Please note i have no interest in comparison's . But this is a public forum and anybody can make a statement like what you do. But i find in this thread rankings being given by individuals for musicians / singers which pave the way for such comparison's. Every body has their own likings and dislikes . Their are fans of singers /musicians of various types in the forum and using words like Kezhavi, etc, to ascertain ones view point is not in good taste et all.

It is not my word.Nothing on appearance or age.It is About nature of voice ,exact words of my friends. How can I avoid quoting the actual words told by my friends? Without knowing the facts,how can you comment ,people of 80s preferred Janaki? What basis?She was given more chance by IR whimsically. All of us anyday preferred to hear his great music rendered by Suseela,Uma Ramanan,Chitra or Sujatha. This is precisely ,the opinion of all the people around me during that time.

Kumari Kamala Dancing in the Documentary "Bharata Natyam" (1954)

I'm so excited about this discovery that I feel like shouting from the rooftops that I have found footage of non-film Bharatanatyam by Kamala in the 1954 Indian Films Division 12-minute documentary Bharata Natyam directed by Jagat Murari! She is the featured dancer that demonstrates the characteristics of Bharatanatyam (accompanied by a boring English voiceover) such as styles of gaits, hand gestures, head and neck movements, footwork, and then demonstrations of short segments of the various pieces of a Bharatnatyam concert (Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Shabdam, Varnam, Padam, Tillana). There is a slight jerkiness at times that I address at the end of this post. Here it is, the video featuring the illustrious Kamala also known as Baby Kamala/Kumari Kamala/Kamala Lakshman/Kamala Lakshminarayanan/etc!

Isn't it wonderful? What a treat to get to see Kamala dance and perform in some ways that we would never get to see in her film dances; not only isolated movements of specific body parts but also how she performs specific common Bharatanatyam pieces such as the Alarippu without all the editing and shifting angles of film dances. Incredible!

I first learned of the video while re-reading through the excellent articles about Kamala from Sruti magazine posted at Kamala's dance school website. Reading through all the detailed descriptions of Kamala's excellence in the Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam made me feel sad that I would probably never get to see a video of her "pure" Bharatanatyam outside of films and check it out for myself. One of the articles discussed some factors behind the decline in Kamala's popularity and the lack of interest in documentaries about her during her later prime years and then noted:
“The Films Division of the Government of India had taken a short black and white film on Kamala’s dance, way back in the fifties. Within a duration of about 25 minutes the film covered all the items from alarippu to tillana, more as a documentary on dance and dance techniques than on the dancer. By the seventies Kamala had scaled new heights in the art and was in peak form. A film done with sensitivity to the art and the artist at that time would have been invaluable to the generations to come.”
Since 2012 has been the year of dance discoveries and unearthings on this blog, I thought I'd take a stab at seeing if I could find this fifties documentary somewhere online. As I looked at the "Search Videos" section of the Indian Films Division Website and navigated to the "Indian classical series" section, I saw a listing for "Bharat Natyam." Could it be? As the video began I thought "naw.. it's in color and the release date says 1980. Bummer." AND THEN...




UNBELIEVABLE! This treasure has been languishing on the internets virtually unfindable by the lack of Kamala-related keywords! And it was certainly not filmed in 1980; I'm going to believe the British Film Institute who dates the film at 1954 which better matches the Sruti description above.

Paying close attention to how Kamala moves has been fascinating. The "bani" or style of Bharatanatyam that she trained in and became iconic of was Vazhuvoor--so named after her guru Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai. The Sruti article "Flag-Carrier of the Vazhuvoor Bani" (Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, Page 4) explains the style is notable for its "fluid grace, eschewal of angularities, brisk tempo, intrinsically musical sollukattu-s [vocal rhythmic syllables]...emphasis on an extraordinary suppleness of body and limbs and for its use of sculpturesque poses."

These characteristics are evident while watching Kamala in the documentary. She differs from other Bharatanatyam performers I've seen (especially ones from the crisp Kalakshetra style) in how the movements blend into one another, the rounded grace instead of sharp and jerky postures, how far she reaches into movements, and just how light and "quick on the feet" she moves. She makes it look so effortless! And I adore her natural and inviting smile.



There are a few times in the video where she leaps and propels herself forward, a movement that I am mesmerized by. It reminds me of this arresting image and tribute to her in Sruti magazine:



So what a find eh! I've uploaded the video above to YouTube to get it tagged and identified so others can enjoy this bit of history! Unfortunately, the source file on the Films Division website is really small and in one of the crappiest video formats (.wmv) which is probably why there is some jerking and hesitating, especially near the beginning. To make things worse, YouTube stretches the tiny video to fit the player so the quality is even more blocky than the original. Watching it here on this post is actually better because it reduces the size and resolution a bit. Maybe someday I'll find a better copy with the kind of quality the recording of Kamala deserves!

