How was the first show allparai in Dharmapuri? Why I am asking this question is, I got an impression that Dharmapuri is most likely MGR fort, I may be wrong. I could remember one of friend told that Babu and Rikhshakaran released together and there were lots of rivalry.

ராகவேந்தர் சார் சொன்னதுபோல, 1970 அக்டோபர் 1 அன்று நடைபெற்ற மாபெரும் மாநாட்டில், தாங்கள் இப்போது பதிப்பித்து வரும் 'சிவாஜி ரசிகன்' முதல் மலர் சிலநூறு பதிவுகளே வெளியிடப்பட்டன. பெரும்பாலோருக்குக் கிடைக்கவில்லை. நானும் கூட இன்னொருவரிடம் இரவல் வாங்கித்தான் பார்த்து மகிழ்ந்தேன். ('மாலைக்குள் திருப்பித்தர வேண்டும்' என்ற நிபந்தனையுடன் கொடுத்தார். தவறிப்போய்விடுமோ என்ற பயம் அவருக்கு).

நாற்பதாண்டுகளுக்குப்பின் அதே பொக்கிஷப்பதிவுகளை லட்சக்கணக்கானோர் கைகளில் கொண்டு சேர்க்க மனித உருவில் ஒரு பூதம் வரப்போகிறதென்று அப்போது யாரும் அறிந்திருக்கவில்லை. இதற்கெல்லாம் உங்களுக்கு எப்படி நன்றி சொல்வதென்று தெரியவில்லை. அதற்கெல்லாம் அப்பாற்பட்டவராக உயர்ந்துவிட்டீர்கள்.

இருப்பினும் பாராட்டுவதும், நன்றி தெரிவிப்பதும் எங்கள் கடமை.

Yes, the ultimate when it comes to the depiction of the innocent on screen that went on to become a template.

Yes. The thing is, he works us to such an emotion high with his demeanor that after a point every single moment is touching.
I guess it is pretty much like what they say about stand up comedy. It is the ice-breaking and getting the first laughs that is the problem. But once you've got the audience going you every joke is going to get a laugh.

Similarly here, Sivaji pierces through my cynicism and thereafter I am totally captivated. Every line, every scene works. The scene where he learns Sundari Bai's son has worked overtime to redeem the jewel he stole and pawned, all he says is: "என் மாமா வீட்டு பிள்ளைங்க, யாருமே கெட்டவங்க இல்லை". Regard for the family dominates every fibre of his being. Extremely moving. Look at the time when he says that, it is when Asokan and Muthuraman are still at their worst behaviour.


When asked about the money for spending on the tenth day ceremony: உன் பணம் தானே அத்த...நீ தானே நகை பண்ணி கொடுத்தே, அதைத் தான் வித்தேன்....மாமாவுக்கு இல்லாம பின்ன இந்த அம்மா போட்டு மினுக்குறதுக்கா?. It is uncharitable of him to talk about his wife - who is the most undemanding person - in such a manner. But even she knows that he is saying that out of love for RangaRao. That it seems obvious to him, that that is the course of action, is moving in itself. And his expression heightens the emotions. It is not even selflessness, in the normal meaning of putting others before oneself. But truly breathing meaning to the word selflessness in not even being aware of oneself as a separate entity, and relegating one's interest being a natural, unconscious response.

The scene where he meets SundariBai gathering wood when he running to meet the sAmiyAr is just fantastic. "உனக்கு அறிவு இருக்கா" he rails at her for not coming to his home directly. Her wrongs do not even register with him. This is not even a நன்னயம் செய்து விடல் or a "they know not what they are doing", this is just being a much larger person than anyone around him. In the end also, when Sowcar Janaki asking him about his bleeding head, he says dismissively: "இந்தப்பய அடிச்சுட்டாம்....போறான் விடு"

His posture with when he talks to the piLLaiyAr, is just earnestness personified. When the sAmiyAr asks him to bathe, in one shot he plunges into the pond and hastily crawls back out to her.

Today while watching was able to enjoy numerous scenes where the nuances are superbly brought out by NT with able support from SVR.

SVR is terrific. Their scenes together are simply on a different level. Such ease of performance.
அடிக்கடி தான் நினைச்சிக்கிறீங்களா...எனக்கு சதா உங்க நினைப்பு தான்.

