Vijay’s comic timing is fantastic: Murugadoss (Times of India)

Thuppakki sees the teaming up of director A R Murugadoss with Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal for the first time. In a candid chat, he reveals how Vijay exceeded his expectations, Kajal and more...

How is Thuppakki different from your previous films?
I was very clear from the beginning that this would be a commercial movie. I wanted it to be like Superstar Rajinikanth's hit films that came out in the 80s and 90s - that was the feeling I wanted to give the audience. It should be fun, interesting and captivate the audience. This is an out-and-entertainment flick. You can watch this movie with friends, family and your kids. I wanted the audience to be able to watch the movie again and again and never get bored. And I think that's what I have made.

This is your first movie with Vijay. How was the experience?
I discovered that Vijay is an extremely talented actor. I knew he was a good dancer and fighter. But I always thought his acting talent was limited though he was a big superstar. But in two days, he proved me wrong completely. I try to get the actor to use their body language to deliver the dialogues. I only interfere if the actor doesn't deliver to my expectation. But Vijay delivered exactly what I had in mind and that was very surprising for me. Secondly, his comic timing was fantastic. I never expected that. And he continued to surprise me till the end of the movie.

Did you write the character with Vijay in mind?
If I had done that then the movie would not be special. I did use his strengths like his dancing and singing. His body language, modulation and dialogue delivery in this flick will be different.

And you got him to sing...
I wanted to Vijay to sing and coincidentally even Harris Jayaraj had the same thought. After Kamal sir, Vijay is the only hero singing for his own films. We recorded the song in just 3 hours. Google Google will be liked by the youth of today; it's colourful and fun.

How did you decide on Kajal?
The first thing was that I needed a heroine to give me bulk dates. I also needed a heroine who knew Tamil as there are a lot of dialogues. I was worried when I cast Kajal as she didn't know Tamil but she worked very hard and she has done well in the film. Today, I can't imagine anyone else in that role but her.

What was the most difficult scene to shoot in the film?
In Mumbai, we shot in real locations. It was thrilling but difficult also. We had to shoot in the middle of the sea and physically it was taxing for all of us. It was difficult then but when I think of it now, I am quite happy the way the scenes have turned out.

Playing an army officer made him want to do his bit for those who man our borders - Deccan Chronicle

Ilayathalapathy's role in the upcoming Diwali release Thuppakki has inspired him to visit the soldiers who man our borders
With back-to-back hits like Velayu...dham and Nanban, Ilayathalapathy Vijay, who is on a winning streak, is expected to hit a hat-trick of sorts with his highly anticipated film, Thuppakki, releasing this Diwali. While Vijay essays the role of a military officer, Jagdish, in Thuppakki, the actor who is known for his splashy premieres, wishes to meet the army jawans posted at the border. “I would be very happy if I get an opportunity to entertain and spend a day with the jawans at the remote borders and experience army life,“ says the actor in an exclusive chat with DC.

“Though the army portions appear in a small segment, they are crucial in the film. It's fine to ruminate on the lives of army officers sitting on your sofa at home.
But when I donned the uniform, it gave me a `high' I have never experienced before,“ Vijay recounted. To prepare for the role Vijay watched a few army videos and some Hollywood films, mainly to observe the dress code and body language employed. The A.R.Murugadoss--Santhosh Sivan combination was hard to match, he says -a dream come true, as he puts it. Usually, he has producers approaching him and asking if he would hear out a script to be helmed by a debutant director with a role they think he could replicate suitably. “Or they suggest going for a remake of a hit film,“ says Vijay.“Similarly, my dad came and asked me one day while I was shooting for Nanban, `Are you ok with Murugadoss? He is ready with a new script.' And Santhosh Sir's name surfaced for cinematography.Everything fell into place in four days' time, and we got started on Thuppakki.“ The USP of the film, he says, is its climax that has a touching message told in a poetic manner by ARM. Kajal, his co-star, was impressive.
“The comfort levels with her were very good. Also, her character is such that any youth who watches the movie would feel, `I wish I had a girl friend like her',“ says Vijay .

The album, featuring Harris Jayaraj's music for the film, is already a hit. Vijay is singing in the film after a six-year gap and his rendition of the Google song is topping the charts.
Even as the buzz around Thuppakki builds up -and one hopes it lives up to all the hype--Vijay has been featured in a jewellery ad along with his mother Shoba. “The mother-son bonding idea was suggested by the agency people,“ Vijay points out, and it seems to be garnering him even more attention.
There's a shot where Vijay has to lie on her lap and tell her something softly.“After the shoot got over, my mother became so emotional. She profusely thanked the ad guys for their gesture, saying, `My son was lying on my lap after so many years'.“
