1983ம் ஆண்டு மே மாதம் 22ம் தேதி சென்னை நேரு விளையாட்டு அரங்கில், சென்னைக்கு கிருஷ்ணா நதி நீர் கொண்டு வரும் தெலுங்கு கங்கா திட்டத்தின் கீழ், அப்போதைய பிரதமர் இந்திரா காந்தி அவர்களின் முன்னிலையில் ஆந்திர அரசுக்கு தமிழக அரசின் முதல் தவணைத் தொகையாக 100 கோடி ரூபாய் வழங்கிய, வரலாற்று சிறப்பு மிக்க அற்புதமான நிகழ்ச்சியின் போது, இந்த அரிய புகைப்படம், எடுக்கப்பட்டது.

சென்னை மாநகரின் குடி தண்ணீர் தட்டுப்பாடு பெருமளவில் இத்திட்டம் மூலம் நீங்கியது.

நாட்டு மக்களின் வாட்டம் போக்கிட நாடு போற்றும் நமது நாயகன் எம். ஜி. ஆர். அவர்கள் தீட்டிய மாபெரும் திட்டங்களில் ஒன்று தான் இந்த தெலுங்கு கங்கா திட்டம் என்பது குறிப்பிடத் தக்கது.

The title of this film also impressed MGR so much so that he used it to write his weekly biography series in Ananda Vikatan around the same time when it was released in 1972.

This was also the film where Kamalhassan, who was an assistant to Dance Master Thangappan, choreographed the 'Ennama Chinna Ponnu' song. Many years later when MGR was the CM he said in a film felicitatory function (where Kamalhassan was amongst those present to be felicitated) that 'Kamalhassan ennai eppidi ellam aati padaithaar theriymua?. Avarin thiramaiyai andrey nan oondru kavinitheyn. Avarukku oru nalla ethir kaalam kaathukitturigutathu endru appothey enakku thondrittathu'. He was obviously referring to this song where Kamalhassan infused some difficult fast-paced novel movements which were shot on retakes. The end result was that the song became popular for its unique folklore style dance movements. The whole crowd frenzied with applause on MGR's wit and humour.

உண்மை ரவி சார். திரையில் திருமுகமும் மறைவில் மறுமுகமாய் விளங்கிய நடிகர்கள் மத்தியில், நிழல் மற்றும் நிஜத்தில் ஒருவராய் விளங்கியவர் ஒரு தாய் மக்களின் நாயகன் மக்கள் திலகம்தான். தான் சார்ந்திருக்கும் சமூகத்தைப் பற்றி துளிகூட அக்கறை இல்லாமல், பணம் தருகிறார்கள் எப்படியும் நடிக்கலாம் என்று நடித்தவர்களிடையே, தான் நடிக்கின்ற நடிப்பு சமூகத்தில் மாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்த வேண்டும், தீய பழக்க வழக்கங்களைக் களைய ஒரு பாடமாக இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று நினைத்ததோடு மட்டுமல்லாது அதை நடத்தியும் காட்டிய, நினைத்ததை முடித்தவர். திரையில் கூட மது அருந்தி நடிக்க அஞ்சிய மது அருந்தா மாமேதை. அதைத்தான் தன் திரைப்பட பாடலில் "நாம பாடுற பாட்டும் ஆடுற கூத்தும் படிப்பினைத் தந்தாகணும், நாட்டுக்கு படிப்பினைத் தந்தாகணும்" என்றார்
இந்த சமூக அக்கறைதான் இன்னும் இவர் பெயரை உலகில் மங்காமல் வைத்திருக்கிறது. இப்படி ஒரு சமூக அக்கறை இல்லாதவர்கள் இருந்தும் என்ன? இல்லாவிட்டால் என்ன?

Old rivalries don’t die!


One died almost 26 years ago and the other 12 years back. They were competitors and rivals when they were at the height of their careers. Now, the rivalry continues between their fans.

MGR, or M.G. Ramachandran, had an earlier start to his film career, at least a decade and a half before Sivaji made his mark on the silver screen. Between 1952, when Sivaji debuted in the runaway hit ‘Parasakthi’, and the early 1980s, when MGR acted in his last film, they were competitors and rivals, two powerful figures who dominated the Tamil film industry. They maintained a healthy respect for each other.

MGR had a successful political career, having broken away from the DMK to start his own party and riding to power in the Assembly elections in 1977. Till his death in 1987, MGR saw through many upheavals in his political career, never once losing power. He had carefully cultivated his image wooing womenfolk and the rural population, through roles that often portrayed him as the saviour of women and the downtrodden. Sivaji Ganesan, on the other hand, had a disastrous political career, his attempts at starting his own party having come a cropper. But as an actor, he was nonpareil.

Both had a huge fan following and both continue to have a fan following even now. There would be endless debates and arguments as to who was the better actor of the two. Sivaji was the “nadigar thilagam” and MGR “puratchi nadigar”. While Sivaji appealed to the class audience, MGR won over the masses. Sivaji’s screen roles were varied and he quite often lived the roles he portrayed.