He describes his work as 'nothing too difficult' and elaborates on his salary: எட்டு மணிநேரம் வேலை பார்த்தா த்ரீ ருபீஸ்...ஓவர்டைம் பார்த்தா ட்டூ ருபீஸ்...அகமொத்தம் ஃபைவ் ருபீஸ்.The way he pronounces the 'rubees' has a childishness that cannot be explained, nor can one imagine it being taught. Only experienced. So much so that the 'உள்ளதைச் சொல்வேன், சொன்னதைச் செய்வேன், வேறொன்றும் தெரியாது' is rendered an unnecesaary elaboration - when after all he exudes that in every action, every word, intonation.


When he asks him why he bought him cigarettes and didn't buy his wife anything, he says

"ஓ..இப்படி (தலையை சுத்தி மூக்கைத் தொடுவார்)...இப்படி கேக்குறீங்களாக்கும். ஏண்டா வந்தேங்கறதை....ஏண்டா சிகரெட் வாங்கிட்டு வந்தேன்னு"

In their whole exchange, their are parts where his mumbling is even unintelligible, still they are communicating. Their is a free flow of emotions on the surface and simultaneously a torrent of emotional running deeper - which these two fantastic actors make it so evident to us, the audience. We think we have perceived a miscommunication. That we 'understand' SVR's concerns, but the simple Rangan is not getting it. But at the same time we are conscious that they share a communication whose depth is just beyond what we can perceive. A bond so strong, that while we are moved, we perhaps cannot entirely dismiss a jealousy we feel for their bond.

Whenever I watch this movie,used to be reminded of the Kumudam review which had signed off the review like this. ஒரு நாள் சிவாஜி பெயர் கூட மறைந்து போகலாம் ஆனால் ரங்கனின் பெயர் என்றும் மறைந்து போகாது.

In the end he says, with a bleeding head: ஏண்டா நான் திருடன்னு நினைச்சு தானேடா அடிச்சீங்க....இப்பொ நான் நல்லவன்னு தெரிஞ்சதும் ஏண்டா வீட்டை விட்டு போறேன்றீங்க?

The logic is astounding, isn't it? Sounds like wise words that tumble out of a child's mouth and stun us adults, who considered ourselves the child's intellectual superiors all along.

Of course they will leave. That is their natural reaction (and so too goads Sundaribai). But the way Rangan puts it, he points out that what they are abandoning is 'goodness itself'. That is what he regards the house to be. An embodiment of goodness. Why on earth, will people who seek good, leave it? Even in their misconception of taking him to be a thief, he can see the goodness of their thinking that ' a thief deserves to be beaten'. Jaw dropping how he is able to see goodness every-bloody-where!

And he is just incapable of taking offence. When Kannamba thoughtlessly asks him if he has indeed stolen like those around accuse him (and we the audience are annoyed with her for asking Rangan such a question), Rangan says: என்ன அத்த நீயும் வரவர என்னை சந்தேகப்பட ஆரம்பிச்சுட்ட. The way he says it, it is abundantly clear he has not taken it to heart. Merely pointing out the silliness in her supposition.

And the cherry is of course his response to Kannamba when she asks him why he didn't come by the door. I can't recall a moment which matches this in stature in being simultaneously hilarious and poignant.

1971 அக்டோபர் 18, தீபாவளியன்று 'பாபு' படமும் 'நீரும் நெருப்பும்' படமும் ஒன்றாக வெளியாயின.

ரிக்ஷாக்காரன் அதற்கு 142 நாட்களுக்கு முன்பும் (மே 29), சவாலே சமாளி 107 நாட்களுக்கு முன்பும் வெளியாயின.

ஒன்றில் சைக்கிள் ரிக்ஷா இன்னொன்றில் கை ரிக்ஷா என்பதால், இரண்டும் ஒரே நாளில் வெளியானதாக சிலர் கூறுவதுண்டு. அது தவறான தகவல்.

கம்ப்யூட்டர் யுகத்தில் உலகம் எவ்வளவு சிறுத்து விட்டது பாருங்கள். நினைத்த மாத்திரத்தில் பார்க்க முடிகிறது. முன்பெல்லாம், எப்போது தியேட்டர்களில் போடுவார்கள் என்று ஏங்கிக்கிடந்த காலங்கள் கண்முன் தோன்றி மலைப்பை தருகின்றன. இருந்தாலும் அந்த அனுபவங்களும் சுவையானவையே.

பராசக்தி விழாவை அட்டகாசமாகக் கொண்டாடிவிட்டீர்கள். பாராட்டுக்கள்.
