That is nice ! Followed by Verasa Pogayile.... The Last Time I enjoyed a Intro Number from Vijay was Vettaikaran... Both Visuals & Audio were perfect. His Son's cameo plus the dance moves were a perfect start to the film. Kutti Puli wasn't likable on hearing but the visuals were a treat and now I'm addicted to that song nearly 1 Yr after the film had released. Tamizh Pasanga was likable on hearing but visuals were a letdown except for few dance movements.

Pattu Onnu is no match to most of his Super Starters IMO. Hoping it'll end up like Kutti Puli

Out of curiosity heard the full songs of Jilla. CD buying soon, well, once available here. But the crappy mp3 are ruling the net. It sounds like its been recorded at someone's basement. For a while now I have been insisting to hear music on original CD to get the maximum. I am sure on CD and a decent sound system the songs will sound much more interesting.

Heard the songs a couple of times, think need more time to talk about it in detail. D Imman, a promising MD he is, cannot avoid comming under the radar. He just cannot escape like few other upcoming (sometimes established) MDs out there.

First thing first - as VinodKumar had mentioned, Mama treat song towards the end would shake the cinema hall. Watching out for this sequence.

The theme - I liked the whole concept and the fussion setup, but somewhere in the middle it lost me - is it because it was a bit long by dragging the same sound, I don't know. Or maybe its the crappy audio quality. Anyway a theme is not going to be an entire piece in the movie. It may work wonders in bits - if you cut it into 3 pieces you have - 1 for Vijay, 2 for Mohanlal and 3rd for both. That's how I look at the sound variations incorporated in the theme.

Verasa Pogayile is quite lathargic (for the moment - add in the cloudy whether here too. Should pick it up again on a brighter day). Didn't give much attention, but feel that it will emerge as a winner merely due to its tempo and ancient style melody.

Last but not least (this could be a hard one) : Vijay could have steped down from singing Kandaangi. The female voice just beats him to the ground & the whole harmony is missing between the singers. Hope from several listening Vijay can convience me. And of coarse I accept that Vijay is a super-singer for his fans, but just step out of the circle and listen to this song. Hey, but who cares, "just-sit-back-and-enjoy" is the dish of the day !

Jilla album will soon shoot up in the favorite list among Vijay fans and music lovers alike.

I agree mappi. The theme started off well but lost me in the middle but it's a theme. I enjoyed Verasa Pogayile mainly because of its throwback to the melody era. Would sound much better with a good quality. When I first heard the teaser song for Kandaangi I also had the same impression but he won me over with repeated listens. Hope you will enjoy it as well on CD quality.

Vijay’s opening song in Jilla is a mid-tempo mash up between hard rock and Kerala chendas. The song has its moments of punch but it’s not from its pace. When compared to some of Vijay’s popular opening numbers this one is less racy but as grandiose as anything we’ve heard in this category. SPB and Shankar Mahadevan have done their share of opening songs over the years and they bring out the best from Imman’s melody. The composer throws in interesting instrumental fills throughout the tune and scores with his instrumentation.

Imman feels more at home in this melody as he’s built his fan following through such tender compositions. The main melody is sublime and the backing vocal arrangements are very well orchestrated along with precise instrumental performances. Imman offers the best of both worlds – a top class melody and excellent instrumentation.

Imman’s trusty percussions turn up for the party next for a peppy tune that features very excitable performances from the singers, especially Sunidhi Chauhan. Imman leaves some feathery guitar touches amidst the flurry of beats. The melody is pretty straightforward and the song simply sticks to its guns throughout.

It seems that every song that Vijay touches turns to gold, so is the case here. Full credit to Imman for shaking things up and getting Vijay to try out a melodious duet, and the composer reserves one of his best tunes for the star. For Shreya Ghoshal it’s a just another day in the office but its Vijay’s sensitive performance which stands out as the highlight. Imman’s string section is out in full force here as they back up the tune superbly and the unique pipe sound here is extremely attractive.
Yeppa Maama Treatu
Singers: A.V Pooja, D. Imman, Snigdha Chandra
Lyrics: Viveka
A fast paced song that’s clearly been created to play to Vijay’s strengths as a dancer. As far as quality of the melody is concerned, the other songs on this album score higher. Lyrically too the track aims to play to the gallery but some of it comes off as rather trivial. But the song chugs on uncompromisingly with a continuous rush of beats.

Singers: Anand, Deepak, Santhosh Hariharan, Shenbagaraj
Lyrics: Viveka
The theme is power packed for sure with the heavy guitars and the chorus chants but there isn’t a single guitar riff or a vocal melody that stands out as exciting. The use of the chendas could carry some co-relation to the opening song.

