Recently bought a CD which had 'Illam', 'Thanga Thamaraigal' and 'Pudhir'. Except for the 'hero hero' song which I have heard in Kannada, all others songs were new for me. I haven't heard of these films either. (I am sure many of you would know about these films.)

I find all the songs good but special mention to two of my current favorites, 'nandavanam' from 'Illam' and 'muthal mutham' from 'Pudhir'. SPB does a nice job in 'nandavanam', while 'muthal mutham' is a very delicate number done gorgeously by Jesudas and Janaki. The second interlude has lovely strings which are embellished by the flute and other instruments. The mild Kalyani tinge adds to the lustre of this song. Heavenly.

Here are the links:

'nandavanam' : http://www.thiraipaadal.com/albums/ALBIRR00189.html

Usha,

I had three versions of 'kodamanjin', male solo, female solo and the duet, recorded on my tape and used to play it in my car. Never have I felt bored listening to the same song 3 times continuously. Infact, in my mp3 player, I have six versions one after the other!!! The three versions in mp3 and the same versions in wma and I never skip even one of them!!! Such is my love for this song. Raja's take on Suddha Saveri ragam has always been nothing short of exceptional and this song confirms it.

Suresh, nandhavanam is my evergreen song which I am listening for the past 20 years but still I am feeling that as fresh number. I know you will hooked with that for next one month. :)

you will feel the freshness when you hear that again and again.

Great song from the movie sami potta mudichu

However I was looking for the folkish "Madhulam kaniye" sung by raja himself. That was the pick of the album.

Another nice song from Kilipechu Ketkavaa--

'kadhal kavidhaigal padithidum neram' from 'Gopurangal Saivadhillai'. A very unique treatment of Mayamalavagowla. Instead of following the general pattern of Mayamalavagowla, the way the song is structured seems to be on WCM lines. This is one good example of how to merge carnatic ragam with WCM. That the tune is very fetching helps as well. Sung with great finesse by SPB and Chitra as usual.

Plum,

Yes. I do have that version as well :) Of course Raja changes the charanam to get the Telugu flavour. I love the 'vara veena mrudupani' part a lot. Somehow that transports the whole song to Andhra Pradesh.

Very true about 'kombula poova suthi'. I remember our Bala(K) posting a video in which you can see Kamal singing this song in the studio in front of Raja. Excellent energy, very modern instrumentation and yet the 'mann vasanai' remains intact!!

Listening to 'chinna polike ledu'. As is typical of Raja's recent Telugu films, this also seems to be a total washout and one more gem goes unheard by the public. Unfortunate.

The way Raja has tuned this song and the instrumentation is mind boggling. There are so many things happening in the song but Raja makes it sound so very simple. Only when you listen keenly do you know how layered the instrumentation is even when the song is being sung, not only in the interludes. What I believe is that Raja is keeping the same complexity of orchestration but not making it as obvious as his 80s songs. This gives many of us a feeling that Raja is not orchestrating like old days. I don't think it is true. Listen to 'chinna polike' carefully and I am sure you will agree with me :)

Another one in the list, But the interludes are in a totally different world compared to the stanzas. The song follows a qawwali rhythm while the interludes are in thalaivar's true guitar flourishes. Just for these separation of two styles which for him is equivalent to toe dust is enough for us to listen again and again.

Besides the obvious comical feel and the carnatic tones of this song, its the rhythm(Not sure what beat cycle this is) which exchanges between tabla and mridhangam which amazes me. Thalaivar should be given a phD for using the wackiest combination of percussions and rhythms composed.

Also listening to 'unnai thedi thedi' from 'Konji Pesalam'. Love the way the bass is played during the pallavi. (Is it synth bass?) The interludes are nice with the bass always being present.

Many a times when I listen to Sadhna Sargam in Raja songs I get the same feeling as I get when listening to Hariharan. While she is undoubtedly a good singer, I am not too sure if she is well suited for Raja songs. Does anyone else have this feeling? Never get that when listening to Shreya sing any song of Raja.

Hulkster
21st May 2010, 05:19 PM
:exactly: She is suited only for thalaivar's extremely soulful melodies. I guess you have that feeling due to her very ghazal like voice which sounds abit like asha bhonsle and that we have a strong pre-image of S.Janaki, Chitra and Shreya usually singing thalaivar's songs.

