Sridevi will be a good choice for his pair, but for an IPS officer ?
Sridevi in Kamal's next?
Who would not love to see Kamal Hassan and Sridevi together! If things go well both of these big personalities can come together for the malayalam remake "Dhrishyam" which originally had Mohanlal and Meena in the lead cast. Sridevi who made a comeback to Indian cinema with English Vinglish has been requested to play the role of an IPS officer for this movie, however there is no official confirmation yet. There are also talks to sign up Ramya Krishnan for the IPS role if Sridevi could not make it and Asha who played in the Mollywood movie is also a contender for the role.
Gautami leads the top contender for essaying Kamal's pair in the movie, failing which the part is expected to go to Virumandi fame Abirami or even Meena who played in the original.
Albeit with Uthama villain in its final stages Kamal is on a foray indeed!.

COURT BANS TAMIL REMAKE OF KAMAL HAASAN'S MOVIE
It seems the controversy related to the movie Drishyam will not die down anytime soon. On the heels of Bollywood producer Ekta Kapoor sending a legal notice to the makers of the movie, Malayalam writer and film director Sathish Paul has filed a petition in the Ernakulam court. He had alleged that the movie is taken from his novel, OruMazhakalathu. Sathish is the director of a Malayalam movie, Crime Thriller Finger Print, which starred Jayaram and Indrajith. Sathish has stated that he was planning to make the book into a movie in Tamil with the title, Oru Chennai Crime Story and the move by the makers of Drishyam has upset his plans and hence he preferred the petition.
Based on the petition, the Ernakulam Sessions Court has given an injunction to stop the work on the Tamil remake of the film.
Kamal and movie controversies go hand in hand! But I was thinking Drishyam is based from a Japanese based movie/novel .... and the original Malayalam was made more than a year ago. Why raise it now ? His claim doesnt look authentic .. Hindi remake is probably a different story.
Now we can expect comments across the internet - "This is all just hype created by Kamal for his next movie"
Normally these kind of things come up when the film nearing completion, this time the problems started before the shooting commences..
Would be good to see Kamal in Drishyam because it is a sure bet in box office - though personally I am not that excited about it.
UV also not very hopeful.. some MA feel...
VR2 is the only hope now...

There is a healthy(not openly told?!) competition going between Shankar and Kamal..
Shankar made Sivaji, Kamal made Dasa to beat that...
Then Shankar made Endhiran, technically the best Tamil film till then. Kamal made VR. Not sure whether VR has broken collection records of Endhiran, but in terms of Grandeur and technical aspects it emerged as a best Indian / Tamil film.
Now Shankar is making "Ai" which may be better than VR's technical standards... Kamal is making VR-2 as well.
Let us hope both these films are on par with each other and prove to be treat for fans.
If both of them join together will it be a loss or gain for the Industry?
Both are winners their own ways ... Shankar has a higher glamor quotient than UN and UN has a better screen play/story line etc. Most UN fans probably like VR better than endiran .. but Shankar may appeal to a slightly wider audience I would think. It'll provide more variety if they could come together once a while ..
If we take 'Indian' which is a UN/Shankar movie, the first half and the part with younger Kamal is mostly glamour with chart buster songs, Koundamani/Senthil comedy and so forth. The part with Kamal as 'Indian Thatha' stayed in people's minds a lot more. It had both glamour and good screen play together.
Thats probably what we can expect with Shankar and Kamal together.
Indhian is one of the many KH movies which I love to watch again and again. During its release, the impact made by the movie among all classes and masses was just amazing. I wonder if any section of the audience was dissatisfied with it - Some HCKH fans still disown it and don't consider it among Kamal's best as they feel it is more of a Shankar movie than Kamal's, but even these fans can't control themselves from cheering for Indian Thatha. I would rate it among ARR's best too. Not just the songs but the movie has some terrific BGM bits. Not to forget the other cast & technicians involved in making it so memorable - Goundamani, Manisha, Thotta Tharani, Sujatha, Jeeva, Nedumudi Venu
If the two come together again now, we have all chances of re-writing box office history again :-)

