Vk murthy. Good one p-r.

Excellent name for thread and a very good poll.
As of now, I think nri subjects have dwindled, item songs are not that much of a problem, and even the geometriv love storied are getting to dev-d proporrtions.
The problem really is the south bombay sensibility over-reaching - whether in the protagonist light in the bakeup sits or antagonist light in pandhalkaaran's movies.

But, as I said earlier, Ajith donning Mohanlal’s role itself is reason enough to diss this.
Indeed! How much ever the director is serious about the remake, the casting is worse enough to nullify it all.

i have watched both the versions of kreedam and chandramukhi-manichitrathazhu - i would assure you, Ajith did more justice to the remake role than rajinikanth himself.....most here, probably dont realise Ajith is the most subtle of the current gen "screaming" actors........in a film like kreedam that helped a lot....

[tscii:94dd7b356b]Ishqiya is hugely enjoyable
It all began with Omkara the city audience’s love for small-town India. Then came others like Dev D, Gulaal, and now Ishqiya; and the love affair has reached the next level.

Ours is a country divided into two the city and small-town/rural. The rural is usually portrayed to suffer poverty and issues that the multiplex movie watchers can’t identify with. Then comes the small-town full of delicious quirks and nuances, and its dangerous underbelly. So we travel to Gorakhpur in Easter UP, where Krishna (Vidya Balan) is mourning the death of her husband who was with the `sena’, a grassroots movement. This sena is full of dangerous men who encourage children to pick up weapons and are constantly on the run. Just before his death, Krishna was convincing her husband Verma to surrender. “I can’t take it anymore,” she cries talking about his constant absence. That’s when she leaves the room and a blast takes away Verma’s life.

Meanwhile two small-time crooks are digging the ground on their enraged boss’s instructions; the boss is planning to bury them there. Babban (Arshad Warsi) the younger, swaggering one thinks up a quick plan. His uncle (Naseeruddin Shah) follows the hint and they’re free, with a bagful of cash. Hunting for a place to take refuge, they land up at Verma’s home. Krishna looks after them and Khalujan, as Naseeruddin’s character is called, finds himself drawn to her. Meanwhile Krishna is leading Babban on, while pining for Verma. Then on, this delicious quadrangle love story takes the more sinister form of a kidnapping, even as you see a glimpse of the small-town rich and their lavish lifestyles.

Small-town India is at its rustic best here: you notice with delight the details with a faded Lux soap-advertising calendar on the peeling wall, to the authentic styling. As in Omkara, the local swear words bring out the most laughs in the screen it’s inexplicably delightful to the urban viewer. Dialogue by producer, co-writer and composer Vishal Bhardwaj is simple and real, with occasional gems like “is duniya sab se gehri dushmani miya-biwi ke beech hai” (the deepest enmity in the world is that between a husband and a wife). The music, like Vishal Bharadwaj’s other works, stays with you even after the end credits roll. Gulzar’s lyrics form the perfect accompaniment to Bharadwaj’s tunes. Background score is the best one has heard in a long time.

Complementing the layered characterisation are the performances. Vidya Balan’s straight-faced cunning makes her character unpredictable and immersing. And one wonders which other female actor would agree on a role requiring her to wear drab sarees for the entire length of the film. Arshad Warsi, best known for his Circuit act in Munnabhai, will now hopefully be better known for his Babban. Kohl-eyed, aggressive, foolish, quick; this character is a wonderful one, and Warsi adeptly brings out the role’s varied colours. Naseeruddin Shah is a surprise, wonderfully exposing the vulnerability and foolhardiness of the seasoned criminal who believes that perhaps, he really can get that lovely, young woman to fall for him.

Each character is complex and their intentions are usually far from honourable. But it is the writers’ (Vishal Bhardwaj, Sabrina Dhawan, Abhishek Chaubhey) skill that gets us to like each of these quirky people and care for them. After assisting writer-director-composer Vishal Bhardwaj, Chaubhey debuts with a film that’s his own even it contains influences of Bhardwaj’s work and those of noir veteran Quentin Tarantino.

