு காரணம், சுவர் இருந்ததால் தான் இன்று சித்திரம் தீட்ட முடிகிறது !!!

யாரால் புகழோ,
யாரால் வெற்றியோ,
யாரால் வாழ்கையோ அவர்களை மறந்து

ஆனால் பேசும்போது அவர்களை மறக்கவில்லை என்பது போல பேசி, நிறைய பேர் தங்களுடைய வாழ்கையை வளப்படுத்திகொண்டிருக்கிரார்கள்.

ஒரு அரசாங்கத்தில் இன்று யார் நிதியமைச்சர். யார் தொழில்துறை, யார் மருத்துவம், யார் கல்வி என்று 98% மக்களுக்கு தெரியவில்லை. இதுதான் மக்கள் ஆட்சியா ? இதுதான் "மக்கள் தீர்ப்பே மகேசன் தீர்ப்பு" என்ற மாண்பில் நடக்கும் முறையா ?

ஆனால் 1977 முதல் 1987 வரையிலான காலகட்டங்களில் இருந்த, இன்று இருப்பவர்களை கேட்டால் அவர்கள் கடகடவென ஒப்பிப்பார்கள் யார் யார் என்ன அமைச்சராக இருந்தார்கள் என்று !

MGR ADMINISTRATION & BEHAVIOR NO DOUBT WAS STRICT BUT
1) HE NEVER TREATED HIS MINISTERS LIKE A SLAVE ...!
2) HE NEVER TOOK DECISION DEPENDING ON HIS MOOD...!
3) HE NEVER ALLOWED MISCREANTS TO INTERFERE & INTERVENE HIS OPERATIONS ..!!

THIS IS MY BELIEF AS PER MY UNDERSTANDING AS I WAS IN MY EARLY TEEN AT THAT TIME ..!

மேலும் சத்துணவு திட்டம், சத்துணவு திட்டம் என்ற பெயரிலேயே இருந்தது. "பொன்மனச்செம்மல்" சத்துணவு திட்டம் என்று இருந்ததில்லை.

WHEN THERE IS A SCOPE TO LEARN SOMETHING FROM SOMEONE, WE HAVE TO LEARN IT IMMEDIATELY BEFORE WE THINK TOO BIG ABOUT OUR-SELF..!

1. Our beloved God M.G.R. always gave importance to the Public Welfare, especially for the poorer section of the people and the down-trodden.

2. In fact he never mistook on the matters concerning with -

a) AIADMK Officials attending the marriages against the Invitations extended
by the other Party-men including the Opposition Party people,

b) AIADMK people maintaining the relationship with DMK and Other Party-men

3. Our great M.G.R. never encouraged his own Party-men to support blindly and thus prove themselves as ஜால்ரா

4. Our beloved M.G.R. discouraged the AIADMK people who failed to remember Perarignar Anna and made them to realize the pride of his Leader beloved ANNA,

5. Our God M.G.R. never allowed the Party-men to worship him and bending towards his feet

Like-wise, many incidents, we can quote.