'ஆரோ பாடுன்னு தூரெ'யுடைய கர்யோக்கி இசை. அருமை, அருமை :-)

When the recording centers those days used the karoke track of 'iLamai idhO idhO' to fill the ending part of cassette tapes, it was a big treat for instrumental lovers. Interestingly, it was left to play in whole even in buses.

At times I used to wonder how it would have been had the lead melody was included as instrumental as well (say in lead guitar / flute / solo violin / sax). That could have easily made it to the world's top smooth jazz stations without any question.

Same applies here too, if there's another version with sax, it will be an easy candidate for smooth jazz stations and will definitely be well received.

There was indeed an instrumental track by IR's team for the 'iLamanadhu' song of selvi (another end-filler-of-cassettes for recording centers). This one was not a karoke but the melody played using possibly a keyboard / accordian and was enjoyable (though not as good as the SPB/SJ version) :-)

வானவில்லே, வானவில்லே (ரமணா)

Sweet song, picturised nicely too.

Just finished watching the movie and the BGM is very appropriate and never loud as in the case of all current MDs.

Interestingly, IR is quite brilliant in ceasing to play any BGM at a number of places to enhance the effect! OTOH, where it calls for a grand score (as in the case of student uprise), his lets the strings loose to get the complete goosebump effect!

Master craftsman without doubt.

Oh Manne Manne - Pon Maane Theduthey (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2430')

Forget Murali's comments about him being successful due to thalaivar's music. Mohan here literally made a living from thalaivar's music. Even if Mohan builds a statue for thalaivar in front of Hollywood, he would still have 99 pereent of nandri kadan left in his debt bank.

Lilting song with piano breezing over the song especially in the prelude.

I have been listening to his old songs with one hope of finding unknown gems but in reality to discover his style of orchestration. I have got to say, that each album has atleast two songs that you wouldnt believe he composed within 1 day.

Its quite logical to see why the older fans tend to harp back to the glorious 80s for any comparison but to me it seems his present output has the same extravagance and uniqueness that comes with every song back in those days. Heck the extent of how he uses synth and their sounds have the same wackiness as of today. Perhaps the sound quality then didnt let them notice the similarity. :?

Another discovery about his erotic songs, is the tune has a very strong melody base when you compare to other seductive songs.

Classic song..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbomWqbTGKU&feature=channel

Composer Deepak dev says that a unique melody instrument similar to Harp was created only for this particular movie! This instrument was used extensively for re-recording and for the songs...Perhaps the first of its kind..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOERPUCyPr4

In the comments section both Alphonzh(vocalist in ARRs Vinnai thandi varuvaya) and deepak hints about the complexity of this composition.Deepak says that concentrating on the "shruthi" and the scale of the song is the real challenge for the singer here as the orchestration of this song is of a different level and if the singer follows the orchestra he may go out of shruthi and hence he should concentrate only on the scale of the song and never bother about the orchestra at all !!!

Usha and Hulkister, a lot of catching up for me to do regarding the obscure gems you people have unearthed . Hulkister, Raja showcased the best of his orchestration for such brazen, 'no-holds barred' numbers . "Mayakkamaa oru kalakkamaa" from "naan potta savaal", "nilavu neram" from "annai oru aalaiyam" being apt examples . Give them a listen at your own peril of losing your control.
My last Raja song :
"oru naaL unnodu oru NaaL" from yesteryear "Uravaadum nenjam". This might have been one of the first major "singles" hit in the IR's urban milieu before the media hastened to project him as the folklore Raja. I like the Janaki of this time period. The way she sings "oru naaL" is simply scintillating and so are the sharp violins and the sharper flute like instrument trying to overtake the violins in the first bgm. SPB lends that perfect match to Janaki

The way Raja builds up the tempo and the melody is worth savoring multiple times. The interludes are good but what is best in the song is how the instruments support the song throughout. 'pudhu pournami nilavu' from "Kannukulle'. A great song with inadequate singers. The pronunciation of the female singer is atrocious to say the least. Once you get over it, you will be amazed with the melody. raagas had pointed out earlier to Raja taking inspiration from his own work in 'India 24hrs' for this song. The charanam of this song is typical Raja. Observe how the first two lines of the charanam have a nice rhythmic lilt to them. Then he suddenly takes away that rhythm and brings in more melody. After two lines, the melody is taken away and a new rhythm comes in. The final line is so structured as if someone is finishing off his solo drumming. It wonderfully joins the pallavi. Top drawer stuff this.