Chaubhey insinuates humour in the darkest of scenes: you guffaw as a man cheats on his wife with the local beauty parlour lady who whips him, or when one of our characters is going to be dug alive and insists on telling a joke. Despite the pace that slackens here and there, Chaubhey’s storytelling is sharp, confident and hugely enjoyable. A delicious tragicomic love story; you must sample this.

Rating: Three and a half stars

The lady, however, steals the show. Vidya Balan seems to be on a roll. After Paa, she once again rises to the occasion to reaffirm her credentials as a powerhouse performer. Along the lines of Hema Malini [ Images ], Vidya is a rare combination of grit and grace even when swearing in the strongest possible language draped in dowdy, fluorescent yellows and reds. If this is not remarkable, what is?

Although one of the best moments of Ishqiya comes during the climax as three maverick Ishqians walk away from a scene of destruction to Bharadwaj's escalating score, an unmistakable ode to the genius of Ennio Morricone

If VB is the equivalent of Quentin Tarantino in Hindi cinema, safe to say with Chaubey, we have a Robert Rodriguez in the making. :D :D

Following up on Maddy's recommendation:

Aamir: Good. A very simple film with no hiccups. Entirely believable. As Maddy said an in your face jihadi film. Very Good Tension builtup till the climax. Job well done.

Oye Lucky Lucky Oye: This one is a very different film. I have never seen stuff of this kind before or atleast I cannot remember anything right now. Wiki says this is based on a true story. As like the former film this is also well made. But why 3 Paresh Rawals in three different roles. I cannot Fathom. I for one thought that Abhay Deol should emote more.

Sallu goes "praa praaa" in LD n' Sanju "haraka baraka" in ATB. less said the better about S-E-L's music in a supposed-to-be-a-musical! Both avoidable by the proverbial mile!

Rock On - Very Good. Fine performances from everybody, Arjun Rampal and Farhan Akhtar in particular. Music being the theme of the film was done very well by S-E-L. The movie flowed seamlessly until the climax but that's the smallest glitch i thought. Very well done.

idhukku movie paakkaadhavanga ippdi nakkal panrathu paakkumbothu konjam badaa thonuthu...watch the movie n comment on it guys...for a change, i dont feel any of these above reviews r written to piggyback the star/maker this time...i can say that authentically aft watching this film which is a must-watch flick for any Indian movie lover...s it has his negatives with the usual KJO penchant of melodrama in the 2nd half, but if one luks at the overall message the film conveys n that too in a less preachy n entertaining manner, one has to appreciate it...so, watch n njoi!

Oru side 'very basic and silly' kostin:
Why couldn't SRK bid for Abdur Razzaq or any other Paki player?

He was answering (read "mazhuppal") this question to Barkha Dutt in NDTV. He said "Razzaq was injured and was unavailable. I don't think about the country of a player. Only merit" or something on this lines.

EDIT: Found the interview.

SRK: In that programme they said why didn't I buy a Pakistani player? Razzaq...he injured his wrist. At 12 O'clock I had to rush to town...I am not talking about Pak players as from Pakistan. I am talking about them as players. Even if I didn't choose them it was not based on the fact that they were from Pak but it was based on merit. My team has been losing. I can't take them on an emotional basis.

Barkha Dutt: So are you saying that out of all 12 Pak players you only found Razzaq wanting on the basis of merit?

SRK: See they are going to have some thoughts now on T20 and at the space we are lying in, I have to go by some thought. We thought it was a secret but six months back people knew that we are trying to buy him. I personally requested so many teams not to buy him because I really needed him but he broke his wrist. And what I reacted to Dr Roy that the first thing that you must realise is that there is an issue. Don't just jump up and say we are brave. There is an issue today if you try to take a Pak player in your team.

So are you saying that out of all 12 Pak players you only found Razzaq wanting on the basis of merit?

