I got mouth ulcers from my mother's genes and for the past 20 years or so, I get them once in every 2 months and they last for 10 days. I have seen more than 15 doctors, both in India and in the states and the unanimous opinion of *well-informed* doctors is - there is no single root cause and there is no treatment. *Possible* causes, just listing the most important ones which is not already mentioned in this thread:
1. Stress (YES!!)
2. Sleeplessness
3. Spicy food.
4. Not smoking, but smoking cessation.
Remedies:
1. Multivitamin tablets (not just B12) like Centrum (you have to take it 1 a day, no matter what. I am taking it)
2. The mexican coconut water cans you get in grocery stores(Works for me)
3. Eat light in the night, sleep well for a couple of days.

Thanks Nerd. My guess was correct. Whenever I eat spicy food against my body accepting limit, I see they appears in my mouth next day! I am carrying nowadays one Vita Coco packet in office bag. "Eat light in the night" - this is somewhat I could not follow always!