'thondru thottu indru varai' from 'Avataram'. These are the type of situations Raja would relish. I haven't seen the movie but the lyrics make the situation clear. It is a cry of a poor man who has been subjugated for long and is ready for revolt. The song needs to convey both the anguish of the person as well as his anger with the system and then convey that he is ready to revolt. As usual, Raja chooses a tune which conveys all this. When I say a tune, I here mean the whole works, the tune as well as the orchestration. The choice of the rhythm, the chorous, the way the tune moves, the orchestration in the interludes, everything is done keeping the need to convey multiple emotions. And the song works big time in this regard. MV does a great job in conveying the multiple emotions and his voice suits the song very well. 'Avataram' is a classic and the other songs were played quite often but I feel this song deserves equal recognition. Do listen to it if you haven't already and you will not be disappointed.

When one listens to songs like this, the first thought that comes to mind is how this could have possibly been killed on-screen (fortunately, no youtube available for this grAma rAjan number) :-)

The next one is a mental debate as to which was the best IR period - well, this seems to be changing all the time. Infact, each time we listen to a special song from a time period, we think THAT was his best period :-)

'enna solli paaduvatho' from "En Mana Vaanil'. Superb melody. Sung well by Sadhana and Hariharan. This is one of those songs where the orchestra is constantly interacting with the singers. Answering them, prodding them, supporting them. It is an ever present orchestra but never do you feel that it is interfering with song. The orchestration does so much to enhance the experience of the song.

Two songs from Ajantha.

Engae Irunthai Isaiye - By IR. I love IR's version more because he brings in a more personal feel. The lyrics kind of resonate with his views of music. The 2nd interlude is so great... love the way the transition happening from the super cool Sax bit to the soulful piano & bass before starting the 2nd charanam.

Yaarum Thoda Ondrai - IR, ShreyaGoshal - What a song, what a prelude, stunning rendition by both IR & Shreya. I love the part where IR goes "NaNaaNaNaa" :notworthy: and the feel with which Shreya sings, no wonder all her songs for IR are so special.

Overall, in both songs, Synth has a lot more soul with IR. I love his post 2000 songs specifically for this reason.

rajkumarc,

I have to revisit the songs of 'Ajantha' soon. I have not heard the Tamil version. I have the Kannada one with me. What you say about Raja's synth and about Shreya is very true. Hope you read Ravi Natarajan's recent article on Techno Baroque Raja.

Listening to songs of 'Valmiki'. I am surprised at how far Shreya has come wrt Tamil pronunciation. 'thendralum marudu thingalum marudu' is as good as it gets in terms of pronunciation. There are few places where you can make out that a non-Tamilian is singing it but overall Shreya does a very nice job. Commendable dedication in getting her Tamil right. The song is also a very nice one. This song and the other song in the film 'oli tharum sooriyanum naanilai' are about encouraging people to lead a good / moral life. They are tuned wonderfully to give a feeling of peace. As kiru once wrote about 'oli tharum sooriyanum', if it were to be western pop song it would have topped the charts. Wonderful keyboard play throughout the song. 'Valmiki' is a top class album.

Suresh - Thanks for pointing out Ravi's article Techno Baroque and it's a very good read. I always try to catch up with Vicky and Ravi's blog as much as I can, their analysis of IR's music is very special.

Valmiki is one of my favorite albums of 2009, well I liked each and every album of IR in 2009  Kooda Varuviya, Oli Tharum and Poo Sirikuthu are great melodies in their own respect.

Shreya is an amazing talent and hope she sings more and more for IR.

Listening to 'En Mana Vaanil' album. Listening to 'roadoram paatu onnu ketkudha'. I am sure most of the modern MDs will baulk at giving a tune like this. I mean, this is a very sad tune, sung by a person in the lowest rung of the society. There is so much sadness in this song that many people just want to forward it. If you listen carefully, you will find that this is probably the best tune for such a situation!!! The whole feeling of helplessness, the sadness, everything comes down pat, both in the tune as well as in the lyrics. Not a song for the dance loving trendy youth nor for the weak hearted.

