Buddies come together




It was an event Kamal Hassan’s fans were waiting for. The press conference was even postponed once, heightening the suspense but Kamal Hassan and his best buddy Ramesh Aravind did not fail their fans.
The duo recently announced that Kamal Hassan would be acting in a bilingual — Kannada and Tamil — directed by Ramesh Aravind to the delight of everyone at the event. Ramesh says that the two of them have been planning something on these lines for a long time.
Ramesh and Kamal were discovered by the same person and the two of them began their career around the same time.
Now, 20 years after their stint in the film industry, the two share a close bond, one that has been unshaken by the passage of time and change of circumstances.

Their on-screen combination worked well and their first film together in Tamil, Sathi Leelavathi was a big hit. They came together again in Panchathantiram and thereafter worked on several projects, including their Kannada film Rama Shama Bhama.

Their latest bilingual venture tentatively titled Uthama Villain, meaning good villain, is in the scripting stage and will be a family entertainer with loads of action sequences thrown in to keep the audience at the edge of their seats. A large portion of the film will be shot in Bangalore and it is touted to be a big budget project.

Kamal spent some quality time with Ramesh during his recent visit. He had lunch at Ramesh’s place considering that even the families are close.

“We have never taken our friendship for granted. There’s mutual respect for each other’s point of view and we’ve reached a stage where we don’t really feel bad or get irritated with the other’s observation or comment about something. That’s the level of understanding and comfort we share,” says Ramesh.

Ramesh doesn’t hesitate to add, “We have always had an open communication and that’s why I feel the two of us share a similar taste when it comes to a lot of things like books, music and movies.”

Even after all these years, Ramesh feels that Kamal has remained the same. “I
admire Kamal’s total commitment to cinema and he always goes an extra mile to give all his projects his best shot. I’ve watched all his movies and there’s a constant exchange of ideas between us, be it on our individual projects or otherwise,” notes Ramesh.

For the moment, Ramesh wishes to concentrate on his project with Kamal and states that he may not sign any project unless it is an exceptional one. His historical film, Basavanna is ready for release. “I’ve always wanted to play a historical character. With this project, that has been fulfilled,” he concludes.

Kamal Haasan will be honoured with the lifetime achievement award at the 15th Mumbai Film Festival that is to be held in Mumbai next month. The Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) festival will present this award to the filmmaker-actor for his immense contribution to cinematic excellence.

Shyam Benegal said, “He is a legend in every sense of the term. He is a writer, singer, director, lyricist and an actor par-excellence. We are extremely honored to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Kamal Haasan.”

Srinivasan Narayanan said, “My generation grew up watching Kamal Haasan’s films. His growth as an actor from K. Balachander’s Arangetram and Apoorva Raagangal to his award winning performances in Mani Ratnam’s Nayagan and Indian and the variety he brought in – from serious films to comedies to action films is phenomenal. He is straddling across all departments of filmmaking like a colossus.”

The 15th Mumbai Film Festival will take place from the 17th – 24, October 2013.

வயதான கலைஞர்களுக்கு தரும் விருது குறைந்த வயதுடைய எனக்கு எதற்கு என்று கூறி, ஒரு சர்வதேச விருதை திருப்பித் தரப் போகிறாராம் நடிகர் கமல்ஹாஸன். அது மும்பையில் நடக்கும் சர்வதேச திரைப்பட விழாவில் வழங்கப்பட உள்ள வாழ்நாள் சாதனையாளர் விருது. பொதுவாக இந்த விருது வயதான மூத்த நடிகர்களுக்குத்தான் இதுவரை வழங்கப்பட்டு வந்ததாம். இந்த முறை கமல் ஹாஸன் இந்திய சினிமாவுக்கு செய்த சாதனைகளுக்காக இந்த விருதினை அவருக்குத் தர முடிவு செய்து, அறிவித்துள்ளனர் விழாக் குழுவினர்.

இந்த விருதை ஏற்கலாமா வேண்டாமா என யோசனையில் உள்ளார் கமல். இது குறித்து கமல் கூறுகையில், "இந்த விருதை பெற எனக்கு தகுதி இருக்கிறதா இல்லையா என்று தெரியவில்லை. ஆனாலும் விருதுக்கு என்னை பரிந்துரை செய்ததற்காக மகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறேன். இது எனக்கு உற்சாகத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும். இன்னும் உழைக்க வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தைத் தூண்டி விடுவதாகவும் இருக்கும். அதே நேரம் வயதான நடிகர்களுக்கு கொடுக்கும் இந்த விருதை வயது குறைந்த இந்தக் கமலஹாசனுக்கு கொடுக்கலாமா என்று பேசுபவர்களுக்கு நான் ஒரு விஷயத்தை சொல்லிக் கொள்ள விரும்புகிறேன். நீங்கள் கொஞ்சம் பொறுத்திருங்கள்.... இந்த விருதை வேண்டாம் என்று மறுக்கவும் வேறு வயதான நடிகர்களுக்கு கொடுங்கள் என்று சிபாரிசு செய்யவும் நான் யோசித்துக் கொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறேன். சினிமாவில் உதவி நடன இயக்குனராக பணியாற்றியதில் இருந்து நிறைய கற்றுக் கொண்டு வருகிறேன். அந்த வகையில் இப்போதும் நான் மாணவன்தான். விரைவில் புதிய இந்திப் படங்களில் நடிக்கத் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளேன்," என்றார்.
