As far MGR was concerned his 'moves' were very cleverly calculated ones and his 'movies' were tactfully manipulated ones with appropriate political 'punch' dialogues and 'self projecting' song lines. Having understood his limits and limitations in the arena of acting, he just decided to remain 'a showman on earth' like Rajkapoor and concentrated on his desi version of Robinhood formula creating a 'do gooder' image in the minds of common public for whom he could always project himself as a 'philanthropist' and never perform a 'negative' role even in films!! Hence he made use of each and every opportunity that came his way to solidify his 'image' and delivered only seasonal entertainers rather than any classical tear jerker! The downtrodden sector of our community got mesmarised by his screen image (to become eventually his 'vote bank') which he could maintain till his last film. The built-up image helped him carve his own niche on the political side and when opportunity knocked his door he made the right use of it, encashing his popularity to become a chief minister of state till his death. That way, in one sense, he proved to be a diplomatic 'chaanakya' (?!) or a practical 'Padikkaatha medhai' making his political rival in a continuous suffocation, whatever trials he could try to surface out!
As far NT was concerned, he always thought of presenting to this world a limitless variations in characterizations in his own unmatched fort of acting. He never tried to build 'castles in the air' as far acting was concerned. His devotion to his profession, his punctuality, unassumed philanthropy, inherent helping tendency to create and help more number of producers to come up or emerge .. a mission of NT with a vision that made him the ultimate demigod of acting and the dictionary of acting compared to any other actor of this world. While MGR was struggling hard over 10 years or more to climb up the success ladder to reach his destination and hall mark in Tamil Movie world with insignificant side roles, it was a unique international achievement for NT to have become the phenomenal Super Star overnight by the thunderous success of his maiden film Parasakthi (maintaining this cult status till his death)! He enjoyed the perils of acting to deliver all possible characters to this world rather than getting stamped just as a show man. Probably in the hallucination of Maareesan Mayamaan NT was misguided to try his hands with politics which ultimately resulted in a loss of his own savings only since he was not clever enough to 'horse ride' on others money. Politics was just a 'thaamarai ilaith thanner' for NT even as he was an ardent follower of Karmaveerar Kaamarajar! As far the kingdom of acting is concerned he was the singlemost emperor of acting, while no one could match his acting calibre. He could have delivered lot more gems of movies if he was not dragged into 'Politics' which warrants diplomatic skills and never favours 'Kallam kabadamatra manitha neyargal' like NT! Let us avoid unnecessary discussions of his 'political' events and continue to project his unparalleled contributions to classic cinema only. This is my humble personal opinion.