பாலயோகினி, ஜகதலப்பிரதாபன், கொஞ்சும் சலங்கை, காத்தவராயன், பக்தமீரா, ஸ்ரீவள்ளி, நாம் இருவர், வீரக்கனல், வேதாள உலகம், குல தெய்வம், பார்த்திபன் கனவு, சிவகங்கைச் சீமை, சிவகாமி, பராசக்தி, பாவை விளக்கு போன்ற 80க்கும் மேற்பட்ட தமிழ்த் திரைப்படங்களிலும், காஞ்சனா, கிஸ்மத், ஷாஜி, ராம்ராஜ்யா போன்ற இந்திப் படங்களிலும் நடித்து திரைத்துறையில் கொடிகட்டிப் பறந்தவர் நாட்டியத்தாரகையும், நடிகையுமான குமாரி கமலா.

திரையுலகில் புகழ் உச்சியில் இருக்கும்போதே 1964-ல் இராணுவ வீரர் மேஜர் லெக்ஷ்மி நாராயணன் என்பவரைத் திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டு மெதுவாக திரையுலகை விட்டு விலகி குடும்ப வாழ்க்கையில் ஈடுபட ஆரம்பித்தார். 1980-ல் அமெரிக்காவில் உள்ள குயின்ஸ் என்ற இடத்தில் குடியேறி அங்கே “ஸ்ரீபரதகலாலயா’ என்கிற நாட்டியப் பள்ளி’ ஒன்றை ஆரம்பித்து ஏராளமானவர்களுக்கு பரதக் கலையைக் கற்றுக் கொடுக்க ஆரம்பித்தார். 1983-ல் கணவர் இறந்த பிறகு தன் மகனோடு அமெரிக்காவில் உள்ள நியூயார்க்கில் வசித்து வருகிறார்.

சமீபத்தில் தமிழ்நாட்டிற்கு வந்திருந்த குமாரி கமலாவை சந்தித்துப் பேசும் இனிய சந்தர்ப்பம் கிடைத்தது. அப்போது… அவரிடம்… பேசியதிலிருந்து…

எனக்கு சொந்த ஊர் மாயவரம் அதாவது மயிலாடுதுறை. ஆரம்ப காலத்தில் எங்க அப்பா ராமமூர்த்தி ஐயர் ஈரானில் துணி ஃபேக்டரியில் வேலை பார்த்தார். பிறகு பம்பாயில் சசூன் மில்லில் வேலை பார்த்தார். எங்க அம்மா ராஜம்மாள் என்னுடைய இரண்டு வயதில் என்னை கதக் நடனம் கற்க வைத்தார். பம்பாயிலிருந்த ரஞ்சித் மூவிடோன் கம்பெனியில் மாதச் சம்பளத்தில் என்னை குழந்தை ஆர்ட்டிஸ்டாக சேர்த்துவிட்டார். அவர்கள் எடுக்கும் படங்களிளெல்லாம் நடிப்பேன். ராம ராஜ்யா, கிஸ்மத், விஷ்கன்யா, ஷாஜி, கந்தன், தத்புரி போன்ற இந்திப் படங்களில் நடித்தேன்.

பேபி கமலா… குமாரி கமலாவாக மாறி இன்று வரையில் ரசிகர்கள் மத்தியில் அதே பெயரில் அழைக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறேன். நான் சிறு வயதில் கஷ்டப்பட்டு இரவு பகலாக உழைத்தது போல என் அம்மாவும் என் சகோதரிகள் ராதா, வசந்தியும் என் வளர்ச்சிக்காக சரிசமமாக உழைத்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

காட்டுமன்னார்கோவில் முத்துக்குமாரப் பிள்ளை அவர்களிடம் (மும்பையிலிருந்து தமிழ்நாட்டிற்கு வந்ததும் சிறு வயதிலேயே) முறைப்படி பரதம் கற்றுக் கொண்டதும் சொந்த ஊரான மாயவரத்தில் அரங்கேற்றம் நடத்தினார்கள் என் பெற்றோர்.

