Motifs in MGR movies
A dictionary on cinematic terms, define a motif as “a recurrent word, phrase, situation, object or idea.” There are many motifs in MGR movies. One prominent motif is a riding scene with an educational (or philosophical) song. The hero character rides a bullock cart or a small scale chariot, while lip-singing this enthralling song. Occasionally, either the heroine or a side-kick (comedian) or an actor in a minor role is nearby. Here are some selected examples.
‘Manusanai manusan saapiduraandhi’ – in Thaaiku Pin Thaaram (Wife after the Mother 1956)
‘Summa irunda nilathai koththi’ – in Nadodi Mannan (The Vagabond King 1958)
‘Uzhaipathila Uzhaipai peruvathila’ – in Nadodi Mannan (The Vagabond King 1958)
‘Achcham enpathu madamaiyada’ – in Mannathi Mannan (King of Kings 1960)
‘Paarappa Palaniappa Pattanamam Pattanamam’ – in Periya Idathu Penn (High Society Woman, 1963)
‘Nenjam undu Nermai undu Oodu raja’ – in En Annan (My Elder Brother 1970)
It has been stated that MGR adopted this strategy of having an educational song, after the success ofMalai Kallan (1954) movie, in which he lip synched a time-less song ‘Ethanai Kaalam Thaan Emaruvar intha Naatile?’ (How long these guys will be cheating us?). For this song, the heroine (P. Bhanumathi, 1925-2005) was riding a horse, while MGR character was walking nearby holding the horse rein. Even though the lyricist, the song arranger (aka music director) and the singer were different individuals, in his fans minds, the song has become entrenched as an arch-typical MGR song, for the sole reason that MGR’s imprint is seen there. Almost all such songs in 1950s, and 1960s were sung by T.M. Soundararajan.
Nadodi Mannan (The Vagabond King) was MGR’s grand project of 1956-57, and it was released on August 22, 1958. In addition to acting in double roles, MGR produced and directed it under his newly formed company banner, Em.Gee.Yar Pictures. In these movie, there were two educational songs with a riding scene. One was ‘Summa kidandha nilaththai koththi sombalillamal yer nadathi’ (Digging an unkempt soil and ploughing it earnestly) sung by T.M. Soundararajan and written by Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, a Communist Party sympathizer. For this song, MGR was riding a bullock cart with heroine P. Bhanumathi. A second song, ‘Uzhaipathila Uzhaipai peruvathila’ (Is their pleasure in labor or in demanding labor) was sung by Sirkali Govindarajan. For this song, written by poet A. Lakshmanadas, MGR was riding a small scale chariot with an actor in a minor role. In addition, MGR also added a still magical educational song Thoongathe thambi thoongathe (Do not idle younger brother and don’t be a listless fellow), sung by T.M. Soundararajan and written by Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram.
Other motifs in MGR’s movies include rising sun symbol of DMK party (until he was expelled from the party in 1972), frequent use of the word Anna (that literally means ‘elder brother’in Tamil, but used as an euphemism to C.N. Annadurai, the founder leader of DMK), and the word Thai (which literally means ‘mother’) in many of his movie titles.

March 2014 when digital version of Ayirathil Oruvan was released Urimaikural editor B.S.Raj expressed his wish that I have to write an article not less than 15 pages to be published in the special edition which was slated to be released during the 50th day function, but I was met with an accident and my leg was broken. With the leg pain I typed the article and gave to Mr.B.S.Raj during 1st week of April without any consideration for my writing.

But the special edition publication was postponed and finally the book was released during the 175th day function held on September 1st 2014 in Kamaraj Arangam. From page 2nd to page 20th is my article which is now used by Dina Ithaz. My name and as well MGR blog address srimgr.com, due credit was given by B.S.Raj in that book.

I was not satisfied with my writing (since it is first time in Tamil) but BSR said it is ok. As I had given the article to BSR and it is been published, did the writer Mr.Siranjivi Anish get any consent from the Editor of Urimaikural to publish this in his newspaper?

Anyhow my simple writing has been published in a daily.

நடிகர் திலகம் திரியில் எவ்வளவு தரம் தாழ்த்தினாலும், தாக்கி பேசினாலும் நாகரிகம் கருதி நாங்கள் வருவதில்லை. திரு. சிவா அவர்களே என்னாச்சு உங்களுக்கு மக்கள் திலகம் திரியில் வந்து தேவையில்லாமல் விமர்சனம் செய்யாதீர்கள். இது தவறு. திருத்திகொள்ளுங்கள். திரையுலகில் அன்றும் இன்றும் என்றும் வசூல் மன்னர் என்பது உலகிற்கே தெரியும். வெளியிடப்பட்ட நாள் முதல் இதய தெய்வத்தின் அனைத்து படங்களுமே இடைவெளி இல்லாமல் வசூல் சாதனை புரிந்துகொண்டிருப்பது நாடறிந்தது. இன்றைக்கும் உலகின் பல இடங்களிலும் தலைவரின் திரைக்காவியம் திரையிடப்பட்டுக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. .. ஒரு படமல்ல..தலைவரின் நிறைய படங்கள் இன்றளவும் சாதனை புரிந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது. எனவே தேவையில்லாத இந்த பதிவை நீக்கவேண்டும் என்று தங்களைக் கேட்டுகொள்கிறேன்.

அவசர அலுவல் காரணமாக சகோதரர் திரு. கலைவேந்தன் அவர்கள் கலந்து கொள்ள முடியமால் போனது. இதனை அவர் என்னிடம் கூறி, வருத்தப்பட்டார்.
