Kamal's roles in all the K.B movies had ranges, he was adorable in 3 knots, if not why would I cry and hate that goddam fag flipper didn't save Kamal when he was drowning (I was three or four years old), in AR he was hot headed youth in love with older woman and plays miruthanggam they way it should be played, well-written role that he perfected in the Hindi version, and you should check out his hilarious cameo in Tappu Thalanggal (where I learned recently that he was testing out the teeth for Kalyanaraman).

In NI, the fault likes entirely on Jayapradha's characterisation. It could have been just an on-off love affair, instead of all that stupid backstory.
Grouch, in Moondru Mudichu, what Kamal did was an extended cameo. It was a Rajini-Sridevi show all the way. KB was probably fascinated by his new finding that he made a movie just to showcase Rajini's mannerisms and villainy. Though Kamal was not a star, KB could have gone for a lesser actor to play that role. I still remember asking my brother innocently "Andha scene'kkapparam Kamal varave maattaara?"

AR was slightly better. But again in a movie based on family & complex relationships, he had to share screenspace with the supporting characters. Baring few angry outbursts, onnum perusa illa. Avargal on the other hand was a movie which largely benefited by Kamal's acting. But here too KB did not want to give anything ordinary to Rajini. Did he?

NI - mannikkave mudiyaadha kutram. A director who went out the way to write such an entertaining comedy track could have done something better to make KH & Jayapradha's characters interesting. Nagesh in MT/NT movies? Maybe, but do you think Kamal's character in NI was half as good as MT's or NT's? A Gemini Ganesan-Nagesh or Karthik-Goundernu sollalaam. Balancing ange dhaan konjam odhaikkudhu.

Thappu Thalangal naan innum paakkala. But unfortunately, I didn't find even the last-scene cameo in Thillu Mullu interesting, when compared to the rest of the movie. If you compare these movies with Nizhal Nijamaagiradhu, which was released almost during the same time, you would see the difference.

Agreed, it was a mokkai! In fact IMO this was the mokkai scene in the film

Kamal's charecter in NN was originally done by Rajini in Chilakamma Cheppindi in telugu directed by Eranki Sharma who was assistant director to KB. Even i heard that Chilakamma Cheppindi was a remake from malayalam.

Kamal's performance in TT was very good though it was a small one. KB was mainly making female centric movies where bad men were mostly a sadist, womainser or chauvanist etc. Rajinikanth's unique style of acting perfectly suited those charecters which was considered to be fresh at the time. However, KB also offered variety of roles to kamal in several movies, to name a few, ventriloquist in Avargal, mimicry artist in aval oru thodarkathai, unemployed youth in VNS etc.

OK, a simplified version of mAmA miA, by indhi MD RDB in 1977 :

vAnilE / sayanOrA is ditto of mil gayA. Keyboarders may be able to map the notes, I can only go by ear

(It was clever for RDB to lift his first line from somewhere in the middle of the ABBA song - the "Look at me now / I don't know now" part - and MSV followed suit Still, RDB pal iLichchifies with 'terE liyE' that's ditto of mamA miA while MSV couldn't resist keeping a feeble keyboard accompaniment that retains the feel of the ABBA song. What's more, the guitar prelude plays the same tune and thus the copied notes form almost 25% of this tiny song; With sayanOra, it has two versions too!).

Obviously, one should not look for "Veda / S-G / Deva"-like wholesale lifts in the case of MSV-IR-ARR. Karthik's itwofs website samples should showcase this difference in levels, though there's an element of plagiarism!

For e.g., look at these by IR and how they are classified:

If all you guys disagree with me (that MSV's 'sayanOrA' & RDB's 'mil gayA' are the same melody), I'll book an appointment with an ENT specialist

That way, with a copied song, to call it our best would be an insult to all the masters of TFM, IMSO!
I still don't see how MSV's "vaanilE mEdai..." could be called a "copy" of ABBA's "mamma mia...". Why are we dragging R.D. Burman's "mil gayaa..." into this discussion now?