கதக் நடனமும், பரதமும்தான் என் திரையுலக வளர்ச்சிக்கு பெரிதும் கை கொடுத்தது. எனக்கு நன்கு விவரம் தெரிந்த காலகட்டத்தில் சென்னைக்குக் குடி வந்தோம். இங்கே வழுவூர் ராமையா பிள்ளையிடம் சேர்ந்து அவரை குருவாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு அவரோடு பரத நாட்டிய நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நிறைய செய்தேன். மயிலை ஆர்.ஆர். சபாவில் என் பரத நாட்டிய நிகழ்ச்சியைப் பார்த்த ஏவி.எம். செட்டியார் டைரக்டர் ஸ்ரீராமுலு நாயுடு அவர்களிடம் என்னைப் புகழ்ந்து கூற அவர் என்னை பி.யூ. சின்னப்பா நடித்த “ஜகதலப் பிரதாபன்’ படத்தில் ஸ்நேக் டான்ஸ் என்று சொல்லப்படுகிற பாம்பு நடனத்தை எனக்காகப் படத்தில் சேர்த்து என்னை ஆட வைத்தார். அந்த டான்ஸ் ரொம்பவும் பாப்புலர் ஆனது. திரையுலகில் ஒவ்வொரு தயாரிப்பாளரும் தங்களுடைய படத்தில் ஏதோ ஒரு வகையில் என் டான்ஸ் இருக்கும்படி செய்தார்கள்.

“நாம் இருவர்’ படத்தில் ஏவிஎம் செட்டியார் “ஆடுவோமே பள்ளு பாடுவோமே’ என்ற பாட்டை பதிவு செய்யும்போதே குமாரி கமலாதான் இந்தப் பாட்டிற்கு ஆட வேண்டும் என்று எல்லோரிடமும் சொல்லிவிட்டாராம். இப்போது எவ்வளவோ டெக்னாலஜி, கம்ப்யூட்டர் கிராஃபிக்ஸ், டிஜிட்டல் என்று என்னென்னவோ வந்துவிட்டது. இதெல்லாம் இல்லாத காலகட்டத்தில் “நாம் இருவர்’ படத்தில் என்னை டூயல் ரோலில் (இரட்டை வேடத்தில்)

அந்தப் பாட்டிற்கு ஆட வைத்து படமெடுத்து மாபெரும் சாதனை செய்தார். அதை இப்போது நினைத்தாலும் வியப்பாக இருக்கிறது. ஏவிஎம்மின் “பராசக்தி’ படத்தில் ஓ… ரசிக்கும் சீமானே … என்ற பாட்டும் அந்தப் பாட்டிற்கு என் டான்சும் அந்தக் காலத்தில் மட்டுமல்ல இப்போதும் பிரபலம்தான். இதை நான் பெருமையாகவே சொல்லிக் கொள்வேன்.

கொஞ்சும் சலங்கை படத்தில் நானும் நடிகை குசலகுமாரியும் ஒரு போட்டி டான்ஸ் ஆடுவோம். நாட்டியம் ஆடிக் கொண்டே நான் சிங்கம் படமும், குசலகுமாரி மயில் படமும் போடுவோம். அந்தப் பாட்டை இப்போது அடிக்கடி டி.வி.யில் போடுகிறார்கள். அதைப் பார்த்த இந்தக் காலத்துக் குழந்தைகள் பலர் என்னிடம் வியப்பாகவும், பிரமிப்பாகவும் கூறுகிறார்கள்.

சிவாஜி அவர்களோடு நடிக்கும்போது அவர் என் டான்சை வியந்து பேசுவார். நான் அவர் நடிப்பை வியந்து பேசுவேன். அவரோடு பயந்து கொண்டே நடிப்பேன். என்னை தைரியப்படுத்தி எனக்கு அழகாக நடிப்புச் சொல்லிக் கொடுப்பார் சிவாஜி.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அவர்கள் தன்னுடைய “நாடோடி மன்னன்’ படத்தில் நடிக்க எனக்கு வாய்ப்புக் கொடுத்தார். ஆனால் அப்போது நான் வேறு சில படங்களில் பிசியாக இருந்ததால் அந்த அருமையான வாய்ப்பை இழந்தேன். எம்.ஜி.ஆரோடு நடிக்கவில்லையே என்ற வருத்தம் இன்றும் எனக்கு உண்டு.

நாட்டியம், நடிப்பு என்று படங்களில் பிசியாக இருந்தாலும் பரதநாட்டிய நிகழ்ச்சிகளை விடாமல் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தேன். ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டியத்திலும், ஒவ்வொரு விதமான புதுமை புரிந்து பல சாதனைகளை அதில் செய்தேன்’ என்று பேசிக் கொண்டே வந்த குமாரி கமலாவிடம் “அந்தக் காலத்தில் உங்கள் நாட்டியத்திலும், உங்கள் அழகிலும் மயங்கி பலர் உங்களை காதலித்திருப்பார்கள், திருமணம் செய்து கொள்ள விருப்பப்பட்டிருப்பார்கள். இதையெல்லாம் அப்போது எப்படி சமாளித்தீர்கள் என்று ஒரு கேள்வியைக் கேட்டோம். வெட்கம் கலந்த புன்னகையுடன் குமாரி கமலா நம்மிடம் “”நீங்க எங்கிட்டே இப்போ கேட்ட சமாச்சாரங்கள் எல்லாம் அந்தக் காலத்தில் நடந்தது. ஆனால் என் வேலையும், என் மனதும் கெடாமல் எனக்கு வேலியாக இருந்து… பாதுகாப்பாக இருந்து.. அப்படிப்பட்ட நபர்களிடமிருந்து என்னைக் காப்பாற்றியவர் என்னுடைய அம்மாதான்’ என்றார்.

