மக்கள் கவிஞர் பட்டுக்கோட்டையாரின் நினைவுநாள் இன்று. 1959ம் வருடம் இதே நாளில் தான் தலைவரையும், தமிழக மக்களையும் மீளாத்துயரத்தில் ஆழ்த்திவிட்டு தனது இளம் வயதிலேயே (29) அண்ணார் இவ்வுலகை விட்டு மறைந்தார். ஆனால் அவர் தமிழுக்கு ஆற்றியுள்ள தொண்டும், பகுத்தறிவு சிந்தனையைத் தூண்டும் பாடல்களும் இவ்வுலகம் உள்ளளவும் நம் நினைவை விட்டு மறையாது. தலைவர் அவர் மீது வைத்திருந்த அன்பும், அண்ணார் தலைவர் மீது கொண்டிருந்த மரியாதையும் அனைவரும் அறிந்ததே. அவரின் அகால மறைவு தமிழ்ச் சமுதாயத்திற்கும் திரைப்படத் துறைக்கும் (குறிப்பாக தலைவரின் திரை வாழ்க்கைக்கு மட்டுமல்ல; அரசியல் வாழ்க்கைக்கும் இணைந்தே) போன நூற்றாண்டில் நேர்நத மிகப்பெரிய கொடுமையென்று கூறினால் அது மிகையில்லை.

அண்ணாரின் நினைவைப் போற்றுவோம். தலைவரின் வழி நடப்போம்.

The year 1948 saw the desperate attempts of M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar to make a comeback after his sad sojourn in prison for some 30 traumatic months following the sensational Lakshmikantham murder case. As soon as he came out of prison, he took refuge in religion, started visiting temples and avoided his friends and favourite haunts. He launched a film project in Poona at the famous Prabhat Studio, appropriately titled Raja Mukthi (The Salvation of Raja (Thyagaraja)!). He called his friend Raja Chandrasekhar to direct the movie. Bhanumathi and V. N. Janaki were cast in the lead. M. G. Ramachandran, yet to hit big time, did a supporting role.

Papanasam Sivan penned the lyrics, while Alathur Subramaniam (of the famous Alathur Brothers) gave ‘sangeetha sikshai’ and C. R. Subbaraman did the orchestration. Puthumai Pitthan, one of the finest writers, worked on the script until premature death took him away. M. L. Vasanthakumari lent her singing voice to V. N. Janaki, and rendered duets with Bhagavathar.

After that phenomenal box-office record-smasher, Haridas (1944), there had been no Bhagavathar movie and consequently expectations ran high about Raja Mukthi and its release was eagerly awaited. Any Bhagavathar movie took long even in the best of times and now it was worse. As the project dragged on, the air was rife with all kinds of rumours — Bhagavathar has lost his voice; he has gone bald; the legendary “Bhagavathar crop” has vanished.

A familiar tale of kings at loggerheads, a pregnant queen (Janaki) being abandoned, a young woman (Bhanumathi) trying to seduce the hero (MKT) with an eye on the throne… all these elements were spun into the story by Raja Chandrasekhar.

MGR played the warring king. Bhanumathi who made a splash in the Telugu film Swargaseema was brought into Tamil cinema and this was her second film as vamp. Like in any Bhagavathar film, in this too, music dominated. The gramophone discs were released well in advance and songs such as ‘Unnaiyallal Oru Thurumbu...’ (MKT, raga Saramathi) became popular. However, when the film was released, it failed miserably and Bhagavathar broke under its shattering impact. It couldn’t revive his old magic. P. S. Veerappa, later noted screen villain and producer (Alayamani), made his debut in this movie. There was an on-screen nagaswaram interlude by the legend T. N. Rajaratnam Pillai but few remember it.

Remembered for: As an attempt by MKT to resurrect his film career but regrettably it did not happen...

"தனியுடமை கொடுமைகள் தீர தொண்டு செய்யடா, தானா எல்லாம் மாறும் என்பது பழைய பொய்யடா..." என்றும், "திருடனாய் பார்த்து திருந்தா விட்டால் திருட்டை ஒழிக்க முடியாது" எனவும், "ஆளும் வளரணும் அறிவும் வளரணும் அதுதாண்டா வளர்ச்சி" போன்ற பெ*ரிய தத்துவங்களை எளிமையாக திரைப்பாடல்களில் இடம்பெற வைத்தவர் பட்டுக்கோட்டையார். தேவையில்லா உவமை, உவமானங்களைத் தேடி அவர் போனதில்லை.

பட்டுக்கோட்டையார் என செல்லமாக அழைக்கப்பட்ட பட்டுக்கோட்டை கல்யாண சுந்தரம் இந்த உலகில் வாழ்ந்தது மொத்தம் 29 வருடங்கள்தான் ஆனால் இந்த குறுகிய காலத்தில் அவர் எழுதிச் சேர்த்த கவிதைச் செல்வங்கள் நிறைய.