SRK mentions that he contemplated only Razzaq among the 12 Pakistani players. So, shouldn't the question be "out of all 12 players, you found only Razzaq to be meritorious?" :confused2:

I am no fan of SRK as I dont follow him but was totally irritated by the media to have given him so much hype for this film.. But after watching, I must say I am pretty impressed with his acting.. one of my friends said.. it could have been only SRK to have done this role as he has this uncanny knack of witty face/jokes coming out of his character.. I replied, "may be" . Kajol is still proving that she is the only one who can act in this current era ...

As everybody would agree, the movie should have been a 2 hr one .. Overall a good movie, not that great becoz of its length as usual for an KJ's movies. But it doesnt deserve the so called 4* 5* rating from our genius media reviewers

There is more to me. I hate it when people talk only about my sensuality. Yes, I use it to attract others but only for them to get to know me better. On dates I can talk and debate on almost anything. As a child, I played various games from table tennis, badminton to squash. I even represented Maharashtra for the 100 metres sprint. So when I meet men, I can talk to them about sport. Whether out on a date or serious, I am the 'impress me' type. For me, qualities like simplicity, humour, husband-material, etc, don't matter much. A simple gesture of sending medicine when I am not well is more welcome than trying to woo me with diamonds. I am single. I believe in marriage. I think it grounds one as a person. In that sense, I am old fashioned."

Sholay - watched again after a gap of few years (3 songs FFed - holi, horse cart & mehbooba) - classic!

Question for those who follow HF history - who was #1 in 1975 or prior to that, was it Dharam or AB? If AB was not, then he was simply too smart to bag that role (ofcourse, he did extremely well). Similarly Dharam was dumb to do the role he did.

If AB was already #1, the role choices make total sense :-)

Rajesh Khanna was the reigning #1, before Bachchan. Bachchan's first real big break as a solo star was Zanjeer. Deewar was possibly the ascending to throne unquestionably.
Dharam paaji was *never* a superstar. That is why you have Sunny Deol always moping that his father never got his due. It also seems like he was a happy go lucky guy, as reflected by his flitting across genres from the beginning of his caree. From light romances and heavy offmain stream to fooling around to middle of the road feel good to eventually he man in the 80s.

In that sense, it makes sense - his choice of role in sholay - I guess he might not even bothered to listen to the other role when offerred this one

Actually, the change from Khanna to Bachchan was tectonic. It was not just that he took over the mantle, but the whole film making ethos got changed from frothy romances and light feel-good to intense masala.

Rajesh Khanna used to be called "Phenomenon" for the hysteria he generated in fans - something that even the troika of superstars before him Dev/Dilip/Raj never generated. And then there was Bachchan who relgated Khanna to the "Phenomenon that was". The thing is the previous superstars continued to act/produce for a long time and retained some of their pull even when someone replaced them as #1 but Khanna just got obliterated by bachchan.

NOTE: Vinod Khanna was briefly seen as a threat to Bachchan but at his peak, he quit filmdom to settle in Rajneesh's ashram and lost his opportunity.

Plum,

I think it is not correct. Zanjeer preceded Sholay. If my memory serves me right, Zanjeer was late 1973 or early 74 film. And the fact that MGR starrer Sirithu Vaazha Vendum [remade from Zanjeer] got released on 30th Nov of 1974 lends credence to this. Sholay was released on the Independence day of 1975 with the tag of first 70 mm film of India.

My memory is Amithab and Jaya got married during Abhimaan some time in 1974. Definitely Abhishek and Swetha are 34 and 32 plus, right?

As for as Super stardom is concerned, you are right. Kaka was the reigning king. Starting from Aradhana in 1969, he held his throne till 1974. Even in 74, he had Roti, Ajanabi, Prem Nagar [murder of Vasantha Maligai but a great hit there] and Namak Haram.

Amithab who had a nominal presence in Anand came back strongly with the same Hrishidada's Namak Haram to signal the new era. 1975 saw Amithab spitting fire in Deewar, Roti Kapada aur Makkan and Sholay. Even an obscure film like Zameen (?) which also had Shammi kapoor literally benefitted from that trend. Even Chupke Chupke was released during that year, I think.

