Maybe a little bit of a digression here - Sigappu Rojakkal, Rosappu Ravikkaikari and a few others that era took a directional change in tamil movies. From a regular 'kudumba kadhai' with woman chastity taken for granted involving heroes like NT, MT, Gemini etc., above movies had women in extramarital relationships. KB sir also did AboorvaRaagangal which had much younger Kamal in love with an older married woman. Those themes were very new and was not seen before in tamil movies ..

bill4u - while many were not entirely comfortable with KB's deliberate take on dysfunctional human relationships, I agree with you that his era was a much cherished and welcomed one in terms of taking cinema away from big stars to scripts - Sreedhar did that to an extent, but faded out..also almost all of KB's finds did him proud...

MGR's films were - from a cinematic pov - a disaster in terms of creativity - poor NT ended becoming a lion eating curd rice (as Kamal affectionately quips several times)...

KB thus had a great influence on an entire generation of filmmakers for the good..

Venkki sir - NadigargaL meedhu vimarsanam illai .. Cinemavin padhai or directionai patri. Ore madhri kudumba kadhai illamal veru maadhri oru theme. KB sir, Bharathi Raja, Balu Mahendran ivargal pola directors have set a different path breaking trend that time which needs to be appreciated.

These directors were far too junior to direct big stars like NT or MGR in those kinds of themes. Rajini/Kamal were very much like KB's disciples. NT or MGR will not conform to that time modern directors. Although NT did do a few good roles with them like Thevar Magan with Kamal and Muthal Mariyaadhai with Bharathi Raja.

The scene , where Kamal tells his son that he has brain tumour was very well done, I mean the way Kamal explains while throwing the cricket ball between him and his son, and explain he has brain tumour was very well done.. Such scenes are only possible by Kamal !

Agreed that the Lingaa/Koch fiascos have created a domino effect for UV's steady release (and loss in no-show for Day 1), but I wonder why they [Thiru sisters] did not pay their financiers well ahead of release to avoid such problems during release time? Matha padangal ellam seri thaan kudukuranga [other producers], why target Kamal specifically?

Balachander told many times - He was hesitant to use established and busy actors of that time. Instead he created many new actors and directors. In fact that helped TFI in big time since he brought many new.. We got gems like KH & Nagesh.

Balu Mahendra & Maniratnam,- Their way of film making was different from the previous generation directors. Lesser use of dialogues and different way of film making - Balu Mahendra got actors like Kamal.

Mani Ratnam got his son Prabu instead of NT.

I have heard of ego spats between NT and KB (who even managed to work with Gemini G) - more knowledgeable ppl can elaborate…

NT wearing bell bottom pants with a waist belt almost half a feet wide, funny looking sunglasses, and a horrific wig - all of this during the late 70s. romancing around with Sri Devi, Ambika chechhi - it was a testimony to the patience levels of ppl around that time…K Balaji remakes had NT in most of them - NT playing the Amjad Khan role in 'viduthalai' remake of Qurbani - was an absolute low-point in his acting career - even hardcore NT fans were left embarrassed!

Mudhal Mariyadhai and Thevar Magan were true tributes to the talent of NT..

Padikkathavan in which NT plays the eldest brother of Rajini - did some justice, and later on K Bhagyaraj in Thaavani Kanavugal tried to infuse some more justice - but thats about it…

NT never had a film like 'Nayagan' and apparently even he lamented that fact to Kamal around that time along the lines of "Nayagan madhiri oru padam kathai engalukkellaam kittavey illai"….

I briefly mentioned Mani Ratnam but deleted it - but here it is, since you brought his name - MR had/has his limitations big time - he cannot venture out of the urban middle-class/upper middle-class mould, one liner filled dramas - every time he did that - with the exceptions of the unique 'Iruvar' or 'kannathil muthamittal' to some extent, most of his films have been montages of eye candy frames…….I don't think he had it in him to come up with anything to exploit NT's talent…unless you expected NT to do a 'raja rajah' dance with bell bottoms in Egmore railway station (ninaichaaley vayiru kalangudhu)

If there was someone who could have properly used NT, it was Mahendran, maybe Mysskin/Nassar of present days….

With due respect to the NT, I have seen many of his BW films (thanks to my parents), most of his 70's were indeed a mokkais, Me being "SPB" fan, used to love the song "kaalam Maaralam nam kadhal maaruma" , I have never seen the visual till around 8 years ago, I was horrified on seeing the visuals ..

KB padangalla enga sir hero romancing duets? KB could have easily gotten NT a super script - but they did have some kind of a spat - if am not mistaken there was also a Gemini Ganesan fan camp that did not like NT specifically!
