உரிமைக்குரல் பற்றி எனக்கு தெரிந்த தகவல்..உரிமைக்குரல் ஸ்ரீதர் படம் என்றாலும் பெரும்பாலான காட்சிகள் எம்ஜிஆரின் ஆலோசனைப்படியே எடுக்கப்பட்டது..உதாரணத்திற்கு ஒன்று சொல்ல வேண்டுமானால், விழியே கதை எழுது பாடல்...முதலில் இந்த பாடல் முழுவதும் ஆற்றங்கரையிலே சோகப்பாடலாக எடுக்க தீர்மானிக்கப்பட்டது..அப்போது மக்கள் திலகம் குறுக்கிட்டு இதில் ஒரு கனவு காட்சியை சேருங்கள் என்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்..ஸ்ரீதர் அவர்களுக்கு அதில் கொஞ்சமும் விருப்பமில்லை..வேண்டாமே அப்படியே இருக்கட்டும் என்றார்..ஆனால் தலைவர் அவர்களோ நீங்கள் கனவு சீன் வையுங்கள்..நிச்சயம் நன்றாய் இருக்கும்..அனைவரையும் இழுக்கும் என்றார்...ஸ்ரீதர் அரை மனதோடு ஒத்துக்கொண்டார்..மேலும் அந்த கனவு காட்சியில் தேவ தூதர்கள் போல இறக்கை வைக்க சொல்லவும் ஸ்ரீதருக்கு மிகவும் பயமாக போய்விட்டது..எம்ஜிஆர் வற்புறுத்தலால் அதுவும் நிறைவேறியது..படம் ரிலீஸ் ஆகி அந்த பாடலுக்கு மக்களிடம் கிடைத்த வரவேற்பை பார்த்ததும்தான்..எம்ஜிஆரின் மீது ஸ்ரீதருக்கு மேலும் மதிப்பு கூடியது..இவர் இயக்குனருக்கே இயக்குனர் என புகழ்ந்தார்...அந்த பாடல் இன்னும் சாகா வரம் பெற்றிருக்கிறது..மேலும் ஒரு தகவல்...பல படங்கள் எடுத்து ஸ்ரீதரின் சித்ராலய நிறுவனம் பெரும் கடனில் சிக்கியபோது, ஹீரோ 72 (பின்னர் வைர நெஞ்சம்) என்ற படத்தை முடிக்க முடியாமல் தவித்தபோது..எம்ஜிஆரை வைத்து படம் எடுங்கள் உங்கள் பிரச்சினைகள் எல்லாம் தீரும் என்று யோசனை சொன்னவர் ஹிந்தி நடிகர் ராஜேந்திர குமார்..தலைவரும் ஆபத்தாண்டவனாக ஸ்ரீதருக்கு குறுகிய காலத்திலே ஒரு பெரிய வெற்றி படத்தை முடித்து கொடுத்து ஸ்ரீதரின் கடன் சுமையைக் குறைத்து அவர் வாழ்க்கையில் விளக்கேற்றி ஒளிவிளக்கானார்.

மாலைமலர் எப்போதுமே முன்னுக்கு பின் முரணாக எழுதும் வழக்கம் கொண்ட ஒரு செய்தித்தாள்...
அதை இதை பார்த்து நண்பர்கள் புரிந்துகொள்ளலாம்.

அதில் ஸ்ரீதரின் சித்ராலயா, தமிழிலும், இந்தியிலும் பல படங்களை தயாரித்தது. ஒரு சில படங்கள் தோல்வி அடைந்தாலும், பெரும்பாலான படங்கள் வெற்றி பெற்றன. பெரும்பாலான படங்கள் வெற்றி பெற்றால் பொருளாதார நெருக்கடி ஒருவருக்கு வரும் என்பது மாலைமலரின் நம்பிக்கை போலும் ! கோவை செழியன் தயாரித்த 'சுமைதாங்கி'யை, ஸ்ரீதர் டைரக்ட் செய்தார்.

ஜெமினிகணேசன் -தேவிகா நடித்த அந்தப்படம், வர்த்தக ரீதியில் பெரிய லாபம் சம்பாதித்துக் கொடுக்கவில்லை யென்றாலும், நல்ல பெயரை சம்பாதித்துக் கொடுத்தது. தனக்கு இன்னொரு படத்தை டைரக்ட் செய்து தரும்படி ஸ்ரீதரிடம் கோவை செழியன் கேட்டுக்கொண்டதன் பேரில், ஸ்ரீதர் இயக்கிய படம் 'ஊட்டி வரை உறவு.' சிவாஜிகணேசனும், கே.ஆர்.விஜயாவும் நடித்த இந்தப்படம் சூப்பர் ஹிட்டாக அமைந்தது.

