Way back in 2004, while visiting Madurai and Tirunelveli, I found that Vijay was hugely popular (accounts from guys running tea stall, hotel server, bus driver/conductor etc).. his popularity is/has never been in doubt..

I am not a visitor but a resident. Both AJ and VJ have a good fanbase in the south. VJ Kanth's fan base was even bigger than Kamal and almost equivalent to Rajni's in the southern states. Vijay could get Kerala market fine. But he was never appreciated in Andhra (may be he was doing lots of mahesh babu remakes). Andhra market is much bigger than Kerala. Jilla did OK but it has mohanlal in it. Puli is also not a big hit. For some reason they did not release the dubbed version of kaththi in Andhra.Quote:

Moreover, Rajini's blockbuster Chandramukhi is a remake from malayaalam. Then it was dubbed remade to Telugu (*ing Rajini) and became a Block buster in Telugu too!

Is that supposed to be a joke? Every sane member here knows what Thuppaaki and Kaththi earned. They are Vijay's 100 crore grossers. KM, Ghilli and Pokkiri were his biggest hits when those movies released. He has equal number of hits with straight films like he has with remakes. Poove Unakkaga, Kushi, Thirupachi, TMT etc were blockbusters too. But still they will be hidden by few agenda driven people for the sake of branding him as an actor who travels safely with remakes.Quote:
