Microsoft store is not selling the full retail version of the Windows 8 OS. But other sites like Amazon are selling both the OEM and the full retail version. I ordered the OEM version and it was at $80/-. If you can resolve your windows issues yourself without relying on Microsoft, you can go with OEM version. You can save $120/- since the retail version with support is getting sold at $190+ in some sites. Installation on my old Acer with 3GB memory was smooth for Windows 8. But the display flickers randomly due to problems with display drivers or graphics card.
I would say better try the development version on your system to check the compatibility or at least install it on a Type 2 hypervisor like Oracle Virtual Box or EMCs VM player before "going" straightaway with Windows 8.

I am thinking about the feasibility of installing some in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh. There are impressive articles about the inventor Arunachalam Muruganantham and also a Ted talk by him.