கலர்ப்படங்கள் மிகுதியாக வந்து கொண்டிருந்த காலக்கட்டத்தில், 'நெஞ்சிருக்கும் வரை' படத்தை கறுப்பு - வெள்ளையில் ஸ்ரீதர் தயாரித்தார். காரணம், வறுமையை மையமாகக் கொண்ட கதை.எனவே சிவாஜி கணேசன், முத்துராமன், கே.ஆர். விஜயா ஆகியோர் நடித்த இந்தப் படத்தை கறுப்பு -வெள்ளையில் எடுத்ததுடன், நட்சத்திரங்களுக்கு 'மேக்கப்' கூட போடவில்லை. படம், யதார்த்தமாக இயற்கையாக எடுக்கப்பட்டது. படம் ரிலீஸ் ஆனபோது, போஸ்டர்கள் கூட கறுப்பு - வெள்ளையில்தான் அச்சிடப்பட்டன. படம் வெற்றி பெற்றது.

பின்னர் ஸ்ரீதர் தயாரித்த பிரமாண்டமான படம் 'சிவந்த மண்.' ஏற்கனவே எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்காக 'அன்று சிந்திய ரத்தம்' என்ற பெயரில் தயாரான கதைதான் இது.

சில ஆயிரம் அடிகள் எடுக்கப்பட்டபின், எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் கால்ஷீட் கிடைக்காததால், படம் கைவிடப்பட்டது.

அதே கதையை சில மாற்றங்களுடன் 'சிவந்த மண்' என்ற பெயரில் தமிழிலும், 'தர்த்தி' என்ற பெயரில் இந்தியிலும் தயாரித்தார், ஸ்ரீதர். ஏராளமான பொருட் செலவில் தயாரான 'சிவந்த மண்', தமிழில் வெற்றிகரமாக ஓடியது. ஆனால், இந்தியில் எதிர்பார்த்த அளவு ஓடவில்லை (This itself is a wrong news, Dharthi was a Silver Jubilee Film in Hindi of Rajendrakumar and Waheedha Rahman. கால்ஷீட் பிரச்சனை என்பது கதாநாயகர்களுக்கு வருவது தவிர்க்கமுடியாதது அதிலும் ஒரு நாளில் மூன்று ஷிப்ட்களில் நடிக்கும் கதாநாயகன் நடிகர் திலகம். அதாவது 24 மணிநேரம் ஒரு நாள் என்றால் ஒரு கால்ஷீட் குறைந்தது 6 மணிநேரம் முதல் 61/4 மணிநேரம் வரை என்பதை தெளிவுபடுத்தவிரும்புகிரேன் ! அவருடைய உழைப்பு 20 மணிநேரம் ஒரு நாளைக்கு என்பது திரை உலகில் அனைவரும் வியந்த ஒரு விஷயம்..

ஸ்ரீதரின் இயக்கத்தில் வந்த சிறந்த படம், சிறந்த பாடல், சிறந்த கதை, சிறந்த திரைப்படங்களுக்கு மக்கள் என்றுமே வரவேற்ப்பு கொடுத்ததுண்டு. ஸ்ரீதரின் பல வெற்றி படங்களில் ஒன்று உரிமைக்குரல் என்பது மறுக்கமுடியாத மறைக்க முடியாத உண்மை.

Sorry, Eswee, I misread it as though Kannadhasan was representing DMK since it appeared just above his name. Anyway, Eswee, since you were privy to all those happenings around this period you will be the best source to report as it is without bias.

Bye the way, since you mentioned Kannadhasan I am duty-bound to add a bit of info which I had sourced earlier. As it is well-known the relationship between MGR and Kannadhasan can be likened to that of a husband and wife. When MGR telephoned Kannadhasan some where in 1978 to inform that he is going to appoint him as the poet laureate of the Tamil Nadu State Government the latter was apprehensive. He should know because he was a vocal critic of MGR whether orally or through his writings. Kannadhasan felt guilty and did point out to MGR that people might talk badly. But MGR explained that one should not live the life according to how people perceive. After much persuasion Kannadhasan agreed verbally over the telephone to this government appointment which status was almost similar to that of a minister.

