A rice mill in Palakkad turns into MGR memorial

One of the first modern rice mills to come up in Kerala’s Palakkad district, Bhama Rice Mill of Vadavannur village, is being converted into a memorial for iconic Tamil politician and matinee idol M.G. Ramachandran, whose childhood home is located in the same village.

The memorial will also serve as a ‘village heritage centre’ and showcase the culture and agrarian traditions of Palakkad. It is being established by the local chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

“We have named the heritage centre MAGORA, an abridged version of Maruthoor Gopala Menon Ramachandran. Apart from showcasing Palakkad’s rich and varied rural life, the museum and cultural centre will exhibit photographs and films on the life and times of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister,” said Arun Narayanan, convener of INTACH’s local chapter.

Kerala’s Minister for Cultural Affairs, A.K. Balan, will inaugurate the centre on Saturday in the presence of the national director of INTACH, Major General (Retired) L.N. Gupta, and former Chennai Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy, who is currently involved in renovating MGR’s childhood home in the village.

The heritage centre, located close to Pudunagaram-Kollengode road, is expected to draw tourists interested in rural and agrarian life. Apart from the childhood home and the newly established memorial and heritage centre, the village also has a community hall named after MGR. Palakkad’s art tradition includes three forms of puppetry.

“MAGORA is a first-of-its-kind, village-centric, story-telling space that will help preserve Palakkad’s rich rural traditions and art forms. The centre aims to celebrate the village’s association with MGR through images and words. It will host creative performances, exhibitions, and conversations,” said Dr. K.S. Ragesh, co-convener, INTACH. The heritage centre will feature a photo museum on Palakkad’s cultural diversity, put together by photographer Hariharan Subrahmanyan.