But one thing - the kind of fan following Rajesh had especially among young girls was phenomenal to say the least. He was so popular. I vividly remember two things. The height of his popularity saw some people starting anti rajesh khanna fans association.

Second thing is the only other person who was more popular was Indira Gandhi after the Bangaladesh war. So there was a question shot at Kushwant Singh who was doing the Q & A in Illustrated Weekly. It was like this.

Who would win if Indira and Rajesh Khanna fight each other in an election?

KSingh: Rajesh Khanna is not M.G.Ramachandran.

Murali, you are right(as usual). Zanjeer preceded Sholay.
My thinking was muddled by the fact that AFAIK( Bachchan wasnt the phenomenon that he was during Sholay, and my understanding/belief that Zanjeer made him an instant superstar)

But a quick google check shows Zanjeer was in 1973 (before I was born :-)).

No where in the league of Hirani's earlier Munnabhai ventures.

The second one was boring even in home viewing.Per se not bad but not the kind which I would recommend to someone.had very few good moments though I kind of like this Ranbir kid.Had watched him earlier in Bachna ae hasino and seems to be a natural though it's too early to judge his range.

A piece from Aruragh Ji:

It was 2001 and censor had refused certification for Paanch. I was angry and pissed off and I wanted to say a lot. On november 9th 2000 there was a new state of Uttaranchal and six days later on november 15th Jharkhand was formed. The 27th and 28th state. I was upset about everything, as to why these new states were being formed to why can’t i release my film to why do people fall in love to what is the point of anything. At that time my actor of Paanch, Pankaj Saraswat(now the creator of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge) introduced me to a part time model. His name was Raja Chaudhary. I never took him seriously. He had written a story on college politics, which was a nice story but nothing more and I told him so. I told him this story needs a milieu, where it is set and why is it happening. He did not know what to say. I asked him where is he from, and he said Jaipur. I said take me there. I was depressed, i needed to go away. We, him, me and Rahul mahariya, the co-writer of the story. d the in jaipur I met a lot of royalty, and heard there stories. They all had there own version of history but at the same time they had a grouse with the government. The grouse was common, based on history. That gave me a milieu for Raja’s story. I started writing. I researched, Aparna Malhotra, my researcher and assistant in Black Friday helped me. I read history from Sharda Dwivedi to Romila Thapar and others and found about how the republic of India was founded and the roles of the Rajputs in it. I read the Patiala report. A lot came to the surface for me and i rewrote and rewrote and Gulaal was born.

It was and is my most angry film. It was influenced a lot by the songs from Pyaasa. That is the music that i use to hear at that time. Particularly “yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai”. At the time I was writing the film, I had a visitor, Piyush Mishra. He was sitting in my office when i was writing the film. A music director came to meet me and started to p[lay his Nadeem Shravan kind of songs. I wanted to get rid of him, but Piyush borrowed his harmonium and started to play it and started to sing the songs he had written and composed for his various plays. Songs from “Suno Re Kissa” and “Jab Shahar Hamara Sota Hai” and various others. Those songs were provocative, inspiring and I realised that is the kind of music the film needs. I convinced him to stay back in Bombay, we bought him a harmonium and I asked him to do the music of Gulaal. The film changed again. This was before Black Friday, before he wrote “Bandey”.