The song starts with Malayalam's traditional drums - Chandi melam which itself gives the pulsating feel and when the powerful bold vocals of SP Balaumaramaniem and Shanakar Mahadevan reaches our ears one can feel a perfect mass and class feel. Yugabharathi's lyrics clearly conveys the character of Shiva and Shakthi, especially the line "Uyir endru unnai naanum oru naalum Sollamaten, uyir endral endro oru naal pirivayey. Eppothum unnai nanum vida maten thothu poga jeipomey intha pooviyin melai"clearly depicts Shiva and Shakthi's relationship. A perfect mass intro number for Ilaiyathalapathy and Laletan.

A fast peed item number which starts with some heavy folk beats and apt vocals of Sundihi Chauchan and Ranjith have added more energy to the songs. Especially whenever Sunidhi reaches 'Amanga' it is catchy and the energetic chorus gives the perfect party feel. Vivekha's lyrics adds all kind of adult only theme which is sure to work with youngsters. The end portions in the song are sure to rock in theaters and it gives more opportunity for some high octane dance steps.

A heavenly melody at any day, especially when you have to soulful voices like Vijay and Shreya Ghoshal which sing to the novel lyrics of Vairmauthu with ear pleasing instruments at the background one can easily sense a hit song. A typical Imman melody which gives more importance to vocals at initial portions and then comes the rich orchestrations wherever needed. The song must be a montage song with hero praising heroines beauty with some goof lyrics from Parvathy. The song also gives as a 80's and 90's Ilaiyaraaja music which are known rich orchestrations. Another good melody from Imman
Eppo mama treat ; Singers :Imman,Av Pooja,Snigdha Chandra
A club number with right kind of mixing and trendy instruments. Though Vivekha's lyrics appears to be ordinary Imman's tune and apt vocals of Pooja does the justice. Also one might get the feel of 'Oppa Gangnam' style at some places, when Snigha Chandra's trendy voice arrives the song gets the much needed fast kuthu beats which is again to have some superb steps from Ilaiayathalapathy.
Jilla Theme
A mass theme with all kind of heavy techno beats which is sure to enthrall Ilaiyathalapathy fans. The theme basically tells the powerful side of Shiva and Shakthi, Imman has given the trendy instruments for Vijay's character and after some time he has used the 'Chandi Melam' for Mohanlal's characterization which elevates the theme as a whole. A perfect theme for a mass film and the end note gives high cheer feel, a sure shot winning theme from Imman.

Sunidhi Chauhan sounds perfect and coheres to the percussions and instrumentals very well. Although, Ranjith does his best, her intonating style overshadows his portions. The song slightly reminds us of Imman’s folk number in ‘Manam Kothi Paravai’.

Here comes the cherry-pick of this album. After a very-very long time, Vijay comes back with a melodious treat. The slow-paced folk track with violins in the backdrops is so enchanting. Shreya Ghoshal is so pleasant with her voice and we’re song will be one of the best melodies in 2014.
Yeppa Maama Treatu
Singers: D. Imman, A.V Pooja, Snigdha Chandra

Let the party begin. This is a dub-step treat for the Ilayathalapathy fans. The singers - D. Imman, A.V Pooja and Snigdha Chandra set your foot get-go for an impeccable party. There is nothing to appreciate about the lyrics, but they will easily get into the senses of listeners. The song sounds little similar to ‘Vaada Vaada Paiya’ from Katcheri Arrambam.

NESAN INTERVIEW IN BEHINDWOODS.

Are you nervous ahead of the release of Jilla?
I am definitely nervous naturally, but everyone is happy with the product. We have seen the film without RR and felt satisfied. It is a fast film and is fully packed, with little comedy elements.

What do you have to say about the various Jilla plot lines that are going around?
The expectations surrounding the movie are huge and I have already read about 20 different versions of the story, thanks to the buzz and people’s curiosity around the film. Don’t think and confuse too much. It is a simple enjoyable movie and I’ll advise the audience to come to the theater with a blank frame of mind. You will see scope for Vijay to showcase his acting skills too and it is an agreeable mass movie on the whole.

Will Jilla meet the benchmark set by previous Vijay hits ?
People have to like the movie and that’s about it. I am not worried about benchmarks set by previous Vijay blockbusters. I’ve gotten this opportunity after 15 years and so I have definitely tried to make it special.

