Where has your conflict with multiplexes over the proposed DTH (direct -to-home) premiere of Vishwaroopam reached? We have booked theatres in the South, but a section there is still opposed to it. In Mumbai, PVR was supportive enough initially but suddenly, they backed out. Subsequently, I tried convincing them but they have not relented.
Is DTH just a way to play safe in a low satellite market? No. Let me tell you that unlike in Mumbai, satellite rights have risen in Tamil Nadu. I had my regular takers with substantial money but profits would have been meagre. DTH ensures greater profit. Some exhibitors claimed I am driven by greed but I prefer to call it 'opportunity'. Asked what I would do with the money, I said I would plough back in theatres. They are needlessly worried. Seeing a film in a theatre is a cultural habit in India, it will never go away.
How did Vishwaroopam shape up? PVP was supposed to produce Vishwaroopam but the canvas kept widening. They were kind enough to become the financers while I took over production. I got a cameraman who would work on digital cinema, an AD from the US, an art director from Vietnam, and stuntmen from Thailand and the US. It wasn't an easy film to make. We didn't shoot in Afghanistan since we were advised it would be unsafe. We thought of going to Kazakhstan but the people there were not film savvy. Eventually, we recreated Afghanistan in Chennai. Also, we dropped the idea of casting big stars like Sonakshi Sinha among others. We wanted the money to show in the film and not in its posters.
So you dropped her from the film? Everything was amicable. We explained it to her. Shatrughan is like an elder brother.
You did films like Saagar, Sadma, Sanam Teri Kasam... and then you left Mumbai... At the time of Saagar, I had done 109 films. Had I hung around here, I wouldn't have completed 215 till date.
Weren't you supposed to do a film with Barry Osborne? That will happen but after I complete Vishwaroopam 2. I've even completed ten days shooting for it. Osborne is also helping me premiere Vishwaroopam in Los Angeles.
Tell us about your daughters Shruti and Akshara. Shruti is travelling more than I ever did. She has become very busy. However, her Ek Duuje Ke Liye is yet to come. Akshara is learning how to dance. They stay with their mother (Sarika).
Are you in touch with Sarika and Vani? No. The parting wasn't smooth in either case. I was too much in love for an amicable settlement. I am sure it wasn't easy for my wives either. Marriage is not a film you can forget if it flops. I felt scarred.
Did you see the break-ups coming? I saw them coming. Sarika and I were married for 17 years. And I knew the marriage wouldn't last 12 years before we parted ways. Although we kept pulling on. I thought it would affect the children. I waited for them to come of age.
Both your marriages didn't succeed. Do you think you should've married at all? I never believed in marriage. People marry because of peer pressure but I don't subscribe to the 'herd mentality'. I shouldn't have married. I married for the convenience of my women. Vani wouldn't live-in and I wasn't strong enough to put my foot down. And the society was such that Sarika and I couldn't book a hotel room together even after we had two daughters.
Didn't Gouthami pressure you to marry her? Never. She is very different. She is a very progressive lady, and not just to please me.

It could be one great method actor saluting the other.
Dilip Kumar, was the original method actor at-least as far as Mainstream Bollywood cinema is concerned.

Dilip Saab’s attention to detail and the conscious effort he took to ‘get into’ a character…are legendary.
For example..it is said that he spent several weeks to actually learn and ride a Tonga, so that he did not need ‘Doops’ even for action scenes..
And it is also said that he had to take psychiatric consultation…and remained in depression for about 6 months after shooting for the ‘Devdas’.
Perhaps Kamal sees a lot of the great Sivaji Ganesan in Dilip Kumar…
Consider this… Dilip Saab came into the industry as a virtual unknown (without any godfather)
And soon became a trend setter of sorts, with his Urdu Aadab, great dialogue delivery and some fabulous acting.
His movies had some immortal music by the great team of ‘Naushad Ali, Mohd. Rafi & Shakeel Badayuni’. (Like Kannadasan, TMS and MSV for NT)
And Dilip Kumar was a major influence to great actors of his generation and the next…. See the similarity ?