Thanks for the info, Ravi sir
I don tthink so...I am ARR fan and Kamal admirer... I don't rate Indian as ARR / Kamal / Shankar's best.................... screenplay was very good.. agreed, theme brilliant... BGM ok...songs......yeah fine.............. (Lovebirds malargale songs beats ah akkada ku use panniruppar) telephone mani pol and pachai kiligal songs thavira other songs gels nicely only with visuals.. enakkenamo younger kamal acting natural ah illama konjam forced ah iruntha maathiriye irunthathu...therila..may be my view or kamal might not be in agreement with those portions......and indian thatha make up............... in heyram the old man get up looked more natural, here mask ah ottitu nadicha maathiri than irunthathu (thatz the case anyway).......... Indian is a many time watch film of course but not in the league of best ............... of course this is my opinion
To me, Nayakan wins over Indian. Though it is not a commercial like Indian, it still attracts me everytime it gets aired. Mindblowing performance by Velu nayakkar and supporting characters. Songs and BGM score would suck you before you realize that magic. Watching the movie is like painting a canvas of Velu nayakkar from the start to end and you become part of his life.
Indian on the other hand is in and out an entertainer with all commercial elements. Its like "oru kaithiyin diary" for me. Kamal's comparison on these two films does not make sense.
Shankar is a 100% commercial director and his movies have an abundance of hit songs, great visuals, and comedy elements .. His movies definitely have a higher box office hit rate than most others - which is a producer's delight! And right, we cant compare of UN movies of various directors. As HH pointed out, Indian may not entertain some KH fans but it certainly had a very much wider appeal. Nayagan - agree its a notch higher with its lingering theme music but again not sure if everybody feels that way.
But KH fans themselves are very diversified as a community. Some like Thevar Magan more than Nayagan and I personally liked Mahanadhi the most for its wonderful portrayal uninterrupted of what a society can do to an ordinary someone who was trying to lead a simple but contended life. Not many would watch Mahanadhi more than once. But for me it was a realization of what the society can be made of. HeyRam, although a great movie, I felt there were portions that impeded the flow. Again, many UN fans may like it the most. Yet there're other UN fans who relish his regular commercial movies with dance, songs, fight etc. and dont care for his other genre movies.
I guess its a mixed bag.
'Indian Thatha' had a lot of appeal despite not looking so natural! Even among the hindi audience ... Younger Kamal, mostly glamour.
SPB's Maya-machindra song was dynamic and entertaining with UN morphing to a lion/lizard etc. Fully commercial :)
Pachai-Kiligal was superb .. no doubt.
Other songs atleast in top 10 ...
Thank you Ravi Sir.
So nice of you to post the statistics here. I have few questions on this business. Please throw some light.
1) Who owns the rights of these old movies & from whom do the theatre owners buy prints? Even for re-release do they have middlemen like distributors or is it just a deal between seller & theatre owners?
2) How is the Price determined? Is it based on past performance of the re-release OR Box office result of its Initial release OR just the clout of the actor/producer?
Nayagan actually re-defined commercial cinema. It was the right mix of class & mass elements. It was a trendsetter in many many ways - storywise, technical aspects like camera/editing, acting, music, dialogues - what not? And so we had at least a dozen follow-ups in late 80s and early 90s.
Yes, it was made differently and it did break many rules which were followed by 80's commercial movies, eventually becoming a trendsetter in several aspects of film making. It is tough to even list the number of styles the movie changed, which is why I said it 're-defined' the term commercial cinema.
But all these were done within the commercial framework. There was a raunchy item number and a club dance which were entirely different from the cabarets which were were accustomed to watching in early 80s. The hero had a mass opening scene, followed by a stunt sequence, followed by a song, a romantic track, another stunt and it continued. BUT the blood, gore and wounds were almost real, never seen before in TFI. There was a truck load of punch lines, not one of them conventional. The only commercial element it lacked was a comedy track, but no one complained. However, Janakaraj as Selva was a treat to watch.
After Nayagan, villains got out of their den and no longer sported bizarre wigs, suits and henchmen with names like Raabat, Peter. Every hero wanted to be the larger than life don with grey shades. Violence in Tamil cinema doubled, tripled and quadrupled, thanks to the success of Mani's follow-up, Thalapathy.
None of these were, in any manner arty. It was definitely a கலைப்படைப்பு, I agree, probably made with an intention to grab awards but it was loved by the audience unanimously and led TFI to a new path.
I really dont think you could bracket this under the art film category. It's more artistic than any other movie released at that time for sure, but under the conventions of mainstream cinema like how h_h pointed out. Just curious Venki, what are all the other KH movies that you would put under the art category?
Nayagan is a crossover film.
A movie emerges to be a crossover film if and only if its comerically sucessful, keeping intact the rest of the genres, else it rests with one specific genre or becomes just a blockbuster or wins an accolode just for the sake of it.
A crossover film is a filmwork which appeals to the normal audience, captures anyone inside genre preferences, makes money and last but not least catches the attention of non-regional and international audience too. Its a peculiar genre, but what Nayagan did was unique. Usually a crossover film tries to appeal to each and everyone, and the theme or plot they take is more on scales known to everyone - like historical war or myths or a famous book/novel, etc., - but Nayagan took a story of a character least known to the world and made heads turn. Moreover each scene was discussed & rehersed - a rare item in filmwork - and what we saw/see as the output was/is just fabulous.
A commercial film is often produced by big banners, sometimes in assosiation with international production houses or even funded by annonymous investers. Its main goal is to mint money. Nayagan is a commercial film.
An art film is often an indie-film, with limited theatrical releases and wins home as much accolodes as possible - the main reason for its making. Nayagan is an Art Film. (Some art films try to deviate and teach few aspects in film work, but they are becoming rarer and rarer these days.)
A realistic film is the one which is similar to art film (for exemple no lavish cost spent over makeup) but has all the elements to mint money. Nayagan is a Realistic film.
The word "Artistic" can be coined to any film, omitting all the blockbusters churning out today. So having all these words in the same sentence defies the meaning that one wishes to convey. Nayagan did bring few changes, any film can do that/have done that, if only its sucessful. Imagine if Nayagan was a dud, we would not be having this discussion on how influential the film is. HeyRam is a hit, then, most movies will be moving there scenes with musical variations even depicting the raagas of sunset and sunrise from a musical piece. Did it happen or have we had anyother movie that quenched our thirst.
In conclusion - Each period (a given range of time) has a filmwork which redefines the circuit a bit once in a while. Nayagan is one such CULT film which will not AGE atall.
