Ilayaraaja and Mundasupatti-II??
I just watched the quirky comedy hit film "Mundasupatti" which I am sure many of you would have enjoyed. It's been the biggest hit film in Tamil in 2014 and Fox Star studios had a dream run at the box office collection. The movie pales in comparison to mega budget production like Kochadaiyaan. The movie is set in 1982 period and all the background songs are naturally hits of Ilayaraaja. The Director has tried to play the right Raaja's song bits during important sequences. But the background score and songs was a let down. The MD, Sean Roldan has attempted to introduce new singers to render village based folk songs but the tunes are below average. If Ilayaraaja's song bits are played throughout the movie, why not just lift some of his best village songs and play it. Director Sasikumar brilliantly used the song sequence "Siru Ponmani" in "Subramaniapuram movie. I doubt if James Vasanthan could not have composed a better song than "Siru Ponmani" or any other MD. Those IR songs are etched in stone that no one can ever come closer to that melody. Now Director Ram and Fox Star have announced Mundasupatti-II with a new story line. I request Ram & Sean to just use Ilayaraaja's rural tunes for background score and perhaps some original IR album songs for his sequel film. This can spare Sean Roldan much effort to compose new songs which is anyway going to be mediocre. Why try to copy a legend's work when the legend himself is churning out hits? Mundasupatti-II can use some of the best songs from Bharathiraaja's films which were beautifully choreographed. Let's wait and watch.