IF there is one word to describe Padmashri Dr Kamal Haasan, it’s “virtuous”. The South Indian film industry may have labelled him Oscar Nayagan (Oscar king), but with more than 50 years of acting and directing experience behind him, Kamal feels no urgency to be awarded an Oscar as a mark of success.
He began his career as a child actor in Kalathur Kannamma when he was barely 4 years old. Directed by A. Bhimsingh, he won the President’s Gold Medal for his role.
From then on, Kamal has never failed to get the attention of both critics and fans. He may have won numerous awards and accolades but he said in a recent interview that “it is never about the award (at international award events). I make Indian films, so my standard is to conform to the Indian film industry — that is the benchmark for me”.
He was here for the Kuala Lumpur International Indian Music Festival (KLIMF) 2012 as guest of honour.
“I look for fame among my people, my peers,” he added.
To produce a good Indian film, Kamal said he tries to translate the ideas of his idol, Mahatma Gandhi, into his works. It is a task which, he said, goes with the current age.
“I am a Gandhi admirer and his ideas are simply perfect, as you can see in my movie Hey Ram,” said Kamal, adding that he believes in doing things his way rather than adhering to convention.
He is also averse to the idea of “Western acceptance”. “Gandhi denied Western acceptance and fought for independence his way. Similarly, the question of Vishwaroopam (Kamal’s latest film) appealing to Western or Hollywood tastes does not arise,” he said.
The movie is “a spy-cum-political thriller” where Kamal plays a kathak dancer with a secret past (scheduled for release in cinemas nationwide on Jan 11).
“The Indian cinema industry need not seek Western acceptance, but rather the audience’s. We can compete and take criticisms but not look for approval. In essence, Tamil cinemas, by being more ethnic, will automatically become more international. A country must be proud of its culture — be it story, art and cinema,” said Kamal, adding that in Vishwaroopam, the elements are international.
Kamal said the idea of him being just a director is remote as he had always wanted to act, even from young. “The cinema was one good way to get away from school,” he quipped.
For Kamal, it is also important to think out of the box. “It is a need. I am a very uncomfortable monkey in a box... I want to make changes to fit the different needs of my audience. You can’t eat the same food every day, can you? So, change is crucial,” he said.
Despite his “conservative” background, Kamal refused to conform to social expectations and eventually made box-office hits with films such as Hey Ram, Anbe Sivam Unnai Pol Oruvan, Virumandi and Thevar Magan.
He is perhaps best remembered for his roles in Aboorva Sagotharargal, 16 Vayathinile and Avvai Shanmugi.
Kamal also spoke up against the glamourising of alcohol and unnecessary cabaret-like song sequences in Indian films. “I am not keen on songs as a narrative tool — at least not all the time. Music is a part of life but you won’t be able to fully understand music if you do not first understand silence,” he said.
“I have always been a critic of meaningless singing and dancing and I try to impart this in my movies. Unnai Pol Oruvan is a fine example.”
Unnai Pol Oruvan, a story about a common citizen who embarks on a journey to eliminate terrorists in India, is devoid of singing and dancing.
On his role as father to daughters Shruti and Akshara (Shruti is a musician and actress while Akshara is undergoing training to become a professional ballroom dancer), Kamal said that he trusts them with their career choices and the way they plan their lives. “It has changed now that they are grown women... I have to be their friend and cannot really take my old position as a father seriously, or I will be the one who looks like a child,” he said.
Rising south Indian music director Yuvan Shankar Raja also gave a debut performance at KLIMF 2012, alongside a host of Kollywood stars. Yuvan’s father, music maestro Ilayaraja, was also present.

We at cinemalead have already informed you that AR Murugadoss and Vijay will be coming together for an exciting project in 2014 for Ayngaran. Now there is a buzz that Kamal is planning to rope in AR Murugadoss in place of KS Ravikumar for the much awaited Aascar Ravichandran project.
It is to be remembered that in a recent interview KS Ravikumar has said that he is not in regular touch with KamalHassan after Manmadhan Ambu debacle.
But what our sources say that is AR Murugadoss has already committed with Vijay's project and he might join Kamal only after the completion of Vijay's project. Currently AR Murugadoss is busy with the hindi remake of Thuppaki.