The song "Naan Irikkum" is such a lovely composition. Love the prelude a lot. He freaked out with those synthesizers. The 1st interlude is like a cocktail of traditional & synth stuff. The range of instruments is amazing. he used jal tarangam and even mridangam-tarang (if we can call it so). The taalam in charanam is almost like taalam in Thumbi Vaa song. And the 2nd interlude is such an innovative one. Traditional instruments followed by synthesizer backed by bass guitar. I cannot understand the feel of the song, if it is pathos (as felt at some points) or happy song (instruments just freak out, particularly the jazz trap kit backing).

I dont know how this song got lost in the avalanche of his other spectacular creations but this composition too deserves a prominent place in the gallery. Kudos to the Master!

Listening to the songs of 'Kadhal Kavidhai'. Haven't given this album a serious listening earlier. Liking it a lot. 'thad thom takadhimi thom' is a nice erotic number. Should got into the erotic thread. 'Diana Diana' has a different composition style.

Looked at the credits and surprisingly saw that the musicians were credited. It has Viji Manuel, Karthik Raja and Bharani on the keyboards and Purshottaman on the rhythm. One of the recording engineers in H.Sridhar !!

Listened on repeated mode the following songs from my old audio CD collection. "Sithagathi pookaLe" and "chinna chinna solleduthu" from "Rajakumaran" ,
"kaNmaNikku chinna chinna miNmiNigaL minna minna" from some unknown movie.
The first one is an appealing SUddhaSaveri , no less inferior to Raja's earlier works like "kovil mani oasai" , "Radha Radha nee yenge" or "kaadhal mayakkam" . Awesome rythm , interludes, enchanting voice of SPB/chitra all together make for an everlasting classic. "Chinna chinna solleduthu", a breezy pahaadi is an underrated beauty. May be the lead pair KJY and SJ were well past their prime and sounding aged could be the reason. Nevertheless the caressing interludes and flow in the tune can compensate for the above . I feel the the early 90's movies like "Rajakumaran" , "AraNmaNai KiLi" were few last films carrying vintage Rajaish flourish in the interludes. After mid 90's Raja changed the course to synth driven interludes or minimalistic approach , which some of us still have difficulty in accepting. Regarding the third song, it did not create any impression when I heard long ago. But yesterday I felt this cool song comes close to the league of upbeat, peppy numbers like "paakku vethalai potten pathalai" of "My dear Marthaandan" types.

Nice to see you after a long time.

I have heard the Suddha Saveri number but not the other one. Should hear that 'Rajakumaran' song.

Drove for 3 1/2 hrs from Tiruvannamali to Bangalore. All the way with Raja. My wife is a big fan of the late 70s and early 80s Raja. Heard only female solos of this period for more than 2hrs and some duets for the rest of the day. Every song a gem and we had not even covered one small portion of his repertoire. No one else in Indian film music has so many songs which are classics to their credit.

After advent of Rahman, people were enamoured with new voices as well as new sounds. During those times Raja still used the 'same old' voices. It was definitely difficult to counter Srinivas, Hariharan, UnniKrishnan, Udit Narayan and host of new male singers with Mano, Arunmozhi, Raja himself, Bhavatarini and his own standard torch bearers. It probably took Raja more time to change his singers than to change over to the synth. The new Raja has reconciled to the available singers today and to some extent I am happy with that fact.

I think kanmanikku chinna chinna is from chinna maapillai directed by santhana bharathi which had the much famous 'Kaattu kuyil paatu solla' and the erotic 'Vennilavu kodhippadhenna'. This song was a much more functional song, yet effectively tuned and arranged. the other song that Suresh is referring to is from Telugu 'Rajkumar' - the song is 'Janaki kanalolenu' is a delightful sudhdha saveri and please do not watch the video for it is an orthagonal picturisation of the song and might not create the divine mood the song entices. Raj (hubber raj_musing) wrote a delightful piece on this song in his blog.

Suresh,

I think even IR was experimental with singers at a point of time.especially in late 70s and early 80s, he used many singers, other than the usuals, such as Jency,Sasirekha,Vani Jayaram, SP Sailaja,Uma Ramanan,Sujatha,Jayachandran,Deepan Chakravarthy etc.But somewhere towards late 80s or so,he settled for SPB,SJ,Chitra,KJY completely (with few exceptions like a Malaysia Vasudevan at times or Swarnalatha at times etc). The diverse array of singers that existed in late 70s and early 80s didnt exist as much in late 80s and early 90s. we dont know if it was conscious choice and just that he was going with the flow.I think that slowly became one of the neglected areas (of not trying other singers) may be unknowingly. Infact, even in 90s, there are not MANY songs by newer singers. There were few but not as much. But then, post 2000, he suddenly started taking Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, Sujatha, Shreya Ghoshal, Unnikrishnan etc. As always, we might like some and dislike some. But for a composer, it is important to not get stuck somewhere and keep moving on with the times. I am glad he does that now, though he missed that back in 90s.

