If Manidhanum Deivamaagalaam was between theism vs atheism, Selvam is about superstitions and how they can wreck lives.
Selvam (Sivaji) returns home from overseas after completing his education to a waiting Valli (KR Vijaya). ennadi iththanai vEgam idhu edhunaal vandha mOgam (PS & TMS) is begun by Valli and ended by Selvam.
Their marriage is finalised and Selvam's mother seeks the astrologist who says that Valli will become a widow if she marries Selvam!

Selvam's mother coaxes Valli to reject Selvam which she reluctantly does. Sivaji is unable to accept this! avalaa sonnaal? irukkaadhu! irukkavum koodaadhu! namba mudiyavillai illai illai....
Things happen fast when at a temple function for Valli-Murugan Thirumanam, Selvam takes the thaali and ties it around his lover Valli's neck! Without much choice Selvam's mother accepts the marriage and now announces a new condition - parigaaram! Selvam and Valli must not have physical relations for a year or the prophecy will come true!
Valli goes to stay with her family and we are introduced to a new character - Selvam's cousin - with lilly, lallie, jimmy, jikki, rosie. She is a carefree child like character but whose lifelife is strong and thus is selected as the 2nd wife for Selvam! The family tries to bring Selvam and his cousin closer but to no avail.
In the meantime, Selvam's needs grow and he goes over to Valli's house. ondraa irandaa eduththu solla ulla unarchiyai vaarththaiyil vadiththu solla... Valli finishes it reminding him of his saththiyamE.
His apetite unsatiated, he returns home but not for long. Doctor Ranga Rao announces that Selvam needs entertainment and whicle watching an English couple dancing, our hero's mOham grows and this time he takes the car and drives in fury. From the car radio comes the song... enakkaagavaa naan unakaagavaa setting the stage for the final culmination!
Selvam and Valli are now feeling guilty but the secret lies within them. The days go by and finally the last week arrives. Valli vomits and the doctor is summoned. Selvam shivers in anticipation. But Ranga Rao pretends that Valli is just having mild problems.
A stage show is held to keep Selvam's mind occupied. Educated though he is, he is now a complete believer in superstitions and imagines that he is going to die soon, especially since he had had intimate relations with Valli. The stage show vidhi vasam endraalum of course adds on to Selvam's fears!
Selvam now sees Ematharma rajaa!!! And so does his mother!
It turns out to be Rangarao who is on the way from a drama.

The film takes on a comic-serious tone from then on.

Rangarao is one helluva comedian and the part where he is dumped from the bed by the three women had me literally
Valli is counting the hours... when suddenly a snake is spotted in the room! Is Selvam destined to die? Do supersitions make sense? Or is there human interference? See the film for the answers!
