This morning Hindu carried a great information from Mr.Aloysius Vincent, veteran Photographer...He states that THE FIRST ZOOM SHOT IN INDIAN CINEMA WAS SHOT WITHOUT ZOOM LENS (Interesting isnt it?) for Our Nadigar Thilagam Classic Blockbuster "UTHAMA PUTHIRAN" as early as 1958.

Having bought few of NT’s movies, I spent the week end watching them(as they announce in suntv; ‘intha vaaram Nadigar Thilagam vaaram!! But for me, every week is NT movie week, anyway!). All are NT’s late 70’s/early 80’s movies, mostly good ones. I read the write-up about ‘Rojavin Raja’ in the hub, and finally able to watch it. I was disappointed as NT was wasted in it. Apart from being a bad dvd, the movie itself lost its continuity. Anyway, ‘Theepam’ and ‘Kavarimaan’ are very good. Even though watched previously, I enjoyed it; especially ‘Theepam’ in which NT underplayed marvellously. Even some of the scenes which I expected his usual blast, his subdued acting made that character extremely sympathetic and much liked.
I watched ‘Vaira Nenjam’ for the first time. The movie’s success got affected by a political issue of some sort? (what else could that be!) Overall it’s a good movie. Even though it has lost the touch of Sridhar’s earlier movies, it shows the smart, slim and handsome NT again! (see him jumping into the jeep with ease and crossing the road). Having appeared on screen after nearly 20 minutes of start of the movie, NT then leading us through his stylish performance. (I like NT wears suit, by the way. When he does, the majestic walk comes natural to him). Like in ‘Sivantha mann’, here is also a stylishly aligned fight scene. The fighting in the old building where NT goes with Sakunthala, is very well coordinated for the 70’s standard, I think. NT moves the suitcase with his feet while fighting off the enemies. In terms of NT’s pair, Padmapriya looks so young and immature and seems obvious that she is struggling to act, poor thing. Even though heroine has no importance to this story, it’s a pity that the girl didn’t know how to react to even simple scenes like; quarrelling or sulking not to mention duets, which is a must for an Indian actress! But as usual, with NT’s charming moves in love scenes give us pleasure to watch. The director didn’t waste time adding scenes unnecessary to the main character, who is an intelligence officer, and sticks with the story. No comedy tracks to divert the storyline either. Muthuraman and Balaji did their parts perfectly. At the end of the movie, I thought, this one could’ve come out better than ‘ooty varai uravu’ if the director had chosen a much more experienced pair for NT. How come I missed this movie earlier?

definitely Vaira Nenjam is a beautiful movie in many aspects.

youthful, handsome Sivaji sir (among his films with Sridhar, he is very smart in this movie comparing with others).
how handsome he is at the enquiry by duplicate police inspector at anna fly-over.

lovely songs and cool cinematography.

I used to watch this movie in repeated times. calm and cool.

One little cute scene that I like in ‘Deepam’ is; when Sujatha comes to NT’s house with his sister, without knowing he’s going to be there. After his sister moves away to prepare lunch, NT tries to get in Sujatha’s good books, He babbles that he doesn’t stay out late anymore, comes straight home after office. Then he would ask her whether she knows about a cyclone and her reply would be just a ‘hmm’, he would then utter; “what do you call, a kind of cyclone”. Then he would chuckle himself; having realized that he was actually trying very hard to impress her! A little embarrassment would pop up on his face instantly! Very cute! I rewound it and watched that scene a few times! While enjoying NT’s strong and long emotional performances, I like these kinds of minute treats too! When our NT experts say that he goes under the skin of the character, it means he imagines himself of that character’s tiny reactions too, I guess.

சிவாஜி என்றால் பலருக்கு ரொம்ப சௌகரியம் ... ஒரு பத்து படத்தை பாராட்ட வேண்டியது பின்னாலேயே அவருடைய படங்களில் சிலவற்றைக் குறிப்பிட்டு அவரை விமர்சிக்க வேண்டியது .. அப்புறம் அவருடைய ரசிகர்களுக்குள் மூட்டி விட வேண்டியது ... இப்படி எத்தனை பேர் கிளம்பியிருக்கிறார்களோ தெரியவில்லை ..

வாசு சார் ... சூப்பர் .... நெத்தியடி....