Sureshs65

raagas,

I think the reason for using the same singers was simple. They could deliver and Raja was composing like mad. Those were the times when time was at a premium. I mean, he used to do some 40 to 50 films a year. Do the songs and then do the BGM. I don't think there was time enough to look out for new singers, teach them and get the job done. So there would have been no option but to take on people who can grasp fast, deliver in one take and start the next song. If you look at Rahman, YSR or Harris, they do very less films in a year and they can afford a singer to do some zillion takes and then cut and paste stuff. That was probably not an option in those hectic times. And given Raja's need for perfection, it would have been nightmare. And who can blame Raja for making SPB, KJY or SJ for they were delivering top quality stuff all the while. Even though we have lot of singers now, no one really equals SPB, KJY or SJ yet.

My grouse would be with his using Mano , Arunmozhi and himself quite extensively during the late 90s. Somehow that made his songs sound 'dated' during those times. We may love those songs a lot now but during those times, it was like 'Oh no. Not the same old singers!!!'.

He seems to have settled quite comfortably with the newer set of singers now, which is good. Shreya has been doing a great job. Bela Shinde was also good, except for her pronunciation. Karthik, Rahul Nambiyar, Tippu et al are doing a decent job, though I wouldn't yet call their singing outstanding.

Shank
15th June 2010, 05:24 PM
It has always been a mis-conception that Raja did not use new singers. Infact, I had compiled a list of singers who had all gotten their first chance with Raja and that list is amazing. I'll have to search that list up.

Also, to add to Suresh's points, the style of recording a song has changed now. Earlier it was a live take with an orchestra and so you needed people who could deliver with perfection (especially while doing 50 films a year). But now with cut-paste methodology, you can try out less versatile singera and get away with it.

Sureshs65
15th June 2010, 05:42 PM
Shank,

I will agree with you about lot of singers getting their break with Raja. I was just referring to one particular period, probably around 94 to 98 where we had too much of Mano, Raja and Arunmozhi whereas other music directors were using new voices. So I am talking about a particular period and even here I don't have statistics with me. I am just talking about the perception. It is very much possible that new voices were used but did not gain prominence.

Adding to your point on technology, not only cut and paste but also pitch adjustments, auto tuning etc are used to make even the mundane voice sound good. So, yes, you can get away with a very mediocre singer nowadays.

late 90s most of the IR films had singers like Unni krishnan, Hariharan and various new singers. Kadhalukku mariyaadhai had predominantly hariharan and kjy (mandatory for a fazil film). This is my view after having scourged the thiraipaadal for late 90s gems from Raja. One thing u can blame IR is usage of his own voice which was predominant in late 90s. It is in 2000s that ppl like Karthik, tippu and Ranjit and Rahul made their entry. With stalwarts like SPB, KJY and MV reducing their songs, there was a general lacuna in younger singers. not the one to use engineering to support an incapable singer, Raja had to sing himself. Hari and shankar mahadevan are way too costly for most of the low budget movies that IR was scoring. In this period he has given chance to many female voices which did not work out as much as he would have wanted.

Jai,

I remember app_eng suggesting that the financial angle would have had a role to play in the selection of Mano and Arunmozhi. Not to mention Raja himself.

I am reminded of a related incident when you talk about the cost of Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan. I heard in one of these singing shows, Oesepachan, the Malayalam MD relating an incident. Seems like he had come up with a nice semi classical tune. The film crew decided that they should get someone from up north to sing this song and zoomed in on Subha Mudgal. When the tried getting her to sing, they realized that her fees alone was equal to the complete budget allocated for the music of the movie!!! Obviously the idea was dropped.

