VV was a BB as well ... dont have the BW link but some details -

Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, made on a budget of INR240 million (US$4.0 million), collected totally INR500 million (US$8.4 million) worldwide. Behindwoods declared the film a "blockbuster". This was the first Tamil film to be released in 16 theatres in Chennai city alone and changed the trend of film release.

VV also is not a "typical" movie like what the other stars do.
Best of luck - dear Tamil Film Industry ! ! !

Yeah they finally earned little profit because the major portion of profits were allocated to settle Kaja's earlier dues. Kaja Mohideen was neck deep in debts even before the movie's release & he attempted suicide. Kamal, Gautham and Oscar had to convince him and hold a press meet.

Pasting the contents of the interview here:-

" It’s only because of Kaja’s — the earlier producer’s — overheads that it became a breakeven film, with a little bit of profit. Otherwise it’s a major money-spinner.” Gautham goes on to crunch the numbers (and you may need a stiff drink before reading what he has to say; I came out with my head reeling). “They sold the film at something like sixteen-five to seventeen, and nobody has lost money. So it’s definitely made about seventeen. Oscar Ravi released it in (Chennai) city-NSC, and he’s given us a 40 lakh profit. The film was sold in city-NSC alone for three-thirty. Now at the last minute, when it looked doubtful whether the film would release or not, Oscar Ravi asked us to buy the film from the current buyer, and we bought it back at four-thirty, which is one crore more than the market price. So the man who first bought it made a one-crore profit even without the film’s releasing. Now the film makes business of more than four-thirty, but actually the price is three-thirty. So it’s made around one-and-a-half crores profit in city-NSC alone. And maybe it’s not done as well in the smaller centres, but it’s made up for that in the main areas like Trichy.”

after a long time reading some 30 posts at a stretch in hub... some good arguments from both sides..

Ajith & Vijay films may collect lot of money in future.. but to become a super star or something of that sort i don't think it will happen..
superstar - a household name.. u like him or not.. a SS film telecasted in TV brings whole family to watch it together atleast for 30 mins.. i ask Ajith & Vijay fans.. how many of your family members watch your hero's films when it is telecasted in TV..
for Ajith & Vijay to reach that stage they have to deliver some consecutive quality hits.. without this, anyway, they will rise to highest possible level in industry.. everyone in TN will know at the time of their film release.. but only the fans will look forward to see it.. others will take their own time or won't see it

    in 80's, actors.... [disadvantages]
    - released films continuously without any big break.. if one fails it will affect the next one & the pressure builds for consecutive failures & eventually it leads to field out
    - limited theater release.. competition from their own films (multiple releases sometimes), competition from atleast 5 other actors
    - needs a longer run to breakeven & then to see profits.. so, the content has to be good enough for the long run

    at present.. [advantages]
    - sufficient gap between releases.. makes people to forget the actor's previous films (failures).. they comeback again
    - extensive promo in every media (online, FM, TV, print).. widest possible release.. has some kind of huge fan following.. get money from them even before the film content / quality is spread (advance booking for 1st 3 days in a wide release almost gets u majority of amount invested).. if somehow film clicks.. then its a jackpot.. else, same strategy for next film.. after 6 months
