But its not that SS cannot perform in roles other than 'larger than life' types .. Also when we say older directors, we have KSR, Shanker, Vasu mainly. He has tried KSR recently with mixed results. Shankar will take much longer time like a year. Vasu - not sure where that'll lead to .. So there's nothing wrong in trying out Ranjith .. I havent seen any of his movies but I have confidence in Rajini to do a role with scope for acting .. He has done several of them before he donned SS type roles. Of course if this materializes, it may be a combo of both types of roles.

Exactly, in fact I would prefer this than larger than life roles, like another "mullum malarum", "Aaril irunthu 60 vathu varai", "Engeyo ketta kural", "nettrikan" kind of roles ... but I know that will never happen

Agree with your thoughts, also gives a chance to breakaway and experiment a bit...Also it is official the movie with ranjith.

we do not have to go too far to quote thalivar's acting talent... For me, Lingarajeshwaran was very convincing. when comes to emotional scene, thalivar is one of the best in TFI (For ex: the whole episode of lingeshwaran leaving the dam and welcoming Vijayakumar & Co for dinner).

He does not even have to do that big and serious roles - even giving importance to an interesting non-Rajini like script - maybe get someone like K Bhagyaraj to come out of retirement to give a cool script - that will give scope to push his boundaries - would be a refreshing change…
PS: forget something like 'Mullum malarum' - to make a film of such stratospheric quality, a Mahendran is needed - there never was another director like Mahendran - unless he himself decides to direct Rajini again, its not gonna happen