'kothaga rekkalochena' from 'Swarnakamalam'. The pallavi starts as 'kothaga rekkalochena gootiloni goova pillaki'. Which translates to, "Has the bird in the nest developed her wings?" This has to do with the heroine who realizes her potential in the movie. It is an image of a bird about to take flight and the tune superbly reflects it. The way he starts of 'kothagaaaaa' and the whole of first line depicts this flight aurally. Then comes 'metthaga', which means 'softly' and the tune immediately turns soft there. This is where I get confused. Should I be praising Raja for conceiving up this tune or Sirivennela for plugging in the appropriate words. If Raja had conceived the tune first, hats off to him for thinking of such a tune which conveys the new born confidence of the heroine and more kudos to Sirivennela for putting in the right words at the right places. If it was Sirivennela who gave the lyrics first (this is a possibility because of this being a K Vishwanath enterprise), then I am even more stunned by Raja's genius. Overall, I have to say this is an excellent lyricist MD combination which conveys the situation both verbally and aurally. The end result is pure magic.

My own feeling is that the tune may have come up first. I was also listening to a precursor to this tune, which happens to 'manase paadinadi' from 'Sankeerthana. What a joyful tune this is. Once again, I am reminded of the phrase coined by Plum, 'narrative integrity', when I hear both these songs.

I was talking about 1987-1995/1998 period. IR took shankar Mahadevan in 1998/1999 itself, for films like Anthapuram or Nilave Mugam Kaattu.I meant to say that 'generally' a typical IR album from late 70s or early 80s had names like Jency, Radhika or even Lata Rajnikanth, Uma Ramanan, SJ, Vanijayaram. The songs were spread between them in various albums. But as late 80s approached, the concentration of Chitra/SJ or SPB/KJY increased. Nothing to take away their talent. I am talking about sheer numbers. And this trend persisted till 1995 or 1998 may be. After that, the diversity spread again began to increase.

Suresh had a valid point that those were the years when the number of his films peaked. So time constraints could be the reason. Thats why i said that it could have happened unknowingly, without his conscious move.

But yes, SPB/KJY/Chitra etc were all good under his baton. Even SJ too.But just that i personally disagree with IR & other fans, about this one aspect - usage of SJ's voice left right & centre. like it or hate it guys, but i feel this is one area i feel IR's choice wasnt good, with all due respects to her talent.I have no problems with her talent.Just that her voice is not ear-friendly (like Susheela's voice) for me.

Plum

There are songs where Janaki seems irreplaceable with her sheer talent(her voice has a take-it-or-leave-it quality, and it is a measure of her talent that despite my "leave-it" reaction to her voice, many songs she seems irreplaceable to me, and I just cant imagine liking it in any other voice). kAtril endhan geetham for instance. Shreya Ghoshal might have the sweetest voice ever gifted to man kind, and phenomenally talented but she still doesnt bring the edge, the intensity that SJ does to the song. theeram thedi from uNaroo is another example, so is nagoo endhidhe.

Then there are songs where her special talent is not needed, and a simple, good voice would do, and those are the songs where one doesnt want SJ. magaLir mattum in the later stages(where she does phenomenal voice gymnastics but leaves one cold), and many middling songs during the 80's are examples

Plum,

You hit the spot when you say Janaki has a 'take it or leave it' quality as far as the voice is concerned. Very true. Janaki's voice is an acquired taste for many unlike the voices of Lata or Susheela. When Raja wrote his first biography in one of the Tamil magazines, he said, "Lata Manageshkar had the sweetest voice but only Janaki can deliver what I want."

When I go beyond the voice and listen to the emotion that is brought out by the singer, we need to give full marks to Janaki. This is something which Jai had mentioned earlier. Was listening to 'sivappojaku chigurinchina' yesterday and this is one song I felt that Janaki would probably have a done a better job. Don't get me wrong. Susheela's rendition is top class and her voice drips honey, as always. But Janaki would have probably brought forth the defiance in the heroine's character much better. Going by the pure sweetness in the voice, Janaki is probably not the one you would put on a pedestal but going by how she was able to convey the intended emotion, I would put her right there at the top.

Coming to raagas point, whether Janaki was overused or not would depend on whether you love her voice or not :)

oh plum & suresh, my issue is not with emotional depth or perfection in singing.she is bang there. My only issue is the shrillness, the pitch, the tonal aspect. It isnt soft and mellow on my ears. I agree with plum.. there are songs that work only with Janaki. For me, the softer songs work perfectly.something like putham pudhu kaalai or Chinna Thaayaval or O Vasantha Raaja.
Like i said, it all gets down to how much shrillness my ears can take.

raagas,

I too was not a great lover of Janaki's shrillness. Infact I used to once joke that whenever there was silence in Janaki's song she has not stopped singing but just that she is singing in a range which cannot be heard by humans!!! From that time I have come a long way and most of her songs don't hurt me too much now.