Where all did you shoot Jilla? And also talk us through the Japan experience when Vijay reportedly arranged the necessary permission
The filming part of Jilla is over and we have totally shot for 150 days in places such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Madurai and Japan.
In Japan I wanted to shoot at the famous Akashi Kaikyō suspension bridge and also at another place where the old world Japanese charm is intact till date, with all the traditional antics and props. Such a spot can’t be found anywhere else in Japan.
In Japan, we have to get proper permission from the concerned Japanese authorities 10 days in advance. They are very strict and professional but if proper clearance is obtained, we can shoot for free. But we had only 6 days’ time to arrange and they were adamant in not giving us the go-ahead. I was also adamant with my team that I would not shoot the song unless these two locations were part of the plan. I told Vijay Sir about this and all he needed was 30 minutes to arrange all the necessary permissions and we were able to shoot without any glitches.

How has the pre-release theatrical business of Jilla been?
The complete theatrical business of Jilla was done within a day. We didn’t release any stills in the beginning and then I thought of releasing a still with Vijay donning a garland with money flying all over. It proved to be very apt and the film’s business was wrapped up in double quick time. The speed of the business is probably because of the big combo associated with Jilla. The film is a table profit from top to bottom for the producers and we are hoping that theatres and distributors also make good money.

As a young director, how did you handle such big stars on the set?
I gave the story narration of Jilla way back in 2010. Vijay got convinced and came on board to make my film big. Then R.B.Choudary decided to produce the film and it also happened to be Super Good Films’ 85th film. The film got bigger. When we were deliberating about the choice for the father character, Lal Sir came on board and the project became truly huge. I have been admiring him since my film school days.
But I didn’t have any issues in handling and managing such big names. The great vibes between Vijay and Lal Sir made sure that I was able to manage everything fine.

Did Vijay and Mohanlal make any script level suggestions or corrections?
I have made Jilla exactly in line with the script which was narrated to Vijay Sir way back in 2010. Scene developments have been done but Vijay never interferes once he is convinced with the script.
In the beginning, Lal Sir asked me casually how he wanted me to act. He even asked me to enact the scenes so that he can observe and do like that. He is such a jovial man and when he performed his scenes, he gave it a totally different dimension. He has such experience!
I have gone for so many retakes with Lal Sir. In Kerala, it’s just mostly one take for him but I kept going for 5 takes on a regular basis. Beyond a point, Lal Sir joked in the set and said “see this guy is going to demand more takes now”. His contribution and co-operation towards the project is great. Even during dubbing, he was ready to accept my suggestions and corrections and co-operated totally.

Has Mohanlal dubbed in his own voice? And how is Kajal coping up with Tamil?
Lal Sir has dubbed in his own voice as only he can bring about that impact with his voice, pauses and diction.
Meanwhile Kajal doesn’t have much problem in picking up the lines. We gave all the lines in Hindi and she delivered pretty fast.

Why do you think Vijay and Mohanlal are such big stars, now that you have observed them from close quarters for long?
Vijay is so dedicated. 45 minutes before the shoot begins, you can see his car on the sets. The same with Lal Sir. The two of them are such experts at punctuality and dedication. Another thing with both of them is that they’ll not move an inch after the shot is done. Generally actors rush towards the monitor after a shot is done to observe their performance. But the two of them will just stand at the same spot while I would keep looking at the monitor so that if a retake is needed, they’ll immediately be ready. They are truly unique and no wonder they are huge.

“Imman - the mix of Rahman Sir and Raja Sir”
Imman took special care for Jilla. I made my expectations clear to him that after Kumki, I need another full album hit from him. He is a workaholic and his numbers for Jilla are like slow poison and will grow on you. There are good melodies and fast peppy numbers. He is in full form and his work has exceeded my expectations. He is very easy to work with and I took full liberty to even call him at odd hours and make my suggestions to add to his confusion (laughs). He is a mix of Rahman Sir and Raja Sir and there was a very good wavelength match between me and Imman.

“Vijay the professional singer”


Vijay has sung a lot of peppy numbers in the past and when we dragged him and told him that he would be singing a melody this time he wondered what ??? But he sang so casually and beautifully. The recording took place at A.R.Rahman’s studio and Vijay did full justice to the number like a professional singer.

The other pillars of Jilla
98% of the work on Jilla was done by DOP Ganesh with just clash work done by Priyan Sir. During clash work, we just do some additional shots and all the main portions were supervised by me as I felt that the proper ‘feel’ should be there. I used to juggle my time and schedules during such clash work and would travel at short notice.
Stunt master Silva master was of great help in setting up my Telugu film before I began work on Jilla. He is a good friend and I can extract work easily from him. He did his best and the Phantom Flex camera that we used, added something extra to the stunts, compared to the stunts in other Vijay films. There are 5 fights totally in Jilla, including some small stunts.