Michael Arrakal, who use to work for USL was trying to produce the film. He couldn’t because Paanch had not released and i was labeled untouchable. We did a small schedule and after that the film was shelved. I got to do Black Friday after that. Jhamu Sughand was a partner in Black Friday. after the court stopped the release of that film I sank into further depression. At that time Jhamu read the script of Gulaal and based on the confidence he had on BF he said he wants to do Gulaal. We started preproduction, we started shooting and 20 days into shooting, new problems cropped up for Jhamu Sugandh. Gulaal was stopped midway along with Johnny Gaddar and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. the two other films of Jhamu. The former was picked up by Ad labs and the Latter by Aamir Khan. Nobody picked up Gulaal because it had nobody that was saleable. I made No Smoking, Return Of Hanuman and Dev.D. Now finally it was Zee Motion Pictures that bought the project and decided to complete and release it. Now finally we have finished shooting and we are hopeful. Now finally my dream project has completed shooting. It has taken seven years since i wrote it to find takers for it, and hopefully we will put it out in the theatres too with the same cast barring one, and the same way it was intended to. And I am ecstatic about it. [/tscii:74d2edc997]

I watched sholay last week and AB of that movie is easily comparable to Rajinikanth of late 70's (means the best "acting" phase of RK - iLamai oonjalAdukiRadhu etc kind).

It's easy to blanket / stereotype (same happens there too, I've often heard my college mates from north say "Kamal is clumsy") but the fact is "talends as well as mediocrities" are there in either place:-)

Wake up Sid. Not bad. Very very very predictable.

I think they don't write anything for the such lead female roles - "independent", l"evel-headed" etc., They just write "This role would be played Konkana". :) Wish to see her in a different role!

Ishqiya - Blade

இதை நான் எதிர் பார்க்க வில்லை.

It was very naive for something written by Vishal Bharadwaj.

The setting (Maoist ridden village area near Gorakhpur), crazy characters (Shah and Warsi's 'boss' is a off-the-chump don with a sandpapery voice, gun toting kid) seem things that Bharadwaj would do.

The premise of Vidya Balan being the fulcrum seductress didn't work for me. The 'need' for her to play these two men (which is not a twist, quite a forgone conclusion) is weak, these two fighting over her - just about everything regarding the 'plot' was weak. You never buy into the film, the characters seem cardboardy - albeit decorated caredboardy. The film alternated between a caper and serious. Climax ellAm height of blandness.

It had its moments

Vidya: aap dhonOn mein zameen aasmaan ka farq hai
NS: zameen aasmaan ka nahin, Hindu musalmaan ka farq hai :lol2:

One guy called Kuku is kidnapped whose signature call to his mistress would have been a cupped hand : cuckooooo
When his wife reaches the kidnappers' den she is accompanied by the girl whom she doesn't know is the mistress

Wife: cuckooooo
Mistress: cuckooooo
Wife moment of realization

Overall quite a disappointing for something from Vishal Bharadwaj.

Frabhu, I saw snatches of Ishqiya - the problem was it wasnt engaging at all. idhukkAga evanyA 12 maNikku mEla muzhichiruppAnnu thoongittaen.

There is one moment I carried forward when Shah faces his boss(?) who is going to eliminate him for some misdemanour(didnt catch that); he pleads with a woman whom the boss calls didi(?) to save him on the mobile, and gives the mobile to the boss; she is apparently all concerned when she speaks to shah, and seems like intent to save him (plays out very well) but when given the phone to boss, says coldly to the boss "ho sake to maaf kar dena; tumhara faisla"

Given that Kari, Piri and gangana are ruling the roost, I actually think Vidya will survive atleast 3 rounds of elimination before her turn comes to be quashed

First time it was interesting. Not funny or intriguing - interesting. Then she does it again in the end. :?

What you saw was the second time they are digging their grave, they do that 10 mins into the movie for the first time. pEchchu kuduthukittE Warsi labak-nu boss-ai pidippAru. :lol2:

Love Sex aur Dhokha (yaarum paakkalaiyaa)

Shocking, scary. Film of the year quite easily and certainly one of the films of the decade. The first story (which is very familiar to us) is extremely well executed. The climax especially. We have seen a different take on the climax scene with *everything shown* and in this we see vague images of parts of it and both of them have the same effect :shaking: Could have done away with the boring/unfunny DDLJ bits. All the three stories were well connected (ala tarantino/innaritu) and you should not let your attention wane for a second. I did not quite get the 3rd vignette but I will watch it again. Better than KKG/OLLO.