ஸ்ரீதேவி நடித்த “தெய்வத் திருமணம்’ ஜெயசித்ரா நடித்த “வருவான் வடிவேலன்’ போன்ற சில படங்களுக்கு டான்ஸ் மாஸ்டராக இருந்து பாடல்களுக்கு பரத நாட்டியம் கம்போஸ் செய்திருக்கிறேன்.

எல்லா மொழிப் படங்களையும் நான் டி.வி.டியில் அமெரிக்காவில் பார்த்து விடுவேன். டான்ஸ், பிரேக் டான்ஸ் என்ற பெயரில் வலிப்பு வந்த மாதிரி ஆடுகிறார்கள். கலாச்சாரத்தையே குட்டிச்சுவராக்குகிறார்கள். இப்போது வருகிற பாட்டு, டான்ஸ் எதையுமே பார்க்க முடியல. நாங்கள் வெளிநாட்டிற்குச் சென்று நம் இந்தியக் கலாச்சாரத்தையும், தமிழ் பண்பாட்டையும், எல்லா தரப்பினர்களும் மதித்து பாராட்டும் வகையில் நாட்டியங்கள் மூலமாக இராமாயணம், மகாபாரதம், சிவபுராணம், கந்தபுராணம் என்று எல்லாவற்றையும் பல புதுமைகள் கலந்து கம்போஸ் செய்து அயல்நாட்டவர்களையும், நம்நாட்டவர்களையும் வியக்க வைத்து, யோசிக்க வைத்து வருகிறோம். இதை நம் திரையுலகினர்கள் மனதிற்கொண்டு செயல்பட்டால் மிகவும் நல்லது’ என்று கூறிய குமாரி கமலா அவர்கள் “நடிகர்களில் கமல், சூரியா, மாதவனையும் நடிகைகளில் ஜோதிகா, சிம்ரன், ரம்யா கிருஷ்ணன் ஆகியோர்களின் நடிப்பும் அழகும் எனக்கு ரொம்ப ரொம்ப பிடிக்கும்’ என்றார்.

திருமணம் ஆன பிறகும் உங்களை எல்லோரும் இன்றுவரை “குமாரி’ கமலா என்றே அழைக்கிறார்களே என்று கேட்டதற்கு… கமலா என்றோ, திருமதி கமலா என்றோ, கமலா லெஷ்மி நாராயணன் என்றோ கூறினால் “டக்’கென்று யாருக்கும் புரிவதில்லை. குமாரி கமலா என்றால் உடனே புரிகிறது. அதனால்தான் “குமாரி’யை நானும் விடுவதாக இல்லை. ரசிகர்களும் விடுவதாக இல்லை என்றார் சிரித்துக் கொண்டே.

அமெரிக்காவில் தான் நடத்தி வரும் பரத கலாலயா நாட்டியப் பள்ளி தன்னுடைய வீட்டிலிருந்து சுமார் 300 கிலோ மீட்டர் தூரம் இருக்கிறதாம். பள்ளியில் பரதம் சொல்லிக் கொடுப்பதற்காக வாரத்தில் இரண்டு, மூன்று நாட்கள் தானே காரை ஓட்டிக் கொண்டு செல்வாராம். இன்று வரையில் அதை செய்து கொண்டிருப்பதாகக் கூறியபோது இந்த 78 வயதிலும் இவர் குமாரியாகவே இருப்பதன் காரணம் புரிந்து வியப்பும், ஆச்சரியமும் நமக்கு மேலோங்கி நின்றது. வருடத்திற்கு ஒரு முறை நம் தமிழ்நாட்டிற்கு வந்து சொந்த பந்தங்களைப் பார்த்து மகிழ்ந்து, எல்லா கோவில்களுக்கும் சென்று வருவதை வாடிக்கையாக வைத்திருக்கும் குமாரி கமலா அவர்கள் பல்லாண்டு காலம் வாழவும் அவர் கலைச் சேவை தொடரவும் வாழ்த்துவோம்!
