so it very much looks like who the MD is, is very much the producer's call who can override the actor/director's demand/suggestion!

Bapu and K.Vishwanath always had a succesfull collaboration with KVM only. Infact, it was a surprise how Bapu got Ilaiyaraaja for that film. And I dont know what made K.Vishwanath opt for Ilaiyaraaja for Saagara Sangamam when all his films succeeded musically with KVM.
In most cases, the choice of MD was/is typically producer's choice only. even in 50s/60s, the music director used to be a full-time employee for a studio. any film produced by that studio will have music by that composer only. And i think in 80s and even in 90s, its only producers who had the final say. even for Ramgopal Varma, the producers brought in Ilaiyaraaja, although he wanted Keeravani for his 1st film in 1989.
even today, in many cases, its producers who mandate things. with corporatisation in Hindi industry, it is usually a team of producers/financiers who decide the technical crew, depending upon how they want to pitch the film in the market. in those directors with a fan following, decide who they want. Its almost the same in Telugu industry also, atleast for big films. I dont know how it is in tamil now.