And the inevitable happened! That very evening at a public meeting Kannadhasan, as usual, started to verbally criticize MGR just like in the immediate past. This news was conveyed to MGR that night by one of his senior party cadres. MGR just shrugged it off with his usual signature smile. He told that Kannadhasan is one person who cannot be controlled just like that by offering tempting gains.

MGR's offer was reported in Kumudham (or was it Ananda Vikatan?) back in 1978 and the perks Kannadhasan will enjoy as the poet laureate. Even Kannadhasan has mentioned MGR's generosity in his own books adding that His persona is such that he never back stabs anyone. He is sincere and many critics like himself ((Kannadhasan) have actually benefitted by just being friends with him. He treated his foes as friends and not the other way around.

Even Vaali, in his weekly installment in Thuglak entitled 'Enakkul X- ray: MGR' did mention to the effect that MGR casually told him while traveling in the car about his contemplation to appoint Kannadhasan as the poet laureate. Vaali was with him from 1964 until the last although he did have some minor break-offs and differences with the former. Everyone thought that Vaali will be the chosen one but MGR appointed Kannadhasan instead. That is proof enough of how MGR cherished old-time relationships despite the occasional bitterness and enmity. He also knew of Kannadhasan's wit and wisdom and his contributions towards the Tamil literature which was the other reason. In short he recognized a person's talents and not his personal characteristics.

Of course, at that time, some tongues were wagging to the effect that MGR appointed Kannadhasan as the poet laureate so as to silence Kannadhasan's criticisms against him. My personal opinion is that Kannadhasan criticized Kalaignar Karunanidhi more than MGR. He actually regretted for bad-mouthing MGR as he was a true gentleman, never to retaliate unlike the other so-called friends. This is written from the bottom of his heart in his Vanavaasam or Manavaasam.

When we interviewed the late Ponnammal Aachi, first wife of Kaviarasu Kannadhasan way back in 1996 in Singapore at her youngest son's house she related as to how MGR defended the then on-going debate on the medical expenses incurred by Kannadhasan at the hospital in Chicago. The opposition led by Karunanidhi was playing to the gallery in the Tamil Nadu State Assembly as to why the State Government should foot the bill of an unelected representative and that too in the US where the costs were exorbitant. MGR stood his ground firmly till the last and said that the Government is obligated to defray the costs even though the hospitalisation was more than two months. This is because of his virtue of appointment as poet laurete. When Kannadhasan's lifeless body arrived from Chicago by air MGR was at the airport and thence at the house. The flight expenses were also borne by the government and of course Kannadhasan was given a state funeral and the procession led by MGR himself. MGR even went on board the hearse to arrange all those books by Kannadhasan as an after thought. Till to date there is no record of any cinema lyricist being given a state funeral which procession was led by a reigning Chief Minister. Kaviarasu Kannadhasan couldn't have dreamt even in his wildest dreams that he will be accorded such a VVIP treatment on his last journey and led by the man whom he once used to criticize. This incident is reminiscent of the song Naalu Perukku Nandri' (Sangey Muzhangu) by Kannadhasan for MGR but in actuality has been reversed to mean Kannadhasan is singing a gratitude song to MGR. Incidentally, this is the only song ever written by any poet as though a dead man is singing the song if gratitude.

That goes to show how magnanimous was MGR to his once severe critic, a personal friend and a business partner.

I will try and post whatever I can re-cap from time to time but in the meantime can Easwee please throw some light as to what really transpired at the Tamil Nadu State Assembly from July to October 1981 pertaining to Kannadhasan's medical issue in Chicago?

Hi Masanam, You have missed one pertinent point in regards to this immortal song 'vizhiye Kathai ezhuthu'. When MGR first went through the lyrics of this song he knew that it was Kannadhasan's and not Vaali's. He had the uncanny power to spot such instances in lyrics and dialogues as his command of the Tamil language is very high. Please also do not forget that he was a visionary and knew what will sell and reach out to the people. Even Kamalhassan has said this publicly in Malaysia once in an interview.

Sreedhar admitted that it was Kannadhasan's work and not Vaali's for which MGR admonished him. Sreedhar justified his unilateral action saying that it was done because of the animosity between MGR and him ((Kannadhasan) at that period of time. MGR, however, explained that it had nothing to do with one's professional work and he directed that Kannadhasaan be duly given the credit title. But alas, the records were already printed and it was too late to rectify it. However, in the film the name of Kannadhasan does appear in the title credits. Of course, this song was the most popular in the film for its lyrics, artistes and the unique slow motion picturisation.

That is how MGR respects another artiste for his contributions despite the personal animosity.,