Super Good Films must have made it truly grand right?
When Super Good Films decided to produce Jilla, Choudary Sir told me that we have to better Thirupachi’s level, as that was the previous Vijay film that he produced. He was ready to spend anything and arrange all types of cameras such as Phantom Flex and helicam just for the sake of grandeur and technical finesse. Jilla will be the next level for Super Good Films too.

What have you learnt from the directors that you have assisted?
Jayam Raja was one year junior to me at the Film Institute. I worked with him as a second unit director in Velayudham. I worked on some portions and also the song which was shot in Kashmir.
Editor Mohan Sir is so dedicated and he has complete love for cinema. His script discussion sessions used to happen at odd hours but he never lost his enthusiasm. Raja and Mohan Sir are so passionate about cinema. I also wokred with Bhagyaraj Sir on screenplay. He doesn’t speak anything other than cinema and I used to return home at 4 am in the morning when my dad used to go out for walking.

All that passion and love for cinema that I have observed have helped me a lot in Jilla.

The Veeram team is also getting ready to race alongside you. How does it feel?
Director Siva was a major factor in me getting my first Telugu film offer before I got the offer to do Jilla. But Vijay sir asked me to do Jilla fIrst and then do the Telugu film. Siva was 2 years my junior at film school and I’ll be very happy if Veeram succeeds.

Once, both our teams happened to travel by the same flight and Ajith Sir met me in the flight and was so friendly and cordial. Even at the airport after the flight landed, he put his arms around my shoulder and chatted away merrily.

All these fan wars are only in Twitter and the internet space. In real life we are all very warm and gentle towards each other.

Speaking of which, I am not into social media and just my close friends are in my Facebook space. I can’t keep updating to followers about what I eat and what I drink daily (laughs). And if a film turns out to be boring, just 10 mins is enough for the audience to decide. Thanks to Twitter and FB, they spread the word as fast as they can. Nothing can save the film then.

What next?
I have no plans yet about my next film and am just eagerly waiting for the audience’s verdict on Jilla. Once the film’s censoring is done, we will announce the final date. The film will most probably hit the screens on 10th and we have already booked a lot of theaters.

Rather unsurprisingly, Vijay himself attended the audio launch, unlike Ajith, who shys away from fanfare and public appearances. Veeram’s audio was launched on a FM station and is available in music stores, while Jilla’s music will be available from Saturday, as originally scheduled.

