Tons of pages unread in the last several weeks, including Gopal's series.
I should try and catch up sometime. But one thing I quickly wanted to share (sorry if this was already discussed a few pages back and I missed it).
A few weeks back in Ananda Vikadan, Adoor Gopalakrishnan mentioned about two Sivaji films he liked in his college days (Dindikkal Gandhigram univ. apparently!)
Parasakthi - he mentioned being enamoured by the performance and the lines - and a complete 'breakaway from the mould' that the film was. He said he had many lines 'committed to memory'.
And another performance he singled out was VeerapANdiya Kattabomman.
I have not seen many of his interviews and only some of his films. And for that reason these comments from him came as a bit of a pleasant surprise.
As you may now, his films/sensibilities tend towards a highly understated, subtle pace of progression, performances and near-complete absence of dramatics of any sort. They mood and rhythm envelop you. For this reason he is - even unfairly - ridiculed as being inaccessible and artsy.
To some extent it can also be said that he is quite fastidious about how his films are meant to be and has some - dare I say rigid- view on mainstream aesthetics (folks like equanimus/kid_glove, who are more familiar with his works and interviews may correct me if my view is wrong).
Even in that interview he talks about not using stars as it undermines what he wants to be the 'feel of his films'.
One digression:Naseeruddin Shah, in another recent interview, actually faults these 'parallel cinema' folks for not being collaborative enough regarding actors - i.e. not giving the actors the space to create but being very rigid. It is an interesting point as these filmmakers are often intent on killing any traces of performance at all - thus making it that much difficult for many of us, who are used a degree of pronounced and observable theatricality - to appreciate the acting. But it is indeed a viewpoint to acknowledge - even if not agree - that when one 'observes' a performance to some extent it is a deviation from taking a scene/movie in as a whole and relegating actors to 'mere' people who populate the celluloid. Great filmmakers like Robert Bresson take the extreme route of never using professional actors, and removing any trace of expression/reaction at all - it can be a very odd experience to see and develop a taste for his films, given how we have experienced films/storytelling. But one has to experience how he makes us (the audience) internalize the tension, reactions, empathy even as the actors show no expression!
While Adoor is not quite Bresson, it is clear from his films where his partiality lies.
So, for such a filmmaker to appreciate Sivaji's performances, was actually quite delightfully interesting.
It shows the ability to appreciate an artist in the aesthetic context in which the performance is ensconced, even if that itself is very very different from the aesthetic that Adoor himself subscribes to.
