மூவா? முதல்வா! இனியெம்மைச் சோரேலே
I was thinking over the GM’s version of “MaangkuyilE” when he sings it for Vinu Chakravarthy and was wondering what makes it so likeable. As we all know, GM regularly uses such songs – popular, not so popular / heard, unheard – and more often than not, the usage has been very effective. Not without reason, we have a separate compilation of songs used by GM, which was a wonderful initiation by Sridhar. We also had a discussion on the different pitches used by GM, initiated by PuLi.
Now, MaangkuyilE is not just another song. It was a massive hit. It was from a 90s movie which ran successfully for a year. And GM himself was a part of that success. The audience SHOULD and SHOULD NOT relate to the original. These were the challenges in using this song.
The expected effects in using the song are:
1. The singing of GM should not spoil the soul of the song.
2. At the same time it has to evoke a comical feeling. After all GM is not the hero
3. Well again it should not be entirely comical as well, because GM is an aspiring singer, who is not shown as a trained singer.
Let’s cut to the scene. GM enters the cell, where Vinu Chakravarthy, a life sentenced prisoner is in. He knows GM sings well and asks him to sing a song. Like any confidence personified aspiring singer, GM grabs the opportunity, irrespective of the quality of the audience or the stage.
As I said, GM was not shown as a trained singer. Now this could be seen as a handicap in such a challenging scenario. But that’s the stumbling block GM works on and converts that into a stepping stone. He works on that liberty to bring a bit of a rustic feeling to the song and gets into his own scale. The first line perfectly fits into his scale and comes out well. The second one too almost fits in, but may need a very slight modification to the lyrics. This is where the lyricist in him makes this minute change while the singer is still singing and forces him to sing as “naaLum endha naaLu”. (The usage of “im” here is deliberate, because it goes off when he sets of the same song in a faster pace in another scene). This small modification fitting into the scale along with his body language forms a major reason to elevate this presentation. And proves to us yet another time what a genius he is.
Now adding “im” is not a casual modification. Check this:
Today we are witnessing a monstrous, artificial popularity for songs – purely based on their entertainment and comical elements, not on their musical credibility. Even those who support these songs vehemently, have acknowledged that these are supposed to fade over time. But GMs performance which was only meant to be comical, stands till date.