Explaining the need to donate money to struggling producers who once provided him a foothold into Kollywood, Vijay said, “Everybody puts only effort into films but a producer put money into it. From the puja to when the returns come in, hundreds of people need to be paid and fed, by producers. When I heard that they have financial troubles, people who launched me in my beginning stages, I wanted to do something for them. Jilla - Audio Review
Jilla is the Pongal Treat of 2014 from Vijay for his fans. Expectations are high on this film as it is expected to join the string of hits Vijay has been churning out ever since Kavalan. Starring Mohanlal in a pivotal role and Kajal Aggarwal paired opposite Vijay for a second time since Thuppakki, the film has music by D.Imman. The music director, a favorite with music lovers with his long list of hits recently has definitely work hard to give an album to satisfy everyone. Without compromising on his trademarks and at the same time keeping in mind Vijay's mass following, he has given a high energy album seasoned with melodies. A brief review of the individual songs follows.
Paatu Onnu Kattu
The album starts literally with a bang of guitar and drums, then Chenda Melam joins in, giving the feel of being in a village festival. A different opening song for a Vijay film, that too a duet, Imman makes sure in giving all the required mass feel to it. SPB and Shankar Mahadevan put in through their voices, the expressions of an affectionate father towards his trustworthy son and a obedient son towards his respected father. A song with the flavour of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala, this is sure to attract the masses in the first listen itself. Simple and meaningful lyrics by Yugabarathy are catchy.
Verasa Pogayile
This romantic ballad sung by Imman himself has simple western orchestration where the violin and whistling interludes stand out. Beautifully written lyrics by Parvathy explaining the after effects of falling on love, are brought to life by Imman by his expressive singing. This is one of the best solos by the music director. Though a little better work could have been done on composing the harmony, on the whole the song emerges as a winner. It seems "Verasaa pogayile" means "when going swiftly" in Madurai slang. New word for the day!
Jingunamani
A folkish fast beat song with a slight touch of carnatic too here and there and with heavy percussions, this will set you swinging to the beat. Simple and colloquial lyrics makes it easier to sing along. Sunidhi Chauhan and Ranjith who have both sung many hit solo songs Vijay films earlier, come together for this high energy number. The Veena interlude, a favorite in Imman songs is there here too. It is sad that the song is short with only one charanam. Nevertheless, short duration, high impact cracker of a song. Aamaango!
Kandaangi Kandaangi
The Chinese violin that plays at the very beginning of this song, takes you to a different world altogether. As if that was not enough, Vijay and Shreya Ghosal with their "Kanjaa vecha Kuralu" export you to another level of eternal bliss. A very very scintillating melody that requires a thorough professional to execute it, has been handled in the best possible way by the lead singers. No one would have expected this level of excellence from Vijay, though we all know he is a brilliant singer. The kick in Vijay's voice with the nasha in Sherya's voice makes this a perfect folk cocktail. The parts in harmony are awesomely done by both singers and same holds good for the finale also. Imman makes best arrangement of this song with lot of string instruments especially the chinese violin and mild percussion. Vairamuthu's lyrics after a long time in Vijay film is an added icing on this cake.
Yeppa Maama Treat
Super singer fame A.V.Pooja enters a new genre of her career in film singing with this kuthu number. Imman also has a diametrically opposite avatar in this song compared to Verasa Pogayile song. The changeover from western to folk and from fast to faster beats towards the end is done casually and neatly. With English rap and folkish lyrics, this is a perfect party song. It will rock the theatres with the visuals and Vijay's dance.
Jilla Theme
A perfect ending to the high energy album with backing vocals from Super Singer contestants, this theme rocks all through and will definitely be a treat to watch on screen with scenes. Lyrics portraying the characteristics of Jilla aka Ilayathalapathy Vijay written by Viveka are excellent. Here too, the transition from western to country side has been done neatly. The Chenda Melam towards the end and that particular arrangement transports us to God's own country for a moment, only to return back to the first song of the album once again.

Signature musical pieces by Imman are always outstanding and the one here in violins is no exception to the rule.

Vijay, Mohanlal starrer Jilla is currently progressing with its re-recording and other post-productionworks. The latest we hear is the makers are planning to release the film in Auro11.1. Auro 11.1 is s a three layer sound technology which produced the better output than Auro 3D and Dolby Atmos. Recently this technology was introduced and recently released film Vidiyum Munn also features this technology. Vishwaroopam and Kochadaiiyaan are also said to be released with this technology. Jilla is currently scheduled for January 10th as a Pongal release!

Ajith as Vinayak Mahadevan and Vijay as Prithviraj


The prospect of Ajith and Vijay working together in the same movie, has been discussed by fans and industry personnel umpteen number of times. Venkat Prabhu is one such director who has in fact expressed an open interest to direct both the stars in the same movie and said he even has such a script ready.

In a recent interview, Venkat made a pleasantly starting revelation that Ilayathalapathy Vijay had once told him during a meeting that he would have happily played Arjun's role in Ajith's 50th film Mankatha as a friendly gesture towards Ajith's landmark moment. Now, just the thought of Vijay playing that role and locking horns with Ajith is electrifying. What if it had happened for real?

We just hope that Venkat Prabhu gets to fulfill his wish of directing these two superstars together in the same movie. Industry records would be shattered in one stroke, if that happens.

The buzz is that there was a confusion of sorts in the Jilla camp for a week on whose name should appear first on the title card of the film — Vijay or Mohanlal. Now, we learn that Vijay has put a full stop for the confusion by saying that Mohanlal should be credited first.
Says a source close to the unit, " The crew of Jilla had been thinking about the placement of names of Vijay and Mohanlal on the title card. First, Mohanlal called up the director and asked him to take Vijay's name first as Vijay is a bigger star in Tamil Nadu. However, Vijay requested the director to carry Mohanlal's name first, reasoning that with 35 years of experience in the film industry, the veteran's name should naturally be placed first."

Jilla is a mass entertainer, It will have everything in it to entertain the masses. 995 out of 1000 who watch the film will like the film. Many have been asking me why did I decide to do the film. You will get your answers in January when the film hit the screens. I have got a strong & important role in the film, there is no Shiva without Shakthi and vice-versa, as the intro song says their strength is in togetherness. Nesan has taken special care to cater the film to the audience of both states. It is very difficult to attain such a balance, but I think it has come out well. Hope people will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it and become a huge success.