Undeniably, Janaki is very talented...has superb voice control. Sure, her voice may not be the liking of some, but she delivered superbly for Raja.

One of my favorites...the vibrato effect that she brings at the end of each line is extraordinary "Etha Poovilum Vaasam" from Murattu Kaalai.

Shankar, for precisely reasons you mentioned, that is why I mentioned that even though her voice, apart from being not a favourite, is actually not very tolerable for me, still many of her songs I cant imagine I'll like without her singing it.

Imagine such monumental talent that overwhelms you enough to overlook one of the most important attributes one looks for in that field of excellence - it is mind boggling. I think though SPB and S Janaki keep praising each other as the better singer, I think SPB is probably aware of this dynamic and though he is usually faux-modest, I think his praise for Janaki encompasses this dynamic.

When you like SPB's song, part of the liking is for his silken, smooth voice. He starts with an advantage. I think Janaki's is a bigger achievement to become such a grand legend in TFM.

ஆராரோ பாட வந்தேனே, ஆவாரம் பூவின் செந்தேனே

(பி சுசீலா, பொறுத்தது போதும்)

Got this song from that thAlAttu blog and it's on loop this morning. Googled to find out the movie's name (how many such obscure movies during that time period, my goodness!)

Made in the 'chinnanjiru kiLiyE' format (dhum-dhumttA..ttA rhythm to start with and changeover to regular running style tabla in the saraNam), this song has such a sweet melody.

அதுவும் அந்த 'தென்னாட்டின் மன்னன் தானே, நான் தாலாட்டும் கண்ணன் தானே' பாகத்தில் வரும் சில கமக்க இழுப்புகள் oow!

PS = HMV for me (his mother's voice) and this song perfectly suits the theme. That she struggles a bit in parts of the saraNam is quite obvious - possibly the age factor. Sweet song, nevertheless.

I'm not very good after 1986 - Palakkad jeevitham :-) This movie is supposed to be a 1989-er. thiraippAdal does not seem to have the PS solo version, it has a PS-IR version. Typically, such songs should have been IR favourites i.e. he retained the 'track' version on the final release.

Was scanning the dishnet channels at my sis place (it has Sun, Jaya & KTV apart from some indhi stuff).

Amused to see Vishu conducting a dharbAr in Jaya TV (while TR showing off in arattai arangam in Sun TV).

They were highlighting a riot by village people on accidents in Trichy-Tanjore road -as the spot is near my college, started watching it.

Boom - they showed a bunch of newspaper clippings on this trouble - with a phenomenally powerful SPB song as the background (ofcourse IR's terrific score playing along) - as they started in the saraNam, I didn't get it until a minute or so.

Gandhi dhEsamE, kAval illaiyA - very apt for the news report being discussed on the program and obviously hair-raising music!

Actually, this song wasn't that powerful (to me) when it got released or later when watching the movie (nAn sigappu manithan). I was convinced at that time that IR's scores aren't as good as those of predecessors (and my reasoning then was they lacked the majestic TMS) for social themes.

Interestingly, it works very well today - after a couple of decades :-)

Smooth start to the morning with

'rAppAdi' from the Malayalam original was a sweet song, a favourite for the two sweet girls of the house adjusant to ours. They used to spend most of their time with my wife during our 1st yr of marriage (calling her 'chiththi', after befriending my little niece who was with us during our first week of new kudiththanam). Listening to the 'karpoora mullai' song brought back those memories :-)

While that one is a thuLLal Chitra song, 'poongAviyum' is a typical soothing melodious song with IR's signature tabla sounds :-)

To me, the pallavi is average but the saraNam portion is phenomenally impressive! It just gets better during the 2nd saraNam with PS & KSC joining, taking the song to much greater heights.

Both these voices sound like alternating flutes - one with single frequency and another with multifrequency :-) I think PS has that unique voice among all Indian singers that possibly has extremely sharp frequency component(s) - close to flute or sine wave oscillator :-)

I'll happily vote for this genre of IR songs as his best!

Sounded like Chitra to me, need to hear again at home.

BTW, this link (http://www.palanikumar.com/filmsongdetails.phtml?filmid=1264&songid=4407) says it's Chitra. Interestingly, the male voice is one VeeramaNi. I felt this can't be KJY and that seems to be correct. There's another KJY version as well.
